The most poorly managed coaching search I've ever seen. When they really pulled the trigger on firing Franklin I thought for sure they had a plan in place. I really overestimated their competence.

Except it makes guys like Helton hire small potatoes compared to this lol

It's an example of how you don't execute the process, that's for sure.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, you'd better have someone committed. Locked, stocked and two smoking barrels ready to come in and accept the job if you open it.

This blew up in their faces pretty hard. Seems like right now the only guy who wants it is Terry Smith. If that's the best they can end up doing, it looks pretty stupid on their part. No offense to Smith, but he pandered to the Joe Pa cult a few weeks ago and he still hasn't been hired. Maybe he doesn't care, as long as he gets it, but the optics are just really bad.

Firing Ty and ending up with Weis instead of Meyer or Stoops was bad, as we know and recall, but this levels beyond that. Not to mention it's 20 years later and this stuff is all typically done through back channels ahead of time. Penn State really screwed this all up regardless of how it turns out.

Whoever they hire at this point is screwed with how badly fumbled his whole process has been. Glad im here too see it. Couldn't of happened to a nicer bunch of assholes

True but they were always gonna be underwhelmed. From the national perspective people have been saying since Day 1 you’re likely gonna hire a coach that is worse than James Franklin

Correct. So hiring someone like Chesney wasn't going to be an option, even if they did it a month ago. It was probably the correct route to go but that ship has sailed and this is now more than ever about optics, but the optics ship has sailed too. Chesney would have been like Ohio State hiring Tressel. Different times, but that hire wasn't inspiring by any stretch. Until Tressel went to the basketball game and gave the "310 days in Ann Arbor, MI" speech at halftime.

I actually think coming away with Campbell after all of this wouldn't be terrible. They still look stupid, but it saves a tad bit of face.

The players seem to want Smith much in the way the ND players wanted Freeman. Freeman was a coordinator, which is kind of a big difference compared to Smith, but be that as it may the players want the guy who is already there. The PR optics with fans, alumni and media is something far different than that.

Terry Smith has a daughter with special needs. He could become a millionaire and have her set for life after he and his wife are gone. I'm kind of rooting for him.

Then once he were to get the job, never again root for him on the field. LOL
