What the ****?

Honestly how can you be a Notre Dame supporter with ideas like that?

Look at my sign up date. Yea, I'm a fair weather fan. I'm not a real fan. I'm just a nobody poster who always posts negative stuff.

It was a bit of a joke. But there is some truth to it. How many times did ND win head to head recruiting battles against Urban Meyer? How many recruits were committed to ND publicly but suddenly switched on or close to signing day without the ND staff knowing? What did ND's staff do about it when they got poached?

Some of you newbies are too thin skinned.

Two: Lost Molnar, Hinton, Warriner, promoted Scott Booker up.

Isn't being 2 coaches short this time of year bad?

Meanwhile Meyer has a coaching staff to coach the team and another to recruit. BK needs to show that this isn't a big deal and that he was prepared for this situation by having 2 good hires already lined up. With the rumours that had been going around I hope he had a contingency plan.

My biggest concern with all of this is that less than a week ago BK announced that his whole staff would be returning, and how that was important to the program's success. Before worrying too much about a new recruiting rival, I want to make sure that our own house is completely in order. Was BK really that out of touch with what was going on/going to happen?

Are you being serious? Just because he tells the media that everything is fine doesn't mean he was unaware that this could happen. Maybe he was trying to prevent a circus. Maybe he was making an effort behind the scenes to entice them to stay and didn't want to undermine that effort publicly. Who knows WHY he lied to the media. Us knowing would defeat the purpose of him doing so. I'm pretty confident that if we were hearing the Hinton rumors here, Kelly heard them too and addressed it with his staff.

I really don't get some people right now. Two coaches left and it doesn't seem it was a mutual decision. ZERO recruits have left and none appear they are going to do so. We still Chuck Martin, Kerry Cooks, Bob Diaco, and TONY ALFORD! They key components to our class. This may help us to keep Chuck Martin with this promotion to OC.

And people kept saying Hinton was unlikely to go anywhere. No one even thought Warriner was leaving. Then, surprise, not one but two coaches leaving for lateral position transfers to the one coach who was ND's daddy for far too many years.

But nevermind that this is exactly what Urban Meyer has been doing to ND with recruits going back to 2006. I mean, somenone like me wouldn't know anything about that.

Thank goodness we've got you Johnny-come-latelys to try and bring us old-timers back to reality.

Hopey-changey? Nope, same ole thing.

In case you missed it, Charlie Weis isnt our head coach anymore. You're right, Charlie would have lost both Tuitt and Lynch last year (if he could have had them to begin with). Brian Kelly is not Charlier Weis. Brian Kelly is not the little nerd who got in one sucker punch while being pummeled by the bully. Brian Kelly is the little Irish guy in the bar who might not look like much, but he's going to fight you until he can't fight anymore, and then he's going to fight you some more...and when it's over, regardless of who wins or loses you are going to know you were in one helluva fight with a tough SOB.

We might not always agree with his decisions, he may come off arrogant at times...he may say one too many things tongue in cheek...he may do a lot of things wrong...but the guy can recruit, and the guy can coach. Our team this year was 500 x's tougher and more physical than they have been in a long time. Hell we would be in a BCS game this week if we had a QB (something that won't be an issue for much longer).

The promotion of Chuck Martin to OC is a great move for several reasons. #1, it likely increases his salary, and while it may be one step closer to him becoming a HC in a BCS conference, it could also give him the status and comfort on the staff to hang around for a while. #2 His track record shows he is a pretty damn good OC, and although Coach Kelly is a huge part of the offense and playcalling, the relationship and chemistry with him and Martin is only going to help matters.

Loss of Hinton. No big deal as it was expected.

Loss of Warinner. Big Loss! Not getting the OC job basically pushed him out. The OL played exceptionally well throughout the season.

Naming Chuck Martin as the OC makes no sense. If someone knows something about Martin that I am not aware of, please enlighten me. He has been a defensive coach all his career. What is his offensive background? I don't believe he has one?

I am at a loss at Kelly naming Chuck Martin as OC. It just doesn't make sense.

It will be very difficult to replace Warinner.

