He's really taking a risk here. His managerial career could be over before it even starts.

Why? Dont they kinda suck? Chance to manage professionals in a live setting. Hope they have reasonable expectations.

Rangers fans still live in the ‘greatest team in world history’ mindset... and they just won the title from Celtic next year, and they’re signing Torres and others that they have literally zero chance at given the current economics in Scotland... Stevie is batty from my perspective, he will be given little to bridge the gap, little time in which to do it, and will be dealing with a fan base that’s stuck in the 1990s with the idea that Rangers are still Rangers.

Seems like a pretty safe job to me. As long as he stays above third place Rangers fans should be content which doesn't seem too difficult given the league.. If in the event he somehow dethrones Celtic, or even comes close to it, it'll lead to much bigger jobs.

Celtic have 3 times the budget of Rangers at present due to CL money coming in every year. Look at the disorganization and chaos within the club at present. It's a total poison chalice job. He should have looked at what Joey Barton is doing at Fleetwood and taken a football league job

I can safely say there is no group/base in American sports that is remotely as delusional as Ranger fans... it's been surreal coming from an States-side perspective. They honest to goodness think they are Real Madrid, only better as they are more holy in their social and religious crusades. If you aren't all up in it it's almost impossible to really put into words.

You guys laugh but who is gonna finish ahead of them besides Celtic and maybe Aberdeen every year? Celtic has 3 times the budget, but Rangers will have 3 times the budget of everyone else. It's a joke league. Every team in MLS would finish ahead of every team in that league besides Celtic. That's about as safe a bet as you can do if you're Gerrard. He's guaranteed top 3. If he doesn't he deservedly gets canned.

they were top 3 this year and it was still felt as a epic failure by the club.

Hibs, Hearts and Deen can all finish ahead of them but that's not really the point... the point is they will turn on him so fast if he doesn't WIN THE LEAGUE next year. I'm laughing because you said they'd be happy finishing above third. No, they absolutely will not be... They will want a league title in 2019 and a deep run into Europe by 2020, because,... "We Are The People."

Good news is maybe this gets SPFL some attention it's lost in the last ten years or so... it's been tragic that just as the States and others move tons of eyes and money towards Euro leagues, Scotland falls flat on it's face economically. There was a day when Celtic and Rangers were on par with the top fourish~ of England and Hibs, Deen, Hearts were on par with a mid table or low third EPL club... the money (which in some ways between England and Scotland was a zero sum game) flow into England killed all that off and then some. Hopefully this helps bring attention and hopefully a TV contract or two...

I don't know about the rest of you, but the last few years of El Clasico just haven't done it for me.

El Classico was cool when Barca were a ton of homegrown guys with a few outsiders and Real were the opposite.

t was a lucky break for Rangers that Gerrard makes big career decisions with his stomach rather than his brain, because a dispassionate, logical analysis of what they were offering would conclude that it was quite possibly the worst opportunity in soccer.

The really difficult part of managing Rangers is that Rangers fans still expect to get the better of Celtic even though all the numbers say they can’t. Barring some miraculous financial transformation their situation is essentially hopeless, yet the expectation remains as high as ever.

Unless you're a huge fan of one or the other it's always felt like watching the evil empire play itself imo... I've never had any real interest.

Like I was sayin...

IF they can somehow manage a miracle run at a league title (just playing along for a second), it won't 'make it all better'. That base will just shift their aim at deep Euro runs as a base expectation and if Celtic can't do that currently in Scotland there is no freakin way Rangers can... there is no avenue to appeasement for Gerrard that I can see, none. I'd put it at about 50/50 that he is out or clearly heading that way this time next year.
