It's a good city. Not a great one like Madison, however. But that's just one consideration and you must look at the totality.

What questions do you have? Lived within 20mins of downtown my whole life haha. You are in for a shock if you do come down here, you have never experienced anything like Columbus during football season. Nothing like it. Words cant describe it.

In a good way? Lol. Well all I know about Columbus is it's a big city (~800k), much larger than what I'm used to in Madison. I also know the cost of living is very close to what I'm used to.

Outside of that, not sure exactly what my questions are, but just looking for any and everything (crime, night life, demographics, quality of schools -because this is a good indicator of culture IMO-).

it's an absolute zoo on gamedays, but like i said before they love their buckeyes there. HUGE parties all day and if you can get a seat in the Varsity Club on game day on lane avenue....you've done well

Lol, you will just find out if you come. You will probably scoot your ass back to Madison lol.

What city is your job in? That matters. Dont live ANYWHERE inside 270, unless its downtown/arena district/the lofts

Dublin, Upper Arlington, Hillard are on the west side. Good cities. Higher cost of living. Close to osu.

Id stay away from the South side Groveport, Grove City. Not a bad area but higher crime than the others.

East Side. Blacklick (where i live), New Albany, Gahanna, Westerville are great places to live. Pickerington, Reynoldsburg are so so pending the area you live in those cities. Further away from Cbus the better.

North - Avoid anywhere not named Polaris. North I wouldnt recommend bc traffic will be a bitch.

The school system reflect what I put above. Inside 270 there are great private schools, but they dont have a district so I would avoid those areas to live.

Night life. Polaris is a great spot, as well as Easton. 2 of the greatest malls, and bar scenes in ohio, if not the country for a non-tourist city. Arena District is the hot spot in Columbus. You will see multiple drunk osu players down there everyday of the week. Girls are easy. If you are on the hunt and come home empty thats on you. There a some nice bars across the city as most places, but you got to find the right one for you. If you are having a fight with your girl, or single....High Street is probably the place to go. It is the main street going through the heart of the osu campus. This is the spot you go for girls as well. Being 26 years old myself, there have been many memorable moments down there. The bars there are very entertaining, as well as just walking down the street.

On gamedays. I would not even attempt to go to the westside or downtown.

Lol, thanks. That was funny. And it's Hillard I believe. They said Columbus but when I read the information Hillard is the city named.

When did you change your name? I miss the oddly capitalized O in "POint"...

Of course, if you live north of the city, you'd be close to the cemetery where Woody Hayes is buried and you could swing by periodically and dance on his grave.

I have lived in Columbus for the past 8 years. I came down from Bowling Green State University for more of a job market and I have to say it was the best decision I have made. Tons of job opportunity in Columbus, and believe it or not, Columbus is one of the best technology/IT markets in the US. Plenty of large and small companies.

Columbus has a on of nightlife for all ages. As others have mentioned, the Arena District is amazing with the hockey arena, minor league baseball field, concert venues and bar scene. Columbus also boasts a large art demographic in the Short North. So much more, I could go on and on.

I live in Columbus, so of course I am not going to be able to compare to some of the other cities in the midwest, but Columbus really is a great city of opportunity and nice area to live. I am in Hilliard and am glad to be on the west side where a lot of activity is. I would try to avoid the south side of Columbus and maybe even the north side if you can help it. But that doesn't mean they are terrible areas.

PM me if you have more questions.

COLUMBUS OHIO

SUUUUUCKKKKKKKSSSSSSSS.

But seriously, it's probably the second best city in Ohio. I'm from Toledo (Toledo isn't the first), and have been many times. I hate it, but good job market, fun town.

My take on Columbus...........

It is what you make of it. Just like any other place. I've lived a pretty nomadic life; born and raised in Canton, OH... joined the Navy and ended up spending time in Memphis TN, Central(LeMoore) and Southern(Ventura) California, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, North Carolina, and now back to Ohio. There's plenty of outdoorsy stuff around here. Hocking Hills is close by....... Cuyahoga National Park is close by..... Lake Erie is close enough... and, perhaps most important; getting to South Bend for a game is simple! It's a town with pretty solid Midwest values, from what I have seen. The cost of living is very reasonable, and there are plenty of things to do. I've never been to Madison, so I can't compare the two, but I would recommend Columbus on it's own merit.

