I'm not sold on Rizzo. He's young, but his batting average.........WOOF. He doesn't have enough protection in the lineup to only hit .250 and help the team win. And Castro looks like garbage at the plate.

The potential is there. But this team won't be like '03 for another 3-4 years. And there is no guarantee it'll pan out that well.

I just don't see it.

(Go Cards!)

Yeah Rizzo's BA is bad right now. But the Cubs are 18 games out of the division so it doesn't really matter for this year. He'll be fine

just messing with ya Rack

Junior needs to spend his whole off-season shagging fly balls, but damn is he exciting to watch.

Cubs really haven't had anyone like him in a while. Sosa was exciting during the roid rage, and Soriano would have his one month of terror every year.

But this kid is on fire. How do these young guys adjust after the scouting report is out on them though. That is always the thing.

Rizzo's average is god awful I agree but it is mostly because he can't hit left handed pitching to save his life.

I read a good break down on Castro not to long ago and it was saying until this year you almost didn't dare throw him a fastball but now pitchers are just challenging him with it.

I also read since we sat him a game before ASG break he is hitting back around .290

I think he will be ok but I am still not sold that he should stay at short.

As far as the cards, hate them but I always admire organizations that seem to never have a drop off. They know the game and how to run a business. Asset management is the name of the game.

Good riddance to the last of the Hendry mistakes. Sori might be a nice guy, but I would have taken the 6+ million and a bag of baseballs for him. Maybe some pizzas too. The trade definitely works for both teams as the Yankees didn't have to give up much and the Cubs essentially got some cash and a pitcher. Doesn't matter if he pans out or not, saving the money on Sori was the big win.

I wish the money was international. As we are already close to our 5.5 MM allotment and are about to sign a guy for another 2.5.

There is a cap on how much int'l $ a team can acquire and the Cubs have spent enough that they will get the max penalty even if they acquired the max amount allowed under the rules. Basically, their previous moves to acquire int'l $ were worthless.

Cubs get in return right-hander Corey Black, New York's fourth-round pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.

Black has posted a 4.25 ERA in 19 starts for Class A Advanced Tampa this season, striking out 88 batters and walking 45 in 82 2/3 innings. Across three levels last season, the righty had a 3.08 ERA over 52 2/3 innings.

His combined stat line in the Yankees organization is decent. He posted a 5-10 record with a 3.79 ERA and 138 strikeouts and only 45 walks in 135.1 innings pitched.

Corey Black is a 21-year-old pitcher who throws a fastball in the mid-to-upper 90s and also possesses a quality curveball.

Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1
Corey Black is prospect going for Soriano. #Cubs see as power rlvr in future, up to 97 mph, good curve. #Yankees

Black stands just 5'11" and weighs 175 pounds, but the velocity he generates is what you would expect from a larger, more powerfully built presence on the mound. Per Mike Axisa of River Rave Blues, Black hit triple digits on the speed gun during 2012.

Although the return may not be substantial they just need to keep funneling young talent into Wrigley. Farewell Fonsie!

Games like today are the games that just kill me. Obviously the Castro but even small things like when Barney got into the run down he could have made an effort to get into third base but just jogged off the field. Like I've said before, they just have a couple guys with a lot of talent who just don't always hustle. Wish everyone played like DeJesus and Schierholtz

Yeah me too. I have to watch the damn Cubs game while BoSox and the Yanks are squaring off. And it's blackedout on my MLBTV account. Kills me.

Cubs are on everyday on WGN...why the hell we have to watch this garbage on the Saturday day game?

That Castro infield fly/tag up was a joke...wow. Question, does that count as a sac fly since it was already called an infield fly? I think even though the runner tagged and scored it is still an 0 for 1 because the infield fly was called.

Get over the fact that the Yankees were actually off major TV ONE day...and WGN is NOT major cable anymore. I have MLBTV but not WGN due to DirecTV, but I do not think it has even been broadcast outside of the Chicago area in a long time, not since Harray Caray passed.

And not like the Yankees game won't be on ESPN tomorrow, anyway, which they are, because it is "The Best Rivalry in Sports", because ESPN says so, which JUST HAPPENS to be in NE.

And then they would have them on again on Wednesday, if they could.

GO CARDS!!

That's not true. Not even close. They only have 67 games this year. The rest went to Comcast Sports.

I think that that Yankees and Red Sox are on ESPN a total of sixty games a year, or at least it seems that way.

How often are the Cardinals on National TV?? They do not even have their own channel.

What do you guys think about Sveum being let go?

He never really got a fair chance but I think that is what everyone expected when he was hired more of a stop gap than anything.

Also, who do you think they bring in to replace him?

I don't think Girardi is going to happen but would be presently surprised if it does.

Yeah I feel the same. No way he could have been competitive in the division with the current roster. That said, the Cubs shouldn't have been as bad as they were. At one point just after the break they were only 7 games below .500 and wound up almost losing a hundred games. Castro and Rizzo's production fell waaaay off. Sveum doesn't deserve all of the blame but he certainly deserves some.

I'm excited to see who the replacement is. Girardi would be good but I don't see him leaving NY. Ryno already had a job. Wonder who they'll go with this time.

Rizzo's stats are eerily similar to Justin Morneau's in his first full season. He ended up being the MVP the following year. I think he's going to have a big one next year.

It'll be interesting. Hoping for Girardi. But I'd be okay with Pena and Alomar Jr. They both have great pedigrees.

I forgot about the first half when Marmol blew 200,000,000 saves and Sveum kept putting him out there, maybe he was being pressured by the front office but if he wasn't that is enough to lose your job, IMO.

Given Eric Wedge's comments when he left Seattle, I wouldn't be surprised if his philosophy would be very appealing to Theo's long term building project.

Eric Wedge debacle another embarrassment for Seattle Mariners - MLB - ESPN

I just think when you talk about building, you've got to have a long-term view of it," Wedge said when asked what the organization must do to improve. "You've got to be patient. And you've got to stick with the program. Even on the worst days, you've got stick with the program. Even when people are saying it's not working, you've got to stick with the program. Even when it's not on your timeline, you've got to stick with the program."

They were doing everything they could to raise Marmol's trade stock after his excellent 2nd half from 2012. It just didn't work.

The Dempster, Feldman, and Garza trades look really good right now though.

I'm thinking the jury is still out on Olt, but we'll see. His eyes maybe are just broken.

Really excited about the pitching in those deals though.

Yeah still some hope for Olt (aren't his vision issues concussion related?) but there are a myriad of candidates for 3B so I don't know how much patience the Cubs can have.

Love getting Edwards in the Garza deal. Grimm is another Jake Arrieta but even a damaged Neil Ramirez is icing.
