I'd go Gotze, I was all ready to have to defend that pick, then saw 23 took him too... Cool... If he's off the board I go Omar..............

On a side, 23 ( or anyone) what do you know of this Wood kid? I honestly had never heard of him before the Dutch game... Is he legit moving forward or is he just a filler who looked good the past two games?

Wood actually was loaned to a team in the German 2. Bundesliga this season Ezgerbegie Aue... that got relegated to 3. Liga. He is returning to 1860 Munich in the 2. Bundesliga but it looks like he will sign with a better squad that is either at the top of the 2. Bundesliga or low level Bundesliga. His club situation is quite interesting. He isn't on the Gold Cup roster because he is going to get that sorted out.

He was in the dog house for the first half of the 2014-2015 season at 1860 Munich so they loaned him to the other squad... first game for this team he scores... second game he scores... and then he got injured and missed 2 or 3 months. He is young and has a load of talent. Similar playing style to Lukaku of Belgium.

Jordan Morris nearly scored again today. That would have been the ultimate troll job. Stanford student scoring on the best team in the world.

Neuer was a thought as well. Not only is he supremely talented but he has a very high soccer IQ. not as young if we're taking age into account at 29, but he still has 8 more good years at least.

I'd have Pmar in my back line so I wouldn't really even need a keeper....

What I think the Gold Cup starting XI should be..

-------------------------Guzan-------------------------
Yedlin--------Gonzalez-------Brooks----------Beasley
----------------Beckerman-----Morales-----------------
------F. Johnson-----------------------------Zardes
-------------------------Bradley---------------------------
------------------------Dempsey(Altidore won't be fully healthy)

It probably won't be that though. I think it would be a waste if they don't start two forwards if Altidore is fully healthy. Would love to see the attack of Altidore and Dempsey up top with Bradley at CAM and Johnson and Zardes as wingers with Yedlin coming in as a change of pace.

The team has some depth. It was hard to leave Diskerud, Bedoya, and Besler out of that starting XI

With current form a factor I would think of replacing Zardes with Diskerud and tweaking the positioning a bit... Also, you think he rolls with Beasley again?

I am not a Beasley at LB fan at all, but I don't think Jurgen brings him out of retirement if he doesn't plan on using him. IMO

Homer picks?

John Brooks. Always good to have a central defender thats a stud. He has all the tools on the ball to be elite and is just 21. He has a real chance to be special if he can become better at marking off the ball.

Man bro, Brooks is definitely a homer pick LOL. I mean, I'm rooting for the guy but he has to cut out a TON of mistakes. His mistakes have been glaring ones that have lead directly to goals. I'm rooting for him, but I'm a bit more down on him than you are. His age is a plus though.

My under 25 homer pick for center back is Marc Bartra from Barca. I love his game and I think next season they'll give him more PT. They just got real comfortable w the Pique (playing out of his mind this year again) Macherano pairing and he played far less.

Rooting for Mexico to get crushed, don't care otherwise, tho I'd love to watch... I don't think it's on standard tv though right? I'm looking forward to the days when all these cups are carried by someone, U.S. Open. Included... It's coming eventually

Same. They have a favorable draw, too. If they advance, they will not have to face Argentina or Brazil in the quarters. Jackson Martinez is my favorite non-American player at the moment so definitely rooting for them.

Sounds like he's going from Porto to Milan

Mets are 4 games over through 62 games. "Good year" compared to previous seasons? Sure. Good year by MLB standard? No.

ROI football, i disagree. An above average team playing in a huge pond. They'll never win a group in WC or Euro quals. We're relying on a playoff this go around in the Euro quals, with top 2 in a group going through and third go into a playoff.

To touch on the UEFA point... Can you say, with confidence, Ireland qualify automatically in CONMEBOL? I'm a dual citizen of Ireland, and am very biased toward Ireland, but we'd be just as hard up in South America. CAF? Tight. In CONCACAF or AFC, you'd have a better argument for automatic qualifying. Everything else, playoff is the most likely scenario.

imo, of course

It must particularly kill you than to see the news that broke in the past week or so about FIFA paying Ireland not to protest the playoff for the 2010 WC...

Ireland has scored!

NDinLA-- in regards to your earlier post bout my homer pick in John Brooks. I realize it was major homer, but for me against Germany, he was the best defender on the field, including the German defenders.

Germany played without Hummels, Boateng, Höwedes, Mertesacker, etc.

Off topic:

Honestly, it is great to get a win against major European powers, but I'm not getting excited about the USMNT until they show up at a major tourney when these countries are heavily invested.

Oh I know it was a homer pick. I do those all the time (I still watch every Fernando Torres game lol); I just think that we need to see A LOT more from Brooks for him to be a starter. A this level, you just can't have the mental mistakes that he has had, many of which have lead directly to goals (throw Chandler into that mix as well - ugh). But yeah, the talent is absolutely there, and giving him a consistent partner for more than a couple games would help.

Also, good to hear about that Germany game. It is sitting on my DVR, as I was on vacation so I haven't watched it yet.
