So Book should break the record for most wins in this game.
Where does he rank as an ND great?
Is he top 50 all around?
Top 10 QB?
Even now are we under rating him?
I'll bite, probably not the thread for in-depth analysis. That will be saved for the post season boredom discussion with the context of the 2020 season in its totality...and in the years to come.
Current QBR:
95.5 Mac Jones ALA
94.4 Justin Fields OSU
93.4 Kyle Trask FLA
90.3 Matt Corral MISS
88.4 Zach Wilson BYU
88.1 Dustin Crum KENT
86.7 Jayden Daniels ASU
86.3 Trevor Lawrence CLEM
85.8 Desmond Ridder CIN
85.0 (10th) Ian Book ND
Since one guy above plays for Kent St, and Daniels has played one game this year, Book is squarely in the Current Top 10 QB category statistically on average.
Top 10 ND QB? Bertelli, Lujack, Williams, Hornung, Huarte, Hanratty, Theismann, Clements, Montana, Rice, Mirer, Quinn, Book. He's on that list. It can be prioritized with Championships, Wins, and Stats.
All time ND greats? Well the 7 Heisman winners, the other QBs above, the members of the college football HoF starting with the likes of Gipp, the 4 Horsemen, Rocket, Page, Crable, Browner, Martin, Carideo, Zorich, Lynch, Casper, MacAfee, and then other greats still such as Brooks, Bettis, Tuck, Te'o, Nelson, Stanley, Zach Martin, Golic, and Taylor (the last two currently on the HoF 2021 ballot and will hopefully get their rightful recognition).
It's a long list...but to his credit, it is a good question and he put himself in the conversation. As time passes, Book will look even better in the record books and to the revisionists. If he beats Clemson a second time or Bama, the picture only gets clearer.
