Just curious who everyone's favorite player to ever strap on the gold helmet was.

I'll start: Todd Lyght

Close 2nds: Chris Zorich, Dave Duerson

Michael Floyd

He was my favorite player the first year I started following recruiting like the rest of you crazies on here, I watched film and did alot of studying on him before he committed. I got into the recruiting game and Mike was with me for that first journey. I'll follow him for the rest of my life, his NFL team will be my favorite NFL team.

2nd: Even though he's an ARSEhole...Joe Montana

Don't hate me, I just can't say some old guy from the glory days is my favorite because I didn't get to experience that first hand...not that I experienced Montana first hand...but I have lots of games on DVD and I've seen tons of hiim...

If I gotta go to the legendary "Before my time" players...
Gotta go with Knute Rockne!

HE BUILT ND into what it became and is returning to.

Wow, so hard to choose....

Marc Edwards is my favorite but the Rocket is the best college football player I have ever seen.

Favorite recent player is Zbikowski. I know he doesn't get a lot of love from too many Irish fans, but he was a X-Factor in my book. Punt return vs. SC is one of my favorite plays of ALL TIME.

I idolized Bryant Young and Aaron Taylor when I started playing ball.

I don’t have a lot of knowledge of the pre-90 players other than cut-ups, but I became a fan of Notre Dame because of Ricky Watters, Chris Zorich, and Todd Lyght.

Right now though, Manti Teo will more than likely end up my favorite of ALL TIME.

So far only one player mentioned that played before the 1980's.

I grew up in the 80's, so it would be hard for me to pick guys that played before my time, but obviously my admiration and respect for the old guard is there.

Rocket is my favorite too. I was going through a real rough patch (military school) and Rocket and The Irish pulled me through.

There's a lot of number twos but there's only one Rocket.

Great choice. When Michael Steel published, "The Fighting Irish" in 1996 he listed the ND All Time Team. Gipp was selected for the FIRST Team at Halfback, at Kicker, and at FS.

Only one other player, Leon Hart, was selected for more than one position. Hart was selected for Tight End and for Defensive End, both on the SECOND Team.

I'd have to include the Rocket, Golden Tate, Zorich, Autry Denson, and maybe Quinn and Shark.
