Just unspeakable. I lose a little faith in humanity everytime something like this happens. Thoughts and prayers with the victims and their families.

Okay, guys. Here is the book. This shiit happens every day, all over the world. Doesn't happen much in the US. Whenever this happens, the first thing you hear, even before the screaming is subsided is "let's lynch him!" On some level it makes us feel better, both for the victims and ourselves. Yes, on some level we know that life is so fragile, and at any time, this could be us.

Bob, I am sorry for what your family had to go through. It just happens that one of the first responders, and the chief of surgery in the hospital that received the majority of victims were brothers, and I went to high school with both. I have heard a few times how bad that situation really was. (By the way, these guys communicated directly, which did save lives from their end.) It is a little different if you sign up for it, but it still doesn't matter. If you are human, that loss of life hurts, deeply . . .

If you are human.

Has anybody figured out how this guy got enought firepower in contact with as many people as he did. It is not as easy (assumption) as you may think.

This is awful. Prayers to all the victims. Can someone go to the Grotto and light candles for the victims. Anyway I am going to Denver tonight. Aurora is less then 10 miles away from Denver.

This is terribly upsetting. I have been thinking of taking my son to his first theatre experience (he is two). Now, I am not so certain. What is wrong with people.

Isn't wooly from up that way. Hopefully he is safe.

Thanks for the thoughts, fellas. This movie theater is actually pretty close to me, but I nor anyone I know was there. It is a tragedy.

For those that want details, there are 50 injured, 12 dead and 9 in critical condition.

The assailant came in from the exit door of the theater (there are mixed reports on how) and threw a can of tear gas into the theater. He was armed with an automatic oozie, a shotgun and a pistol. Once he threw the can in, he sprayed the audience.

The police are now at his apartment because he told them that it was armed with bombs. Reports say that they have heard the bomb squad detonating them.

Truly a tragedy of epic proportions. My thoughts go out to them. I don't know situations like this seem to happen every couple years here in Colorado.

I don't think he's making fun of the situation. I took it as he hopes they let him out so someone ****ing exterminates him.

I hope that was the intention but it didn't come off that way. Took it to PM and he set it straight.

This kind of disgusting crap being on the rise, I must admit I think about it everywhere I go now. I am checking exits, eyeballing people and formulating emergency plans in my head everywhere I go.

I worry about my children's schools, my church (very easy target, to be honest), the malls and even the movies. Anywhere there are big crowds. Our State Fair is happening next month and I will worry about it there, too.

The Tennessee conceal/carry permit is only a $50 class and I believe I will be taking it.

Just found out that my friend that used to bartend at Mulligans (for those who are familiar with the South Bend area) was in theater #8 and heard the bullets and witnessed them coming through the walls...He's ok though...Prayers to all those affected. Yall stay safe wherever you are. I always find myself getting upset that it takes an event like this to remind me to make sure that I tell those that I'm close to that I love them everytime I see them

It wouldn't of helped one bit in this situation. He tear gassed the entire crowd and was decked out in kevlar body armor and a gas mask. He came in like a SWAT team member. They haven't released anything but his name and age, but this guy seems like he was a trained killer to me.

When I first heard what he was wearing and armed with, the first thing I popped in my head was this movie. Who knows if he didn't have more planned if he wasn't caught in the back parking lot.

Perhaps not in this situation, I won't split hairs on that, but it would be better than not having one when I need it.

I'd be willing to bet mental illness is involved here. 50 years ago, James Holmes may have been in an asylum. Now we leave our mentally-ill citizens to their own devices until they turn into a Jared Loughner.

Prayers for the victims: those who perished, those injured, and those who now have to live through the nightmares that this will bring on.

My heart goes out to the families of those impacted

Not sure if anyone saw this: http://http://deadspin.com/5927673/aspiring-sportscaster-killed-in-shooting-at-colorado-movie-theater

But go to this story and read the excerpt from her last blog post on Busted Coverage. Absolutely unreal.

Jessica Redfield was a former intern on the sports radio that I listen to daily (104.3 The Fan). Too sad.

I am guessing that he is former or current military that has gone over the deep end. That part of Aurora is close to the Army base and if you tie that with automatic weapons, tear gas and body armor, I think it seems like he was trained in how to raid large crowds.

Perhaps not in this situation, I won't split hairs on that, but it would be better than not having one when I need it.

I'm not an anti-gun whacko or anything, but I just feel like situations like these rarely afford the opportunity for a person with a concealed carry to do a damn thing. In this case, with all of the commotion and tear gas, I think someone trying to play hero could have caused even more casualties. But I understand your point.

PS - That comment wasn't an invitation for anyone to engage in a gun rights/political debate. Please respect the situation and take that kind of conversation elsewhere. TN and I's back and forth is about whether it would help in this situation and isn't political. Let's keep it that way, shall we?

I just read that he recently dropped out of some sort of health sciences PhD program? Weird. Unabomber-esque, maybe. Facts still coming out.

Another stupid media thing trying to blame a book or music or movie for a killing.

It's a tragedy and it's awful that a person would take advantage of an event like this. Hopefully it doesn't steer people away from seeing the movie. People shouldn't let fear control them.

I actually think it's totally plausible, as a preliminary theory while we wait on more facts. "The Dark Knight Returns" is one of three comics (the others being Maus and Watchmen) that has drawn attention from the Academy and gets taught in college courses (not as much as the other two, but some). Christopher Nolan used it as inspiration for his Batman movies, or there is a clear aesthetic debt, at least. It's something that would definitely resonate with a disturbed intellectual (which this guy may have been ... waiting on more facts).

Problem with concealed carry is you have to abide by the laws, so you are not armed near public gathering places, bars, schools, etc. Just where some sociopathic moron would attack.

Advantage of a ccp is that you get treated better by the constabulary. Don't know about any other state, but in Ohio, you need a pretty squeeky clean record. So law enforcement tends to trust you and show more respect.
