Good news and Bad news for Samardzija today.

Good news is the Cubs scored three runs in the first five innings while Jeff pitched.

Bad news is the Cubs made three errors in that same time frame meaning that Jeff gave up four runs (only two of them earned).

I feel terrible for Jeff.

He's rich. Don't feel too bad for him.

Also I think it is hilarious that Mike Olt who is leading the NL in HR's (despite hitting under .200 but that's irrelevant) was just a throw in for the Matt Garza trade. That trade is looking more and more like a highway robbery every day.

Not leading the league in HRs...maybe HR rate? But his power is exciting. He was an untouchable in the Rangers system a year ago. The eye troubles scared everyone. I hope we plug him in, move Valbuena to 2B full time, and make Barney a defensive replacement.

I would rather see Valbuena and Barney flipped for live arms and Villanueva or Alcantara get a shot at the 2B job. With Castro holding down the fort at SS and Rizzo doing well at first base (and Olt showing some promise) the Cubs have a number of good/very good infield prospects who need places to land. Bryant should probably move to AAA soon and Villanueva is enough of a prospect that I don't want to see him shunted aside so Bryant can get 3B reps.

He probably would be leading the NL if they let the guy play more. Have to imagine he's probably tops in AB/HR

Samardzija doing work again today.

7 Scoreless innings.
Best ERA in all of baseball for starting pitchers 1.46

If the Cubs actually find a way to hold on to this 2-0 lead, Jeff should be all over the news tonight, especially since today's game was against the Yanks.

Jeff finally got his first win of the season yesterday striking out 10 and not walking anyone. Season ERA is 1.68

Three HOT double A prospects...

I'll be mad if we don't get 2-3 top 100 prospects with at least one being top 25. Heard Jon Gray, Dylan Bundy, Joc Pederson, Eddie Butler, and Julio Urias all as possibilities.

Would absolutely love to see a combo of Pederson and Urias.

Theo isn't going to give him away. His patience in the trade market is one of his strengths. Who thought we'd get so much for Garza (a 10 start rent-a-player)?

Everything people say is that Jeff hasn't been traded because Theo's asking price is huge. If he gets a good deal...great. If not, I think he'd pay to keep him around as a top end piece in the rotation. It's a numbers game...if he can turn Jeff into 2-3 arms, he's ahead.

I'm getting excited about the next couple of years.

Agree with everything, especially the bolded.

Anyone with any baseball sense knows that Theo and Co. are turning this team around the right way and that is building depth in the farm system. 3 top 15 prospects? 7 top 100 prospects? Would've never happened in the Hendry era. Barring unforeseen consequences the Cubs could be adding 2-3 more top 100 prospects by moving Hammel and Jeff.

It has been a while since the Cubs have made the playoffs but I think that once the team is in the right spot we could see a long run of playoff appearances and hopefully playoff success.

It only makes sense that the shark should come to the city by the bay. He'd be a great SF Giant.

Stumbled upon this tidbit today.

This year at AA, Bryant has hit .348/.452/.692 with 18 homers in 55 games.

Absolutely insane, can't be much longer till he is in Iowa.

I thought I just read an article that said cubs are determined to keep him in AA. Let me see if I can find it.

EDIT: not same article but here:Prospect Bryant impresses Veras during rehab | cubs.com: News

"He's having a great year, and we have a number of guys on that team playing well," general manager Jed Hoyer said of Bryant, who was the team's No. 1 pick in last June's First-Year Player Draft. "[Promoting him] is not something we've talked about.

"I think it's important to know a ballpark you're going to, who your teammates are. He's a guy we drafted [last June] and went to [short-season] Boise, then [Class A Advanced] Daytona, then [the Arizona Fall League], then Tennessee. It's probably important to have a few ups and downs with the club before we have that discussion."

Draft tomorrow night. Hopefully Rodon slips to us, if not I see them taking Conforto or a cheaper catcher who can hit and then loading up on arms throughout the rest of the draft.

Also found this:

So, Bryant’s headed for AAA any day now, right? Well, maybe, but Cubs manager Ricky Renteria told Cubs.com that the organization is “comfortable” with where Bryant is right now, and suggested there’s always things a guy can learn.

Totally fair. It hasn’t even been a year since Bryant was drafted, after all.

I do think, however, that we’ve reached the point where Bryant is not going to be challenged by the pitching at AA for any extended period of time, so that ship has sailed. If there are specific things he can work on (including defensively), then that’s fine. But I suspect we’ll see Bryant promoted to AAA around mid-June – and the Cubs will have to figure out what to do with AAA third baseman Christian Villanueva, who is a legit prospect (even if not quite in Bryant’s class).

I wouldn’t call it a “concern,” but the Cubs will have to consider their message if Bryant does arrive at AAA in mid-June, and proceeds to destroy AAA in the same fashion he tore up AA. The calls to see him at Wrigley Field in August and September will be overwhelming, even if not entirely reasonable (no cookies!). It’s a good problem to have, obviously, but it’s just something to keep on the radar. Perhaps a taste of the bigs this year will be appropriate for Bryant’s development, and I leave that decision to the Cubs’ developmental staff.

If he were called up after playing well at AAA, not only would there be service time considerations (a call up this year means Bryant reaches free agency a year earlier than if the Cubs waited to call him up until late April next year), but there’s also the 40-man roster spot that Bryant would occupy all offseason. In an organization that likes to play at the roster margins, that matters at least a little bit (having an available spot in the offseason, for example, is how the Cubs got current closer Hector Rondon).

Makes total sense, no reason to lose a year and a roster spot on a future star during a lost season.

Yeah for sure. I get that people are anxious to watch him hit. Hell I'm one of them. What's the rush though? No reason to bring him up to see him hit five homers and strike out 40 times in September and push his free agency up a year.
