Not sure if this is a good idea or not. but list your favorite Irish position group or groups and give a reason why.

my number 1 has to the Linebacker group we have.

Obviously Manti is reason enough to love this group, but the depth at this position is great! i think Calabrese is an awesome backer and he instantly became a favorite of mine when he blasted owen marecic on that 3rd and 1 play last year! plus you've got Shembo making awesome plays on the outside, and Fleming with loads of talent as well. then with Spond, Moore, Mcdonald, Fox(next clay matthews) poz, filer and utupo all battling for time. not to mention the talented freshmen including the Predator ishaq, jarret grace, troy niklas, rabasa, and councell. This group could be the gem of the defense for years to come.

and with only Manti's spot really locked down its gonna be a blast watching these guys all year.

The Dline was a very Close second for me.

I'd like to hear everyone else's favorite position groups as well.

D-Line. Although, at this point, it's all based on potential and speculation.

Tuitt, Nix, Lynch have looked scary, but not one of them have played a down. All three of them have 4 years left to play.

Tight ends. It is one the elite position groups in the country, has been for years, and will be for years to come.

i agree the potential for greatness is there. we are solid up front with EJ, Kap, and Cwynar/Nix. The depth is young but could be very good. I would look for Schwenke to backup EJ, and Tuitt/Lynch splitting reps behind Kap. could be a scary unit if they all get clicking.

DL. EJ - Cwynar - KLM followed by Tuitt - Nix - Lynch is easily the most loaded 2-deep for any position group on our roster.

I think schwenke is pretty talented as well. dont forget him.

i think the dline has gained depth but our second string linebackers(whoever they are) could be better than a lot of teams starters.

ok....not really a position group, unless your saying you want the punt return group to be your favorite.

Still a great play tho, Zibby was awesome.

I'm going to say the defensive backfield. I know we haven't had the talent at d-line, but i think the same with the defensive backfield. Three talented safeties and two very good corners. Throw in in Lo Wood, he added the weight needed, who has been getting praise from BK. Coaches say even even Bennett Jackson has showed that he can be very good he just needs to do it more consistently.

There was worry at the depth of CB and it looks like that concern is for not. I think this will be an exciting group to watch.

Schwenke is up to 296 lbs. I think he's being groomed as a SDE. I'd agree his development has been a pleasant surprise, but my post above was only concerned with 2-deep. You think he's plays before EJ or Tuitt?

We have stars at Cat and Mike, but Will and Dog are unproven or incomplete. Carlo's a good run stuffer, but he's weak in coverage. Shembo showed lots of promise last year, but we saw very little of him. And I'm curious why you're so high on our 2nd LB unit. Dan Fox, Danny Spond, and Kendall Moore are complete unknowns.

We have reasons to be optimistic, but best unit on the squad? I don't think so.

just like youre high on tuitt/lynch im high on the future LB prospects. i saw shembo play and spond is giving him a run for his money for PT and fox is doing the same with Calabrese.

i think Ej -cywnar/nix-Kap is the starting dline, with kona behind Ej and lynch/tuitt backing up kap, kona might even slide inside, heck with the amount of dline players we have i wouldnt be surprised to see some four man fronts.

i didnt say best on the squad but they are my favorite unit. the 3-4 is a system that is built for the linebackers to make a lot of plays. its going to be crucial to have very talented linebackers and i think we have very talented backers, just not the potential star power names like tuitt/lynch/nix

I am going to go against the grain on this and say my favorite group is the Quarterbacks. We haven't had depth like this for a long, long time. Even some of the QBs that haven't played yet don't worry me as much as before.

I don't feel there is as much of a talent gap between our starting QB (or QBs) to the guys on the sideline. It might not necessarily be seemless, but it doesn't worry me as much as it used to.

You guys make good points. It's been a while since the Defensive Line & Linebackers have been a favorite for the Irish fans. Those two groups have a ton of depth and talent. It's going to be an exciting 2 years to see how Diaco implements his hybrid defense. He wants to shift between 3-4 & 4-3 defenses, sometimes having 2 DT's and other times having Ishaq/Shembo with their hand down. It's going to be really cool to watch him mess with offensive schemes.

I will say the QB's. Someone has to feed Floyd the ball. Plus, I like the depth and versatility with regards to experience, arm strength, speed, and ability to win. I feel like each one brings something different to the table.

Second unit are the specialists, but as a former kicker, I am partial to them. Ruffer is a beast.

The d-line is the most intriguing and anticipated postion group to see this year because every is expecting them to crush the offense, but I'm going with the WRs.

Floyd is the best we've ever had and he's going to have a killer season. Riddick is Riddickulous! And someone will step up for as a productive 3rd or 4th receiver.

Dunno. Maybe it was the booze. Maybe it was bad shellfish. Or, maybe an image flashed in my brain of you doing the "Monkey Lotus" pose.

Funny you should mention one of my least favorites. I'm not as nimble as I used to be.

Excelsior!