I'm not a newbie when it comes to ND football, as I saw my first game in 1965 sitting in the Monogram section because my Dad wore the Gold helmet and started on a NC team. I don't care what your history is. What you posted was troll like. You were snidely taunting and attacking Notre Dame. If you said it to me in person, I'd knock you out.

Its not like Urban swopped in and took Alford! He got a long-time Ohio guy and a coach who moved on after getting passed over. If you think Warnnier should have been the OC, then disagree with Kelly, but lets not act like Meyer pulled some huge coup.

Seems like Warinner leaving was a direct result of him not getting the promotion to OC. I think it was likely an either/or between him and Martin... whoever you didn't promote was likely gone.

So I guess it shouldn't be as surprising as it is... but damn, I really hope this doesn't have an effect on Stanley, Decker or Mahone. I don't think I can see Mahone or Stanley budging, but I could totally see Decker making a move...

Remember this telling quote from Decker a couple weeks ago: "I'm 99% committed to Notre Dame barring something drastic like a coaching change." Hopefully Ohio State takes Jordan Diamond and that is that.

Yes, I'm aware that Charlie Weis is no longer ND's coach. But what you guys do not understand about Urban Meyer is his ability to negatively recruit ND because of his former relationship with ND.

Look, there's nothing special about my knowledge. Go back and read the archives on this very site. Go back and read the facts posted by reputable and a majority of the posters on this very site. I'm not making this stuff up.

As far as the "once Kelly gets his QB", he had two and failed miserably with them. He had the #2 pro-style QB ranked #26 overall in his year, and he yanked him after 1/2 of football because he rolled his eyes at him? Then there is the 4-star, #237 overal ranked QB (Hendrix) that Urban Meyer wanted to poach in 2010 (Brian won that recruiting battle; see, I can acknowledge accomlishment when it occurrs) that Brian played musical QBs with in deference to a turnover machine.

Both of those guys were far more highly rated than anyone Brian has worked with before. Its possible the problem was Molnar, not Brian. I guess we'll see.

Edit: and you're right, they have shown the willingness to put in the time on the recruiting trail and have landed significant recruits on the defensive side of the ball. See, more credit when it's due.

I think you're right Lax. He was the OC at Kansas and did great things with their spread offense. It was a matter of time before we lost one of Warriner or Martin. It's a tough loss, given how well our line played the past two years. Hopefully we get a good replacement. Any word of options? Sorry I just woke up.

Will not happen, but Raheem Morris as DB coach i think would be pretty great. If he were to take any college job id have to imagine it would be HC tho.

ND just increased their staffs salaries and gave them contract extensions. I think ND is finally realizing that most big programs have done so, and the staff has needed a salary bump for a while now. Kelly needs a big name assistant to add with Booker. I don't know who or what the options are at the moment though.

You are wrong about Martin. He took over for Kelly at GVSU, and ran the same offense possibly even better than Kelly did.

This is ******. No other way to put it. Feel like I was sucker punched by Meyer this morning.

I don't want to overly dramatic, but these hires may define BK in the short term. Finding a new recruiting coordinator and line coach will be important.
No respect anymore from me towards Meyer. He's a bad act and losing these two coaches is a big negative. I like what Wariner has done. This has been a great o-line. Meyer comes off as a cut your throat no holds barred opportunist who I wouldnt trust anymore than a used car salesman.

Yes, I was serious. If I remember correctly, BK made these comments on the eve of our bowl game. Why say anything at all if he knew these moves were coming? Given the timing, he easily could have deflected the question by focusing on the next day's game. To me, he racheted up the importance of the comment not just by saying that the staff would be kept intact, but by emphasizing the importance of staff continuity to the program's future success. Just my opinion...

Another spin to this could be, Maybe Kelly thought his Offense wasn't performing up to his expectations so a change was inevitable.

Could be the reason guys were let go or bypassed for promotions.
With a coaching staff theirs always other options and up and coming young coaches.

I think O$U is officially our #1 recruiting rival. Urban Meyer is going to be tough to beat

Not true. Meyer is going to get the kids that have always wanted to go to OSU. Nothing will change with that at all. Those kids are die-hard OSU fans from die-hard OSU families. We NEVER get those kids. Tressel had top 5 classes all the time. We still got our kids as well.

