Denbrock to OC

Being HC at Buffalo is not on the same level as OC at ND. That's more like a DII job. I would guess he would have less pressure to succeed at Buffalo than at ND. If he wants to be a HC at a major program someday then the path has to be easier taking the OC job. Then he can say he ran his own program and has experience with the big boys as well.

I think it is mixed, at best, though.

On one hand, you have Turner Gill who landed a job a KU, which wasn't as bad as they are now, but for all the love he got, not the biggest jump in the world.

On the other hand, you have three coaches that have gotten head gigs under BK at ND (UMASS, MU and UCONN). Not sure those guys got positions that are any better than KU (at the time).

To me, I think the bigger difference would be that if he leaves UB now, he does so after showing progress and promise. He goes to ND and gets more momentum, which looks even better in the end. Compare that to the idea that maybe, just maybe, he over-achieved at UB this year and his first three years are more symbolic to the long term than 2013 is. If that were the case, he has nowhere to go but down at UB and ND is the emergency flotation device.

Something to consider with the Buffalo job. Back when Quinn took the job there was talk of something called UB2020. It was a massive build project to take the University to the next level.

A lot of the construction on the North Campus, where the football facilities are located, was to include a new state of the art field house and other training assets. Consider that Buffalo, being Buffalo, does not even have an indoor football facility. UB2020 was to take care of that.

Sadly, the politicians from Downstate where all of the power sits, did not like UB spending this kind of money. They also did not like the idea of tuition increases. UB, by and large, is a very cheap school to attend. So the project was killed and nothing is going to happen.

Anyways...it's very possible that Quinn was sold a bill of good that UB was going to go to the next level. The former AD was a guy from Michigan who bounced to UCONN. 4 years ago the writing was on the wall for UB to make a play. That's not going to happen now.

So if you're a HC at Buffalo and know that it's NEVER going to get easier or better...why stay. Also, when you see CM and BD bounce to Miami and UCONN...while you're sitting at Buffalo....

I think the sell of taking one step back to take 15 steps forward makes a lot of sense.

This is all before pay comes into the conversation. That's just icing on the cake.

in fairness thats probably a standard situation for the MAC. NIU went to the Orange Bowl and they had to rent out a local indoor gym to practice during the winter.

To take this one step further, what happened to the last 2 NIU coaches?

One went to Minnesota and the other to NC State, which are pretty good gigs. If you win consistently in the MAC, you will be rewarded. UB is not a place where that can happen IMO.

Sampson saying this morning that he believes it will be Denbrock at OC and Patterson as QB coach. Patterson seems to fit the bill as an Elliot type coach. Not looking to climb the coaching ladder its more about coaching collegiate athletes in any capacity.

Ub2020 passed but I don't believe it has anything to do with sports, more about developing the medical and engineering fields

Good article on Patterson and all he has gone through, plus his ties to Diaco and Quinn:

Bob Diaco returns the favor, hires Don Patterson

Wow, that was pretty crazy how the AD was trying to oust Patterson after his battle with cancer, and then lied to him about the players not wanting him back. What an a-hole. Thanks for sharing, glad BobD is giving him a chance to coach again.

Must have been gutted in the plan. Here is the only image I could find. When you look at the 2020 site now, there is no mention of this field house.

This was supposed to go at the North End of the stadium and be 'world class'...

I grew up near UB and was excited for this project...which is why I remembered this component of the project.

We need an announcement. Today. On someone. For OC or DC.

Are you trying to infer that hiring someone would be good for momentum at this critical juncture in recruiting?

Because if that's what you are saying, you couldn't be more wrong.

Gee, thanks Ryan

The article says that Quinn has been working very hard at replacing members of his coaching staff, so a move is unlikely.

However, it does mention that leaving for ND might be a smart business decision. A succesful stint at Buffalo followed by success as ND's o-coordinator would put him in great position for big jobs moving forward. The flip side would be staying at Buffalo and trying to sustain success despite heavy coaching/personell losses.

The tweet itself is misleading lol.

Seems like Quinn is the most talented of applicants, but if this would be the most temporary replacement for OC because he's so likely to leave and leave fast, do we really want him for a year/two years? Constant turnover at the OC doesn't sound good IMO.

IMO, I would love to see Quinn/BK reunite with Golson at the helm and DD, Robinson, Fuller, etc. running routes, even if it's just a year or two. BK and Quinn go together like lamb and tuna fish. It would be spectacular. It would also leave another year or two for one of the other offensive coaches to put themselves in position to be OC.

I agree with this post.

I, however, would've omitted the bolded.

After reading up on Patterson, I think that would be the best course to take.

This follows Pete's thinking:

I'm sure BK is pulling out all the stops to sway Quinn into coming to ND.

-Increased exposure at a Tier 1 school
-National Champion potential
-Increase pay
-Every move he makes being talked about ad nauseam.
-Wearing UA gear 24/7
-Etc. Etc.

Diaco will definitely be outside Quinn's house tomorrow morning in Buffalo with bar bells in hand.

I've never thought it realistic for a guy who is head coach and running his own program to willingly step back down into a coordinator position.

I can't speak for all coaches, but for most of them, the dream is to be the head honcho and have a program of your own. Were Quinn to get fired from Buffalo, I could very much see him coming here as an O-Coordinator. But to step away from all the kids you've recruited into your OWN program and to be the #2 guy somewhere else, no matter the prestige, seems like high hopes on our end.

Sometimes you guys have to take a step back, stop looking at things as Notre Dame diehards, and use some logic.