This is the best post I have ever seen about geography. I have family, mostly nieces, that live in Hilliard (If that is where the company is located, you can go out to Powell), Blacklick, and Westerville. I used to live in Reynoldsburg and work about two blocks from High on Main. Everything in this post is true. I like Westerville because of how family friendly it is, and all the community activites. Many styles of building, old and new. Pretty well located. But if the company is in Hilliard, that is all the further you need look. You are in good hands . . .

If you are under 25 you have to live within cab or walking distance of the Arena District and Short North. Don't live out in a suburbs until you have a family.

We've been over to CBus many times for wrestling. Easton is a very nice area as is Dublin.

Listen to this man. Not Turning Point.

Madison is one of the best small cities in the country, Columbus is quickly becoming one of the best large cities in the country.

I'm an urban planner, so I'd tell you that you'd be making a mistake living in the suburbs until you have kids.

The Short North/Victorian Village is one of the best neighborhoods in the country.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Clintonville.

TP was wrong in saying "don't live inside of 270." Really its don't live in the area that is both inside 270 and east of 71.

Yup! Look for a place off Neil Ave and south of 5th St.

I used to live in Clintonville. Nice neighborhood but you have to rely on buses and can't walk anywhere

Westside is getting better. But east/south/north i wouldnt recommend. I wouldnt recommend living close to campus either bc the crime rate goes up! Clintonville is nice, but just depends on if you like that 315/71 route! haha

Just can't live east of High St. near campus. Otherwise it's fine.

your young, go ahead and take the leap kid! find ut for yourself.
its what YOU make of it.

living in new cities, states....new jobs and opportunities...travelling the world....get it all out of your system now when you can--cause once the kids come these types of "life" decisions get waaaay more complicated and difficult.

Don't live by the fairgrounds. My family used to show horses and staying in the RV you'd be able to hear gunshots.... But other than that I love Columbus! Don't know much about the suburbs just that they are pretty nice all around. I don't like cities at all, but if I had to live in a city I would definitely pick Columbus!

can we get pics of the girlfriend?

No kiddin'. This ain't 'Nam, there are rules! Where the pics?

I grew up an hour north of Columbus. It's an okay town, it's not Chicago, but it's better than Cinci imo. Buckeyes will hate you as an Irish fan more than Michigan some days. Don't ask me why, they're not right in the head sometimes. Most of them are alright though.

Is the job downtown? I'm not a big city person myself, just curious. Theres some nice suburbs in and around Columbus, that's where I'd prefer to go myself if the option was there.

No pics of the girlfriend, although those are available in the 'post your pic' thread.

I am in fact going to move to Hillard, Ohio at the end of the month. Thanks again for all of the feedback about Columbus!

I'm going to start looking for a place to live tonight. Does anyone on here happen to have a place that'd be available to sublease from January 1 - summer-ish (doesn't really matter when lease would end)?

Preferably someone between 20-30, student or employed wouldn't matter as long as they're not throwing ragers on Tuesday nights.... I enjoy partying, but this will be a professional job so I have to grow up :(.

Or if you know of anyone who is looking for a sub-leaser that's responsible, that'd be great too.

I don't want to get my own place yet because I'd prefer to be close to at least one roommate who can show me the Ohio way, and also because it's going to be really tough to find a place that is not being rented since it's the middle of the leasing calendar.

Oh, and I have a 6 year old mini-Australian shepherd, BTW. He's the greatest dog in the world. Very active, friendly with dogs, cats, people, and is potty trained better than me:

IM me if you have any potential place, know of someone, or have any advice.

Thanks!

PS, rent price is very flexible. If need be, I could always survive student-style living for another year. I'm at a point where I don't have time to be picky!

Good Luck!! You, TP, and I will have to get together for a cold adult beverage or two, once you get settled in. I'm in Reynoldsburg, very close to TP.

Thanks, and definitely!

Maybe TP has room at the inn for me... That way I can get the inside recruiting scoop from a real live person and spare my time on IE and save you guys from my insufferable posts ;).

FYI, should have added... Although I have a GF, she will be living about 11 hours away from me for this lease time. Just wanted to make that clear because I've had roommates in the past where the GF basically lives with the roommate, and that CAN be the worst, lol. I'd be surprised if she visited more than once during this leasing period.
