Former ND player Raki Nelson?

I start school on monday. Anyway, my teacher was the football coach of a former nd player named Raki Nelson. Do you guys remember that player?

I can't say I definately remember him... but the name rang a bell so I looked and found this...

I remember he was a pretty big name when he was recruited here but that's about it, I was still pretty young. Either way that's awesome!

In the rotation at WR when I was a student there in the late 90s. Decent ballplayer. Great name.
According to this (way down) he's in prison now on drug charges.

Didn't he have the catch on 3rd and a mile on the game winning drive in 97 against Hawaii? Solid receiver back then.

I was sitting in the ND family section at the '98 Southern Cal game. Next to me was a stunning young lady, Raki Nelson's girl friend. She was dismayed that he was getting little PT in the game and no action. She said to me, "He's not going to be happy after the game."

I replied. "That's about to change. Watch the left side about 10 yards downfield. It's his turn." Next play, "Catch by NELSON, Good for 10 yards!," the announcer exclaimed. After the hug she gave me, she asked how I had known that. "Two seasons of watching Bob Davie," I replied.

I neglected to mention seeing Davie screaming at Urban Meyer who immediately grabbed Raki by the shoulder pads and launched him onto the field right before that play.

The hug almost made up for ND's lack of offense (Jarious was "out with a knee").

She was stunning.

Mrs BGIF, who watched the game at home, remarked upon hearing the story, "Now if Raki had scored, you might have too. Dream on, darlin'."

I suspect Raki got a night of passionate consolation.

I talked with his coach over the past couple of weeks. He told me that Raki was kicked off the team in hs for being lazy. He was the best player he had ever coached. Tore his knee up at ND. He never met Lou Holtz when he recruited Raki. Met Urban Meyer. He is now in prison for drug charges.
