i have lost faith for the rest of this season and doubt i'll watch any more games. i will still be on IE b/c i enjoy the banter. we'll see who actually joins the ranks in february and go from there. after what i saw yesterday, i have no clue what to think about the future. to me, it doesn't seem that hard to line up and play quality football. other teams do it with no problem year in and year out, but ND just can't seem to grasp the concept. Kelly has a gigantic hill to climb here.

i watch other games around the country and see passion and i see defenses gang tackling their opponents. we just walk around looking defeated. is there anyone that can take over ND and instill an attitude? i will give kelly his chance but he's in a massive hole right now.

I just watched the post-game press conference with Kelly fielding the questions. He was "usual Brian Kelly" with all the professionalism we've seen all along. But he was obviously stressed---he knew he had to do this, but he'd have liked to just get back to ND and the office. Kelly is always more frank than 90% of coaches, but he's not going to do any dirty laundry airing either. But some things were pretty clear "between the lines".------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ a). he was extremely upset by the inability to gain "one foot" on the goal line. He said something about that multiple times. He included Dayne along with the O-line in his "disappointment";--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- b). He continued to try to praise Dayne's development "faintly" ["he does some very good things and then he does some not so good things---at inopportune times".---this is not an exact quote, but a gist of the remarks distillation] He particularly mentioned and then shut up about the double move and go, by TJ I think, and that Dayne should have done that properly. He shortly spontaneously mentioned how well Tommy Rees did, thinking that even the one incomplete pass was not his doing, but the receiver's foot blundering. Read into that what we will.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- c). he was right up next to blowing as he addressed the inability of the defense to properly scheme and adjust---he was getting Kelly-Red about how smart his D-coaches are, and barely under-the-surface boiling about the expected criticism of them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------d). the bottomline message was that all of them, coaches and players, are his family, and that don't tred on the family. He claimed that they are all slowly and productively putting the thing together but under the circumstances at game times, they have no margins for error.

I saw a group of players with class, playing as hard as they could, altough it was not even close to the fans expectations, and a staff that is evaluating and trying to make the adjustments to help ND reach the pinnacle again. I am a proud fan. I want to win all of our games. I want to see improvements. I do not want to sacrafice integrity for those accomplishments (like most SEC schools do IMO). Its not where you start that matters, its where you finish. I know what some are going to say, "yeah, we will finish near the bottom." Well, that shows pure unfiltered ignorance. This is not a one year fix. Will it be Coach Kelly that gets it fixed? I think so, but if not, there will be one that will. Why do I feel that way when it wasn't Davie, Ty, O'Leary (for an hour or so), or Weiss? Because I am a fan of ND! I believe in ND. I will not turn my back on them and talk negatively. I don't like whats going on, but I couldn't do any better on the field or in the office. I am willing to bet that none of you that are so full of negative crap could do any better as well. Just my opinions, and I am sure that what I have typed will be blasted and some witty comments will be made to make fun of what I have said. Thats fine. A true fan is going to be supportive no matter how bad a season might get. I am a huge fan and will always be one. I'm very disappointed with the way we played on Saturday.., and I don't know what to think at the moment, but I do know this.., we will be great again, just not this year. I for one had unrealistic expectations and I would have said we would have won 8-9 games this year. But that is because I am an optimist. I think we finish 6-6 unfortunately, because I don't think we can play at the level it will require to win against ?Utah or USC this year. I will remain optimistic and hope for the best next year.

For the faithful...Look we got our butts kicked in yesterday, the team came out flat, thinking they could walk over Navy and Navy walked all over them all day. This team is not as bad as this performance. They nearly and probably should have beat an undefeated top 5 team on the road in Michigan State. Hey get a win against Tulsa, Army and upset USC or Utah and I think we all would agree we had a good season. This team is not not as bad as they played yesterday. If so Michigan State must not even be a top 25 team and Navy must be the best team in the land by comparison.

There is some questions that need to be answered mainly the O-coordinator and D-coordinator..

Why not put Hughes in and pound the ball up the middle it was clearly the weak point for Navy. Why do they call a run play and when it gets stuffed just flat out abandon the run and chuck it all over the field. Why are they in the shotgun in their own endzone? The safe bet is to run the offset-I or I formation just to move the ball a couple yard out of the endzone..

The problems:

1. Our insanely slow defense. Our corners are painfully slow, our safeties are slow, our linebackers are slow. Everybody's slow. You can play moderately good speedless defense if you are well-coached and mentally sound (see Stanford), but these players are not mentally sound, which brings me to my next point...

2. The enormous amount of mental mistakes. The sheer amount of blown assignments is astounding.

3. No passion. Yesterday, the only emotion I saw from ANYONE was Ian Williams weeping on the sideline. You'd look at the rest of them and see nothing. Just blank stares. Dayne Crist throws a pick and shows no frustration. It's sickening.

