Help me out here experts...

First, I am aware he really did fumble. The replay confirmed that he did. I am not questioning the fact.

But, if the ref calls incompleted pass and blows the whistle isn't the play dead. How could they overturn that one? Simiar to when a RB fumbles...if you call a fumble it can be reviewed to see if the knee was down, but if you call his knee down there is not a chance for a replay because the play has been blown dead.

In both cases isn't it better to rule the fumble initially and then go back to look at it. The opposing team then has the opportunity to pick the ball up and advance it. Am I incorrect?

i thought a new rule came out, not sure the exact name. But it's something like the Continuation Rule.

which is if some one fumbles and the play is called dead, if someone from the other team already picked it up, they will then review it and since the opposing team had control they are awarded the ball.

i think, it is something to that effect. sorry i don't have the rule book in front of me, some one else on here is probably alot more informed. just trying to help

I said the exact same thing at the time. How can they predict, after they blew the effing whistle, who would get the ball, considering one of our players might have stopped on the whistle? Now, it was obvious who was going to get the ball, but still, how can they predict that crap?

Well, it really would've been a bitch if the guy had picked up that ball and run with it...

d. Live ball ruled dead in possession of a ball carrier when the clear
recovery of a loose ball occurs in the immediate continuing action after
the loose ball.
1. If the ball is ruled dead and the replay official does not have
indisputable video evidence as to which team recovers, the dead-ball
ruling stands.
2. If the replay official rules that the ball was not dead, it belongs to
the recovering team at the spot of the recovery and any advance is
nullified.

this is the rule i found

Although even this rule wouldn't have helped us last night, it seems that it is the most fair way to call it. Certainly if it is clear who will recover (MSU in the play in question) it is fair for them to receive the ball. However, in case everyone stops, they can't advance it. I, like many here thought the ball should have been ours because whether it was live or on the replay you could here the whistle blow as the ball is hitting the ground.

At least I feel a little better that it wasn't one more place where the zebras took it to us. They did enough of that in the last few minutes of the game.

Regardless, Michael Floyd needs to protect the ball much better.

basically players need to play beyond the whistle, but since this is ND we will be called for late hits, stupid ncaa rule book, im pretty sure NFL says once whistle blows all bets are off

I dont care he fumbled twice yesterday. HOLD ONTO THE BALL, Turnovers have killed any momentum we could have had in all 3 games,

didn't this happen to Robby Parris last year...ref blew the whistle so he let up after he coughed it up, and the other team came in and picked it up?

My major complaint then and now is that the rule conflicts with the expectation for play to stop when the whistle blows...they gotta fix this...its just STUPID.

The thing I don't like about super slow motion replay is that everything looks like a catch when you freeze frame it in guys hands. But the reason the ref called it incomplete is because the ball was in Floyd's hands and then instantly out. I don't think it was that bad of a call but still the ref's need to look at full speed replays to judge a catch IMO.
