I don't think Tom Herman would be what OU wants. Herman should be an HC in college again, but probably at a job that falls in between Texas and UH somewhere.

That said, if all LSU could do is hire Herman in the end, the irony would be absolutely beautiful on so many levels.

If DeBoer is going to Washington, Herman could do a lot worse than Fresno State.

The difference is that Nebraska left the Big 12, and their presence in Texas, for the midwest where talent is arguably less plentiful and logistics may be more problematic. The Sooners are actually putting themselves in a position to play more games where there is a greater concentration of talent and they are not completely abandoning their presence in Texas. Not sure how they align the SEC going forward but there's a strong chance they'll play a game in Texas at least once a year after the change. They may still have the same issues as NE with logistics but they will have a greater presence in the most talent rich states in the nation.

There's still a chance this move backfires but it may be for different reasons than Nebraska.

Maybe the proximity to talent eases the transition for them. My assumption is that the increased competition for that talent and the tougher SoS they'll be facing will more than wipe out whatever advantage the proximity gives them.

Cards on the table here: I think UT and OU bolting for the SEC is one of the greediest and most short-sighted moves I've witnessed in CFB (which is saying something), so I'm rooting for All The Bad Things™ to happen to them. Such hubris must be punished.

Venables to OU picking up steam.

Forgot him in my initial list lol. Must be the one he was always waiting on. Makes sense entering the SEC

Yeah, I think this would be a great hire for OU if they can pull it off, especially entering the SEC. My OU buddy reminded me last night that he has strong Sooner ties having coached there from ‘99 to 2011.

This would be a great hire and a huge blow to Clemson. I'm all for it.

Just the blow to Clemson is enough for me to like this.

I'm torn on this. Yes, Clemson has ascended to the top tier in recent years, and therefore is a stumbling block to our playoff ambitions. But of those teams, they're also the closest to us in BCR, and the team we'll see the most regularly via our ACC agreement. So while I'd love to see Venables' departure take them down a few notches, I don't really want to see them bottom out like USC has. As we're experiencing right now, if your rivals start to suck too badly, a lack of signature wins can bite you in the ass.

But at the same time, win and you're in. Right? People can bitch about ND beating a "down" Clemson til they're blue in the face, but so long as this team takes care of business -- and this team now officially TAKES CARE OF BUSINESS a la always winning the games they SHOULD -- they're in. Just look at Cincinnati. Their schedule is a joke, yet win and they're in.

Tl;DR: Good luck keeping an undefeated ND out of the playoff. A "down" Clemson makes being undefeated easier.

I agree, they will have some challenges that may be too difficult to overcome. I'm not defending either program b/c greed is playing a huge role here but it sure seems like outside forces have played a role in dismantling the conference, starting with CO and NE. Internally, I'd bet TX and OK would prefer playing in a pre-2010 BIG 12 over moving to the SEC, and maybe they just see this move (or something similar to this) as inevitable so they may as well start cashing checks sooner rather than later.

Counterpoint- if USC was top 8 this year and we beat them, maybe we’re in with a loss. I much prefer to leave no doubt by beating good teams rather than beating shitty teams (like this year) and being at the mercy of the committee and teams ahead in the rankings.

Someone else will emerge from the ACC if Clemson is brought down a few pegs. FSU showed some signs of life this year and they may have a pulse moving forward. If Miami lands Kiffin or Mario and are willing to spend as much money as is rumored, you have to assume they will be better moving forward too.

Heard the writer for the Oklahoman newspaper earlier today. Been covering OU for a long time. Said Venables as OU's next HC is a strong possibility. Also said in his opinion, Riley left because he was against joining the SEC. Tells me Riley knew he couldn't win with all O and no D.

Counterpoint - Whose fault is it that Wiscy, UNC, UVA and VT crapped the bed this year? All three were supposed to be fairly decent this year.

Also the funny thing is NDs SOS ranks high this and most years. This is probably because there are no FCS teams dragging it down. But there is also no signature win and that seems to matter most for perception. You have to show you can hang with the big boys. We had one chance this year and blew it (if you consider Cincy big boys this year)

To be fair, the 5 game stretch between 9/25 and 10/30 (UW, Cinci, VT, USC, UNC) looked like a Murderer's Row preseason. We had no way to know 4/5 of those teams would be down this year when the schedule was set.

Bleacher Report
@BleacherRepor
BREAKING: Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables has verbally agreed to become the next head coach at the University of Oklahoma. DJ Uiagalelei and numerous players are expected to join him in Norman.

I don't necessarily trust it but...

The "numerous players expected to join him" is the alarming part of this era of free agency

Well Jake Venables is probably one of them haha. I’d be surprised if the big dogs Breese and Murphy move. Maybe a combo of Zanders and some of the older guys Venables is close with and FR? But yeah DJ would be dumb and is fake news

OU 247 guys reporting the Venables thing and I saw a Snapchat or IG of Jake doing horns down so this has more legs than just the fake report still

Apparently the Jake Venables horns down photo is months old.
