My bro plays at GVSU. There has been the rumor that he would be the DC at ND in Michigan but Martin said to everyone that he doesn't foresee himself leaving only because his family is happy. Obviously that means NOTHING, but he hasn't been a DC since Kelly was at GVSU and has been running the offense the entire time since. Plus I would imagine the jump from D2 to a DC at ND would be HUGE. Could happen though I guess, but I"m hoping we get a proven guy from somewhere whose name does not start with a T and end with an anuta.

Go Lakers this weekend by the way - about to add another championship to the list.

My wife went to GVSU. Our alma maters are going to have a coach in common. Karma.

Didn't realize the ND connection with the TCU DC. With Patterson sticking around, no short-term advancement within TCU so a move out and up has a logic to it. I was researching DCs last night and there do seem to be a number of good DCs that could entertain a move to a higher profile/higher salary school. Get Kelly signed and let's get focused on the coaching staff and recruits.

I thought Pelini's brother was the DC...could happen, probably not though.

I was thinking about this the other day on another thread. The Nebraska DC is Bo's brother, which would make a lateral move a bit more unlikely, but not out of the question imo. Carl Pelini doesn't get the credit for what Nebraska's defense is doing, Bo does, so the idea of moving to another high profile place like ND and getting all the credit might appeal to him. The same could be said of Alabama's DC, for that matter. Same reasoning.

Whatever the case, if Kelly is hired, or any coach with more of an offensive leaning for that matter, I hope he give his DC some latitude to hire his own assistants. Not complete carte blanche because he's still the head coach and ultimately the responsibility falls on him, but a good amount. That way they can actually get a defensive system in place, not just a collection of coaches with some name recognition, which is what I think we saw under Charlie somewhat.

Good idea. Listening to a Cincy station last night and it seems Kelly has many years with his O coaches but they didn't mention long relationships with his D coaches. Maybe bringing in a DC and his staff would provide some stability.

OT: Stoops in Az is another brother situation. Muschamp - the heir apparent when Mack leaves? Venables maybe looking for his own HC gig? I hope no surprises, just a solid pick.

The problem is not with the coaches, it is with the players. Jon Tunata had a great defense at GT; he knows what he is doing.
We need to recruit good defensive players with an attitude. The only time our line could stop anybody was inside the two yard line.
Why is it that any (freshman) quarterback has an all-pro day against us and almost any good tailback gets a couple of hundred yards?
Charlie could recruit good to great offensive players, but he didn't have the slightest clue about recruiting defensive players.
The defense starts with a stout line; without that, you are blowing smoke.

I like Carl Dunbar, the Minnesota Vikings D-Line coach, although I am admittedly biased. Alabama's defensive coordinator is looking for a new job, for some reason. He is the leading candidate to become FSU's DC. We should steal him from FSU.

I agree that it was largely the players. But I think it was also a very big part the coaches. For one thing, part of the problems they had recruiting on defense imo was because of those coaches. Recruits looked at ND's defense and never saw a solid system being put in place. They went through 3 DCs in 5 years. Charlie hired a mix-mosh of coaches to begin with, with a college DC in Minter, but then mixed in some pro assistants like the guy from the Dolphins. There was never a system in place that lasted more than 2 years. Recruits didn't know what they were committing to.

If the next coach puts a system in, like in Nebraska, like in OSU, that recruits can feel strong about and know what their role would be, I think that alone would be a big help to recruiting.

Hope for Muschamp?

Hope for Muschamp?

Just read on ESPN.com that Mack Brown signed for a bonus and now will get paid 5 mil a year until he's done coaching. So far he has a contract until 2016... Does that mean there is hope to get a great defensive coordinator as our head coach?

Maybe he waits it out or looks elsewhere for an HC slot. I think he is in his mid-thirties. Is ND an advancement, does it improve his resume? Maybe a bigger payday?

talked about in the Defensive Coordinator thread

Really good article though - interesting read. I have seen Martin many times in person and he is a crazy man that would be great for ND's intensity and toughness. Interesting because it's the opposite of what he told everybody previously (not publicly but privately). Like I said before though what he had said previously obviously meant nothing.

I like the quote:

‘Would head coaches want to be a D-coordinator?’” Martin said. “And I said, ‘Well, I wouldn’t want to be a D-coordinator anywhere, but I am a Chicago Catholic -- if he wasn’t already in South Bend, I’d probably beat him there.’ I grew up and that was my team.”

A lot different attitiude that Bob Davie 15 years or so ago.

alot of wisdom in some of the earlier posts about system, and what recruits can buy into. I wonder if we have enough patience to get a system set.

IMO the next ND DC's survival requires him to have a vision, and recruit to it...but also be flexible, be able to live outside the system, and smart enough to use the personnel we have to be respectable while he transitions. Its clear to me none of the guys we've had under CW were capable of coaching in the transition...they just could not field a competitive D while their recruits grew up...that will still be the challenge for the next HC...guessing thats why Swarbrick wanted a defensive minded coach.

Urban and Kelly appear to be great transition coaches on the O side...just don't know who could do that magic on the D side...who has done that recently?

I love Matt Mitchell's quote in this article:

“It’s all over the message boards,” Mitchell said. “I’ve got friends and they read all that stuff. That’s coaching stuff. It’s a wild cycle. It’s a merry-go-round. If you spend too much time thinking about this, that -- if this, then that -- it’ll drive you crazy.”

This has been my life this week, and I'm shocked I still have a job ;-)

I love David Mayo. He's a columnist in my hometown. Anyway this is a good article and IF he can bring Chuck Martin for his d coordinator that would be SWEET. Chuck Martin is a beast of a defensive guy.

I'm from GR also...did Mayo ever get those marijuana charges taken care of?
