Terry Smith is their only option. He is the one guy that wants the job and I doubt he'd be sour that he wasn't their first choice.

They need to get this done and back the guy. Shit Show at the Fuck Factory via one major Slapdick

In a shocking turn of events, PSU has hired British soccer coach Nathan Shelley as its new HC.

Damn, he’s a soccer coach AND the mayor of London?

Penn State is one Matt Cambell extension at Iowa State away from having to poach a guy from Lehigh or Lafayette to come to PSU.

On a real note, keeping Terry Smith for one year, hiring a new AD, suffering, and being first in line for the coaching cycle in '26 is probably the best path forward.

if Smith was the interim, you would kiss two recruiting classes goodbye and takes years to recover

They were pretty much first in line in 2025 as well.

In all seriousness why do they not simply hire Al Golden?
He's a better option than either Daboll or Smith.

I hate to say it, but probably because as a head coach...he's pretty trash.
Ok but one of their other candidates just got fired as an NFL head coach and has one year of relevant experience coaching college football, and the other looks like a lifelong assistant who hasn't set foot outside of Pennsylvania in three decades.
Golden wasn't a great head coach at/for Miami but he was pretty good at Temple and I suspect learned a fair bit while at Notre Dame.

I have doubts that Golden wants to be a HC anymore, he didn't want to recruit or do any of that kind of shit while he was the DC here and I doubt he has the stamina to want to deal with it as the man in the big chair. Especially not a dumpster fire like PSU. I get he's an alum, but he'll have options.

I think Daboll is trash too...LOL

Penn St. is in a ton of trouble unless they have a trick up their sleeve.

PS....Golden was worse at Temple than he was at Miami

I'll give a crazy hot take that probably won't go over well.....Outside of his time in South Bend, when was Al Golden even a good coach? I think he is a smart, likeable guy that was successful at ND because of ND not Al Golden. Just look at their last 5 DC's

I dunno. At the time he took the Temple job, they had been fired from the Big East for sucking so hard. That was a difficult place to win and eventually he did. The challenges to succeeding were different at Miami, probably more akin to what one would have to deal with at a job like Penn State, but also ones he might have witnessed up close at Notre Dame.
I agree he may not want to be a head coach. But if I were Penn State I'd certainly make that call and make him tell me no. Their other options at this point are just losers.

I haven't looked at his pre-ND record recently but I do recall being super underwhelmed when he was hired. I'm sure he could get another gig as DC in CFB based off of his body of work at ND if/when the Bengals clean house. How great of a coach he is overall, I can't really speak on that.

Terry Pegula is a huge PSU donor, massive, and Daboll coached in Buffalo, just in case anyone is wondering what the connection might be... He also has a whopping 4 years of college experience in his coaching career. 3 of which occurred before the year 2000. Hell recruiting isn't even the same since his stint at Bama