4. No running game. "We're going to run the football," Kelly claimed at the beginning of the season. What the hell happened to that? You run your big play, quick scoring passing attack and don't expect things to go wrong against the best clock control team in college football? God. We haven't had a decent run game since the Darius Walker years.

5. Kelly's offense has to have perfect timing between the QB and WRs to be effective. Everybody has to be on the same page. If nobody is on the same page, it doesn't work. The timing between Dayne Crist and his wide receivers is awful. Thus the offense doesn't work.



This is NOT a Kelly team. This is a Weis team, through and through. Give Kelly five years to get speed on the field and see what he can do with it. This loss is a huge setback, but it's not lost, just yet.

Anyways, it was flat out hilarious reading NDOM's progression of posts yesterday. Actually helped internetically calm me down a bit. I literally busted out laughing when I saw him come out with the duck and the new name. Hope he brings back the NDOM. That's how we know him.

Riddickulous, I simply can't stress enough how much I dislike the running game in a spread offense. I also could not stand CW's running attack.

It is COMPLETELY about the scheme. Lesser teams can succeed based on a good scheme. Any doubters should quit doubting after watching yesterday's debacle. Navy's scheme allows for hidden blocks and hidden ball carriers. You can't tackle someone if you are on the ground, or if you can't find the ball.

For me its about time to say it like I see it, they are not a good football team. I usually am positive and very much in the corner of the Irish, but this is not good enough. Either join the MAC or bring in the players to get it done. That was an embarrassment to the tradition and excellance that was once here. If that game yesterday was not a wake up call for this program to do something about it in terms of getting players then the program should take a step down in level of competition. This was Navy not ALA,OKLA,AUBURN,OREGON,BOISE,TCU it was fine young men who defend our country but it was still Navy. They wont even move up in the polls because they beat a team that is just not very good. If you cant do better than that then step down as to who you are playing. I'd rather be a non factor playing MAC schools than sit thru that embarrassment. That effort was shocking in its failure across the board. I hear people talking about future national championships etc---are you kidding--- try to win 7 games first. Its about time a smell of reality hit the University of Notre Dame's football program. A few 4/5 star playmakers do not make a football team. Yeh and people are worried about when 'Game Day' is coming to South Bend. This dress rehersal of a college football team has got to change. Brian Kelly is a good coach but he cant block, tackle, think, and react, he's only a coach. Think about how people who travel to get a glimpse of Notre Dame football leaving the stadium with 15 minutes left in the game because your team is getting crushed by Navy and let that 'really' sink into your mind. Unbelievable.

This is a new coaching staff and new scheme. To not give that time to develop is over the line impatient. I know it's been decades of funk, but the reality is that this is all new and time has to be given. That is what has to happen every single time a new coach is hired. This was a bad game. It was a really bad game. But that's what it was, a bad game. Leave it at that and let the coaches etc. learn and grow from that. If they can't, then it's time to move on, but in Year One, what else can you do?

I wrote in a thread yesterday that something more than just lack of personnel is affecting ND. There is a serious stink of losing at ND and that may or may not be aided by the Admin, fans, media, etc. That's a mental deal that is rough to overcome. You need a serious kung fu champion to kick that out of the program. Give Kelly time to do that. It's more than X's and O's. It's a lifestyle deal. It's how you view your day and your tasks and your attitude. X's and O's are easy compared to that.

Also, did anyone else notice that stupid crazy schedule that BK has? That is just counterproductive if you ask me. You want someone to come in and win. Put him in a position to win. Don't load his schedule down with luncheons and meetings with money. I get that all that is part of the deal at ND, but maybe it's time to get some focus and shed the extra curricular BS.

You sunshine and flowers fans are just as bad as the doomsayers. Your point of view is not the only criteria for being an ND fan. People don't have to subscribe to your rainbow and bubble bull****. People are on an ND board, many for longer than any of you have been here, and you have no basis in reality for calling the people who choose to offer negative critiques fair weather fans. We haven't been really good since the 90s, so anyone on this board is a genuine ND fan. Our last three records are 3-9, 6-6, 6-6. That will really get the fair weather fans out of the woodwork won't it? Your posts of unending positivity saying you know everything will work out with BK are pure opinion just like your counterparts on the other side of the aisle. No one knows for sure what is going to happen during Kelly's tenure, but a loss to Navy is a red flag, and especially the way the team responds to it. Keep your bleeding hearts and approach our team from an analytical standpoint, you'll find plenty of problems and reasons to be worried. There is nothing wrong with clinging to hope that ND is going to be great again under Kelly, but you can't choose to ignore the facts, one of which is this was a terrible loss to a Navy team, worthy of criticism in all aspects of the program.
