Michgan might seriously finish 6-6 with him healthy or not. Yes, teh kid is electric but Michigan is only a play or two better than Indiana, UMass, etc. right now.... and that is scary.
I wonder if 8-4 with losses to OSU and Michigan St. is good enough to keep Rich Rod's job or if they'll fire him for Harbaugh.

It'll be interesting seeing the bigger defenses they will play this year. MSU, Wisconsin, OSU, Iowa and PSU are either losses or toss ups. Illinois and Purdue should be wins. The worst they go is 7-5. All bets off if DRob gets hurt.

Michigan has the worst defense in the country, IMO. They are absolutely awful.

They're lucky they don't play Northwestern this year...that offense would shred them apart. I agree that they'll lose to these five though. If they get lucky, Denard will win 1, max 2 of these games single handily.

I think he's an exciting athlete from the standpoint that he is fast, has great agility and moves, and can make things happen on the football field. Is he a great QB? Not even close. I don't think his passing skills or accuracy are the stuff of legend. I think he benefits from the fact that he is in a system tailored to his talents and that no one else on Michigan seems to care if they get the ball. He looks like the fast kid on the playground running every play and everyone on his team is OK with it as long as they win. When they start losing to some good defenses, then the critics will come out. It's not like he's a super hybrid of Michael Vick and Peyton Manning or anything. He's a good football player, but he's an average QB.

Any other two teams. The importance of losing to MSU and OSU is that they are rivals and dropping three in a row against your rivals will get you fired.

This is a vid of every UM offensive snap in last years game. It's interesting to watch Denard absolutely terrorize the defense with his legs and then hear that Hoke will be lessening his running attempts.
Here is why this will work in our favor:
Denard is lethal with his legs and he made our D look foolish plenty of times that night. He apparently will not be taking off as many times this year. Thanks Brady.
He cannot, I say again, cannot throw the long ball to save his life. His 70% completion rate came from faking the QB keeper and slinging a 7 yard pass to the uncovered WR. His completion rate will plummet from having to stay in the pocket and actually be an accurate passer.
Hopefully year two of the defense means more discipline, better tackling and superior conditioning.
Watching this video reminded me of how frustrating it was to watch Denard. I see ND controlling him early while he's stuck in the pocket working his pro-style O.. But eventually his instincts will take over, especially when ND goes up a few scores and the pressure thickens. He WILL run and we will have to be ready to contain this kid again. I hope Diaco and crew are ready.

Watching all of their offensive plays I didn't notice anyone from the defense shadowing Robinson. I would think if they wanted to contain him, you put your fastest LB on him and just follow him everywhere.
I know this may be apples to oranges but in highschool during the state tournament we played a similar player. Our RB was actually our DE but our coach put him at LB and said to just shadow him. They normal ran for about 250+ and threw for about 250+, that was their average. Total they only had about 250 yards for the whole game. The game plan worked for us.

Using a Spy isn't a sure-fire solution.

It's just one possible solution among many. If you're relying on a Spy and he gets blocked, it almost guarantees a big run for the QB.
I'd much rather contain him through physical line play than a gimmick. The skunkbear OL won't be able to move our DL, and we're much faster on the edges now, so I doubt Denard will be scampering for huge gains this time around.

The defense actually did a very good job on Robinson. That guy is Hemi-powered lightning on turf. He broke a couple of big runs, but most of his runs were contained.
One of the problems with spying is that the spy can get caught WAY out of position. Teams can exploit that, using misdirection with the QB.
Didn't ND have a spy on him last year? I recall during Denard's long TD run a Michigan blocker drove his man deep and into the spy, tripping him up and taking him out of the play.

On that big run, it was Manti would got pushed about 10 yards back into the secondary. There was no spy. Harrison was coming across from the far side of the field and Manti pretty much got pancaked into his legs which gave Denard the open field. There was another good cut block by one of their WRs on I believe Motta right at the point of attack in the secondary and there was nobody left to slow him down at that point.

yes we used a "spy" last year and it absolutely killed us for big gashes....contain contain contain...making sure the olb keep things inside, de's remaining at home, not to mention our "high school speed" really did hurt us..we are fielding a much more athletic/faster/fresher team compared to last year...it didn't help we had guys going a wrong angles putting themselves right out of play and poor tackling was another factor....i really don't see that happening this year!!!

Too many times in that game did we see both the DE and OLB crash in and Denard sweep the outside.

even on the big run at the end of the game....even when we did contain, we didn't shed blocks and got blocked 20 yards down the field...and bad angles...

You want to put a spy on him? Take Carlo off the field and let Jamoris Slaughter spy. He is the only player that is not a vital starter who has the experience and athleticism to pull it off. And with that being said, he's still probably at least a step too slow.
The bright side to playing Michigan early is that Denard will still be learning. The downside is that we will have no good film on how exactly they plan to use him. So I think we shouldn't necessarily game plan for Denard how you would a Michael Vick... and instead we should focus on attacking Michigan with multiple looks (3, 4 and 5 man fronts and different kinds of pressure) to try and force their OL and Denard into mistakes. And when he makes those mistakes we need to actually intercept the ball or dive on the fumble unlike last year.
