Coaching Changes

DoN,

All OSU fans I know and a couple sites I have read stated that Urbie approached Hilestand when he was first putting a staff together.

There was an obviously no deal result. Further, I cannot believe that money was an issue for the Buckeyes.

The rest is timelining. Lay it out for yourself.

@TJamesISR:

Columbus Dispatch reports salaries of Meyer's coaches. Former ND coaches -- Hinton $275,000 and Warinner $350,000

Anyone know how that compares to what ND pays?

Wow, do they look bad! Hinton looks like he's been on a three week bender, and Warnier looks like that little kid in elementary school that everybody kicks the **** out of checking to see if the coast is clear!

@ChiTribHamilton:

This is good and bad news. Good, because it means Warriner didn't really make a horizontal move, since he got a promotion. Bad, because one has to wonder what we lost since Meyer made Warriner a co-OC.

Warinner's got the same job for a different employer. Maybe he got a raise but after being "passed over" he probably would have taken the job for a pay cut. Organizational dynamics.

Let's review:

Warinner (one "r" and a double "n") was the OLine Coach at ND and is the OLine Coach at OSU.

Warinner was the Running Game Coordinator at ND but is the Co-Offensive Coordinator at OSU.

He went from 100% responsibility for half the ND Offensive Game Plan to responsibility for 50% of the entire OSU Offensive Game Plan.

Pssst, that's not a promotion. Even the two job titles, Running Game Coordinator and Co-Offensive Coordinator, take up the same number of spaces, 24. Running Game and Co-Offensive both use 12 spaces. HR departments pull this schtick all the time. "You been promoted. We're giving you a new (read, different in HRspeak) title (for doing the same thing). Congratulations."

From Warinner's ND Bio:

Ed Warinner
Position: Offensive Line/Running Game Coordinator

Veteran offensive line coach Ed Warinner enters his 28th year in college coaching and second at Notre Dame. He has added the responsibility of running game coordinator in 2011.

Going off in in a different direction here. When I heard that Bob Diaco was going to become assistant head coach and that Cooks would be co-defensive coordinator this made me wonder " Will Diaco be up in the booth -or will he move to the field with Cooks in the booth-or will they both be in the booth "?

I don't know how much would be lost if Diaco didn't have a birds eye view of the game but it would be something to see all his energy down on the sideline during a game.

Does anyone else here think that "assistant head coach" might mean he will end up on the sideline?

In his previous coaching roles has he spent time on the sidelines during the game?

Hard to say...can't know all the details. But, I would guess they could handle having Bob on the field. I don't recall a game where we were getting gouged, and then his bird's eye view resulted in "shut em down" adjustments. I think he does pretty well with an overall scheme and even a weekly plan that makes the d really do well...but like I said, not so sure about in-game. It might just be his strength is on the field, and Cooks is a better guy to react to in-game scenarious with an adjustment scheme, and Bob is the guy to communicate it to the guys...really hard to say at this point other than to say that idea is at least feasible based on my impression some games.

The man just breathes energy. It is hard to watch an interview with him and not want to go out and hit something.

Is there going to be another coaching hire? Or is Cooks going to coach all the DB's and Booker the WR's?

When is Heistand (spelling) being announced as official?

Soon?

In a 1/12/12 Eric Hansen article,

Notre Dame football: Hiestand may bring culture shock - wsbtradio.com

he noted:

The only thing holding up the announcement apparently is ND's
uber-thorough, uber-protracted human resources screening process, put
into place roughly a decade ago after the George O'Leary résumé flap.

After the Early Enrollees are all in class. Kelly might have a presser to handle the new coach and the new guys.

nice update/clarification...thanks

we still do have room for one more coach on staff correct?

wouldn't mind bringing in a guy with some special teams background, who of course can recruit.

Does anyone have a clue if Booker is taking over db's or wr's?

Notre Dame: Sources close to the program tell us that decisions haven't been finalized; however multiple sources tell us to look for Gary Darnell to join the staff. Through his career, Darnell has served as head coach at Tennessee Tech and Western Michigan and as defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, Texas, Florida, Texas A&M, Wake and Kansas State.

Darnell was hired as the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M University by head coach Dennis Franchione for the 2006 season. Franchione had previously served as Darnell's offensive coordinator at Tennessee Tech in 1983 and 1984. Inheriting a team that finished 107th in total defense and 97th in scoring defense, Darnell implemented a quick turnaround, with the 2006 team finishing 37th in total defense and 32nd in scoring defense. A day after head coach Dennis Franchione resigned, A&M athletic director Bill Byrne named Darnell the interim head coach. Darnell coached the Aggies in the 2007 Alamo Bowl, which was Darnell's 12th bowl to coach.

bringing in a guy that has been out of the business since 2007?

He had ~27 years of experience before that, I doubt he's rusty.

Brian Kelly coached against this guy at Western Michigan. I'm sure he knows him very well and obviously well enough to put him on his staff.

Was he running a bed and breakfast in Idaho the past few years too? If Al davis were still alive, he'd be all over him.

hmmmm.... Darnell had three different "careers" at WMU while I was there: a]. four extremely good years where we were very solid and competitive every time; b] three years of mediocrity but where it was hard to say why; c]. one year when it appeared that he just ran out of energy and didn't function at all.

I have no right to a strong opinion, but this would seem odd as a hire to me, as Darnell is an older and tireder Bob Diaco --- a linebackers coach and DC by trade.

Looks like both Gary Darnell and Bobby Elliot will be joining the staff.

Notre Dame: There are reports that Iowa State defensive backs coach Bobby Elliott is leaving to join the staff at Notre Dame. Sources tell us the same...and (as we mentioned this morning) we hear that Gary Darnell will join him coaching the safeties.

apparently it is all 3

Notre Dame: We hear it's not a done deal, but Brian Kelly has had significant discussions with Tennessee offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. Could happen today or tomorrow.

I understand what you mean, but big names mean big expectations....

I'd rather have an up and comer with a world of potential than a big dollar name

How can it be all 3? With the 9 assistant coach limit, which one of the 7 existing coaches would be let go?

Martin (just became OC)
Alford (best recruiter; or in top 2)
Denbrock
Booker (just hired)
Diaco (just became Asst HC)
Cooks (just became Co-DC)
Elston

I suspect that FootballScoop heard about Darnell and Elliott and assumed both, when it was more likely one or the other.

From NBC's Keith Arnold: Elliot set to finalize Irish coaching staff.

Elliott has a good reputation as a recruiter, did plenty to help resuscitate Iowa State’s secondary (as evidence in the Cyclone’s upset of No. 2 Oklahoma State) and shares the same defensive philosophies that Diaco and Cooks will implement, likely because he taught those same principles to them when he coached them. In terms of fit, it appears the hire is a home run.

Replied on this earlier but for some reason it never showed-up:

I don't see how it could be all 3; there is a limit of 9 Asst Coaches; ND currently has 7 (Diaco; Martin; Alford; Denbrock; Cooks; Elston; Booker). Which of them wouldn't be in the picture anymore?

I'd guess Booker...

Pure speculation though
