Wazzu was pretty good considered how much they’ve been gutted for multiple years over and over again. One possession losses to UVA, Ole Miss and JMU. Lost to North Texas and then the Apple Cup. Schedule was unintentionally hard. Beat Toledo and SDSU.

Rogers gutted South Dakota State when he left. A decent number of players and the entire staff followed him to Washington State for him to only last a year there.

Now they can all move back closer to home.

He seems like a good coach. Wazzu is a total dead end job and he did pretty well there in the one year (6-6 with one-score losses on the road to Ole Miss, UVA and James Madison). On top of all the success at SDSU. Was a little surprised not to have heard his name for more jobs this cycle, TBH.
If Iowa State is willing/able to invest, I'd keep an eye on them.

Man, people take this stuff too personally. It's business. The personalities of the coaches doesn't matter as much as the financial bottom line. You can't really evaluate Knowles decision without knowing the specifics of the competing contract offers.

For example PSU could have offered more money and a fully guaranteed 4yr contract with no offset. ND may have offered 3yrs with an offset.

The PSU offer would be better because Knowles won't be unemployed for long and since there is no offset he'd be getting paid twice.

Knowles is also a Philly guy and I’m pretty sure his wife is from the area too

I think his departure from OSU is the correct sore spot to poke at, him turning down ND is just business.

Yeah, I don't care if a coach decides not to coach here. Knowles' defense famously takes about two years to master so I'm not sure him coming here would have really made a difference to us this year anyways.

Yeah, I get that, a number of posters mention this off and on. I take 'it's business' to mean more financial reward. But this isn't a coach moving from DII to the MAC, or AAC to a P4 position. Proven guys already at this level are making a good buck. Not all moves are like LSU dropping a major bag on BK. Heck, Ole Miss matched LSU's offer, Lane still left. Was that just 'it's business'? Al Golden left ND for the Bengals. Was that a better long term business move for him financially? Doubt it. Knowles was leaving OSU. I doubt OSU was underpaying him that much relative to the market. He wanted something else....respect, more control, get away from Day, change of scenery, closer to home, whatever. I doubt that ND's financial offer was really all that different. It was doubtful the decision was purely financial. He made the conscious choice that working for James Franklin and PSU was a better place to be. He chose poorly.

That may be true, but at the time Al Golden left, and your choices are Knowles or Chris Ash, you are saying you wouldn't have cared whom Notre Dame hired? You must be new here. ;)

Oh, for sure I wanted Knowles, but I don't hold that personally against him for going to PSU. I was very underwhelmed by the Ash hire and the first two games didn't endear him to me, but with the benefit of perspective now it looks like it all worked out anyways.

IIRC, his partner (I don't think they were married at the time) was from Oklahoma, which is why the Oklahoma State job was in consideration.

So once it was obvious he was leaving Ohio State, he had the choice of going closer to his home, to his partner's home, or Notre Dame. Pretty easy to see why we weren't the pick.

He was also the DC at Oklahoma State prior to Ohio State
