I'll admit it, I wouldn't have been upset with him being canned after last season. I was mildly supporting that conversation on IE.

This season reminded me of why I think Brey is a great coach. I hope everyone took note of his timely timeouts thorough the ACC tourney and NCAA tourney. Almost after every TO, the team made great adjustments and went on a run. That's coaching.

The same thing can be said about great half-court execution. Roy Williams often gets criticism for not being a good coach because his teams are often terrible at half-court basketball. Brey's kind of the opposite of Roy Williams. Brey doesn't get top recruits and his teams execute well on half-court sets. That's why Brey wins so many COY awards.

Also, Mark Few commented about his post-season failures rather poignantly. He said it's largely a crapshoot. I think that's right. Unless you're no kidding far better than the opposing team, winning that many straight games against very good competition requires some luck. The far superior teams win at a higher clip. (Izzo is the only exception. Seriously, how does he always pull out a tourney run?)

I think the key difference is that Brey finally has enough athleticism on this team that it no longer has to live and die by the 3. As much as I loved how Tory Jackson, Carleton Scott, Eric Atkins, and Ben Hansbrough played, and as popular as Harangody and Cooley are, those teams had about a tenth of the athleticism we do this year. This year is also the first where there isn't one player who is depended on to make a comeback (McAlarney, Harangody, Hansbrough) by himself. Grant is capable of it, but every player on the team can make clutch shots, and Auguste proved against Butler he can hit clutch free throws. So the criticism of Brey was not wholly unwarranted, but I think this season shows that his teams played the way they did because of a dearth of athleticism, and not because of lack of depth (as I thought) or an inability to adjust in-game.

Greatest team in ND hoops history? What team has achieved more? Their Final 4 run was great, and so was upsetting that UCLA team. But I don't think any ND Men's BB team has ever matched this team's accomplishments.

Draftexpress has Demetrius Jackson as the 25th rated prospect. I don't think Brey should be canned if next year goes poorly, but man. If Jackson declares(which I think is unlikely), next year will be scary bad.

I think even if DJ leaves, which I agree with you in saying that is unlikely, this team wouldn't be awful, at least not as bad as last year. A starting lineup of Vasturia, Beachem, Colson, Geben/Torres?, and Auguste would be a solid lineup. Would not score nearly as many points as this year, but I still think this lineup would hold its own in the ACC.

Never heard/read anyone ever saw anything remotely negative about Brey as a person in all his years here. He's coaching at one of the hardest Power-5 programs to win at. So excited he is finally having some tourney success.

If we had Cooley this year we'd be a 1 seed on the opposite side of the bracket of UK. He'd fix what ails us. Rebounding, hands that don't give up turnovers, much better post moves than Zac and a bit better at passing out of the post.

Also DJ is projected to be the 22 pick in the draft after this one. No one sees him going after this year. But is he keeps going off like this who knows...

We should definently fire Brey! It took him too long to take us this far in the tournament. Beating Duke and UNC not once but twice in the same year should always happen! To not do so definently deserves a firing and it has taken him way too long to do any of this! He should definitely be fired!
