Supposedly the Cubs offered Samardzija 5 years $85 million and were rejected without a counter-offer. Jeff and his peeps are almost certainly right he will get better offer in FA.

I guess now it's just a matter of when he's traded. I hope the Cubs can get some good value that's close to the majors.

Shark is a great pitcher and would really help a team that is bound to make the playoffs. Jeff deserves a playoff run, he's earned it.

Having a record of 2-6 with an ERA of 2.60 is ridiculous. He'd be considered one of the best pitchers in the MLB if he had a lick of run support

But the rumor is that he's looking for Matt Cain money...8 yrs/$140mil. That seems a bit high and much too long to me for a 29 year old.

I'd do something in the middle of the two offers. Maybe that's what Theo is thinking. Maybe 6 yrs and 100-110 would get it done?

It's also worth noting that he was 4-7 with a 3.35 ERA after 15 starts last year. He ended at 8-13 with a 4.34 after having an ERA of 5+ the rest of the year.

I've never read Matt Cain money. Everything I've seen has been comparing his wants to Homer Bailey ($105M).

I think he is a fool if he thinks he can get $140M.

Schwarber is an absolute stud.

-Overall, Schwarber is hitting .524/.580/1.095. It’s no surprise that he’s leading all 2014 draft picks so far in offensive production.

-In 12 games, Schwarber has six homers. If only his homers counted as hits in his 42 at bats, he’d have a .143 batting average.

-Schwarber has an incredible 11 extra-base hits in those 12 games (and 42 at bats). Nearly 1/3 of the times Schwarber’s plate appearances end in a ball in play, that ball goes for extra bases.

-I know what you’re thinking: but what about his plate discipline? Well, it’s pretty much been perfect. Schwarber has taken five walks (10% walk rate) and has struck out just five times. Generally-speaking, if a guy is walking 2/3rds as often as he strikes out, he’s doing well. Schwarber’s gone 1:1 so far. Also, when a hitter has more extra-base hits than strikeouts, he’s doing something really special. Schwarber has more than doubled his strikeouts with extra-base hits so far.

-Schwarber’s BABIP is .500, which you’d normally toss out as unsustainable, but when you consider the power, the discipline, and the 23.7% line drive rate (31.6% at Kane County), you realize that his BABIP is mostly just the product of him hitting the shit out of the ball.
Oh yeah, notice how his batting average is higher than his BABIP? That’s pretty much impossible. It requires you to almost never strike out (check) and hit a ton of home runs (check).

-A fun one: 60% of Schwarber’s outfield fly balls have left the park. Yes, so far, when he hit a fly ball out of the infield, it was more likely to fall in the parking lot than an outfielder’s glove.

-If all six homers had come in the Midwest League, which started in early April, Schwarber would already be 27th in the league. In 12 games.

-The median age in the Midwest League is a hair over 22, and Schwarber turned 21 earlier this year.

-In his 18 games at Boise last year, Kris Bryant hit .354/.416/.692, which was awesome. Again, through 12 games at Boise and Kane County, Schwarber is hitting .524/.580/1.095.

2 things. Arrieta is a stud...perfect through 6 and then no-no through 7 2/3 his next start. And Bryant hit a game tying GS today, giving him 6 HRs in 12 games.

Was surprised to see no major pitching prospects for 2 of the best arms on the market but I have faith. Epstein and Co haven't lost a trade yet.

According to Baseball Prospectus, Russell is the #6 prospect in baseball. That will give the Cubs the #3, #5, #6 and #18 ranked prospects in their mid-season top 50. In order that will be Bryant, Baez, Russell and Alcantara.

A couple of good articles on Epstein's approach to the Cubs future. In short, pitching reigns supreme in MLB, and teams with great bats are on the decline. Therefore the team with the most quality bats stockpiled is in a great position going forward.

And Kris Bryant, in 2015, of course. Run a platoon out in LF and they have a pretty decent looking lineup.

The Cubs also have something like $30 million coming off the books so they could go crazy and add Lester (already a rumored target) and somebody like Brandon McCarthy to the rotation. With Arrieta and a long cast to fill out the back end (Hendricks, Dubront, etc.) the pitching could grade out as pretty solid.

I don't think it's crazy that the Cubs have a shot at a winning record in 2015. A good number of things need to go right but there is loads of potential on the roster.

It's starting to come together. Baez will strikeout a fair amount, but his OPS and run production are outstanding. Bryant is going to be the minor league player of the year and Soler has been hitting a ton. It's a good time to be a Cubs fan.
