Boy, has Sumlin's stock vanished? Seems like yesterday he was on a short list to USC, and was one of the "hot" coaches.

He seems to be following the Ty Willingham career trajectory. I really like Sumlin and was hoping he’d bounce back at AZ.

Agreed. Best hire thus far in the coaching carousel season. A-State has become a mini-cradle of coaching over the last decade.

What part of Arkansas do you live?

Northeast. Delta boy all the way.

I thought Anderson was a great guy, but he didn't recruit locally very much. I'm partial to our own but I'd love to see more engagement from ASU.

Heck I tried to get Notre Dame to recruit one of our track girls a few years ago to no avail...and now she is at ASU doing really well.

The thing about offensively minded head coaches is their schemes can get obsolete really quickly and sometimes that’s all they bring to the table. He’s a Charlie Weis.

Wow, forgot about Ty. What the hack is he doing these days...playing scratch golf?

Now seeing Lovie Smith booted at Illinois. Can anyone fix that program?

I mean, I'm not sure why anyone thought that was a good hire to begin with. They were maybe the last Big Ten program to put any money into facilities at all, and though it's a good school, it ain't NW, who's had a lot more success recently.

Illinois could be fine, but they need to hit with the right hire. They'll never consistently be top tier in the Big Ten.

Edit: somebody on reddit said that Jeff Monken is from Peoria, and that bringing the triple option would be a good idea. If he's willing to come, then yeah that's a great hire. But I'm not sure he really would, unless the U of I has the ability to pony up big bucks again.

Yup, IL is likely never to be a consistent contender. I can see them perhaps competing once every 10th blue moon or something like that. They need to invest like you said. Going gimmick with the triple option would at least add chaos. I don't think LS was a bad hire. About as good as they can expect all things considered.

Spot on my friend. Illinois is another program that should go against the grain and run triple option. They have little history, school not heavily invested, and can't recruit well.

They're like the Vandy of the big ten

Gotcha. My wife is from Wynne so I’ve spent plenty of time in that neck of the woods. Beans & rice.

Is Illinois in-state tuition more for kids vs going out-of state to say Iowa or Wisky?

Not sure I understand the question. Are you talking in general? The players of course don't pay. I'd assume like most schools, in state kids pay less in general.

Sorry for the confusion. No, not athletes...regulars students. Can’t remember where I heard it but it was that Illinois’s tuition was so high that residents of that state could pay less going out of state.

Auburn has fired Gus Malzahn

This is really the first big one IMO unless you want to call SC East a big one.

Malzahn will get picked up somewhere smaller quickly if he doesn't want to golf for a year.

Hearing Mario or Napier on Auburn. Gotta think they already have their guy since they ponied up the $21 mil on Gus.

Exactly what I was thinking since he was too expensive a few years ago when they really wanted to

Illinois's website shows the annual total cost as $32,814-$37,908, which is low. Looked at the school as an in-state applicant back in 2008 and it would have been over $37k a year. Was cheaper for me to go to a private school with scholarships. I know a lot of people who went to Iowa for less as well.

Gotcha. Not sure.

And Chad Morris was his OC, and probably could land a HC gig himself somewhere. Wonder if Auburn has someone in mind?

Any chance of Hugh Freeze, showed he knows how to beat Bama.

The problem with Freeze is that he beat Bama with lots and lots of bought players (cash, cars and hookers). He comes with a LOT of character baggage. Hiring him to coach at a Power 5 school is likely to land you, sooner or later, in NCAA jail. Word is that the folks running things at Auburn have already decided he's not worth the risk and have no interest in Freeze and the problems he brings. It's also not clear that the SEC would allow Freeze back in yet. They made it clear a couple of years ago that he wasn't eligible for hire as an assistant at that time. Freeze is talented, but he may have burned too many bridges.

Auburn is nuts if they fired Malzahn w/o his replacement lined up. Freeze is the speculation on Twitter. The SEC can’t blackball him much longer or he & his attorneys will sue their ass. IMO, he’d be smart to land a good B12 gig but the SEC was Bama & everyone else this year, so maybe the time to strike is now.

Sound like a guy you want to hang with at parties. Don't forget the blow.