Kids that go to ND are for the most part different than kids that go to OSU. What will happen is that we might go head to head with a couple of kids vs. Meyer, and that's it. Does that make OSU our #1 recruiting rival? Hardly. Fact is, we'll compete against USC and Michigan for FAR more recruits than OSU.

Meyer's hiring hurts UM far worse than it hurts ND (except for the coaching defections).

How many times did ND win head to head recruiting battles against Urban Meyer? How many recruits were committed to ND publicly but suddenly switched on or close to signing day without the ND staff knowing? What did ND's staff do about it when they got poached?

They got the famous 2 recruits from ND that left CW with his pants down. We lost some recruits that we wanted that chose to go there (guys like Josh Shaw). We also beat them for several recruits that had offers from UF, guys like Sam Young and Armando Allen and Zeke Motta.

And as has been said, this isn't CW's staff. This staff is relentless and stays after committed recruits, whether they are committed to ND or other schools. This staff has shown that they can recruit, even against Urban Liar. Your post above doesn't equate with this argument because CW is gone. What he did means nothing to this staff...

What this choice tells me is that Kelly was more worried of losing Martin than Warinner. Why? I think Diaco is doing a good job. Is there something we don't know.

Warinner seemed like a no brainer pick to be the OC. He had success in Kansas! If you can have success in Kansas, you can succeed anywhere.

I never said ND lost every head to head battle. Nor did I say that we never got someone Meyer wanted. I even pointed to one specific instance (Hendrix) where Meyer was not able to poach from Brian Kelly.

Given Meyer and his history and his knowledge of Notre Dame, Meyer will continue to be a thorn in Notre Dame's side. So his history is absolutely relevant to the discussion. Brian just received a shot across his bow from the man who made Charlie Weis his recruting boy. It doesn't have to be the same. But that depends on Brian Kelly.

Your claim that I'm wrongfully equating Meyer vs CW with Meyer vs Kelly is also ironic, since you equate Kelly and them turning around Lynch and Tuitt to proof of what this staff might do up against Meyer. Lynch and Tuitt didn't decommit and commit to Meyer. We don't know what the outcome would have been if Lynch and Tuitt committed to Meyer if he were coaching at the time.

1. Martin ran the offense at GVSU and took the program to even higher heights than Kelly did. Kelly is very comfortable with him at OC.

2. Let's dispell this myth about Warriner being an incredible OC. Mangini at Kansas ran everything there. That was his baby, not Warriner's. Remember, Mangini was behind the offensive success at OK under Stoops. Warriner called plays for ONE year under Mangini (in which he did a very good job, no doubt). Warriner as a slam dunk for OC is a bit of a stretch IMO.

But I'm NOT happy to see him go though. He did a great job with the O-line. I can see why he left, having been passed over. Hopefully BK gets another good O-line coach (he's done a fantastic job with his staff so far - people were ripping his hires and for the most part they've been great hires. I trust hm with this)...

For all practical purposes, Kelly is the offensive coordinator. He also calls the plays.

I agree with SoCal Domer that Meyer will be a thorn in everyone's side. He has a very charismatic presence which allows him to do whatever it takes to win while presenting himself as someone above the fray. He also has an incredible record and a couple of NCs.

But I also think that most of the kids he will recruit are not your historic ND leans. He'll get some of those, no doubt, but not all. It is just really, really hard to sell OSU as ND, though he'll try.

I like Warnnier, but I think Martin is a special coach. I'd chose him between the two.

Yes i get that. But it isn't like he can do it all. You still need very good assistants to make it work.

Take my job for example. Lets just say i am responsible for a large group of workers and we have one goal or task to fulfill, since i am in charge i "call the plays" but if theres someone on my staff that isn't in the flow of things i find it hard to promote or even keep them on board. Catch my drift now?

I believe this has a great deal with what happened.

Finally some rational thought. Ask Mack Brown at Texas and even Meyer when he was at Florida how hard it is and how much it sucks when you lose great assistants to promotions at other schools.
