Blowout victory, but we also gave up close to 400 yards and about 6 yards per play.

Defense did markedly improve in the 2H.

Tell me how to feel.

I think the best case for us is Ash gets the defense functional and we go on a deep run and Ash lands an NFL gig or a lower level HC job or something.

Maybe his defense takes time to learn? If he has them rolling by midseason we should hope he stays for the continuity.

The secondary looks better with Tae Johnson and Devonta Smith than Jalen Stroman and Karson Hobbs.

Interesting.

I love Bowen but in obvious situations he’s next shoe to drop. He can’t cover.

Good but not great showing for the defense in the past 6 quarters. Once we get Moore back, we'll see what we think.

Only problem is I'm not sure were even going to play anyone decent the rest of the year(except maybe usc). So he could look solid but maybe still kinda suck.

I’m fine if this is a bend don’t break defense that slowly improves through the rest of the season. While still not an acceptable drop off, it may not matter with this offense/schedule if we keep putting up 650 yards

Arkansas entered the game one of the top rated offenses in the country

You even predicted them to score more than Purdue
and with how Chris has coached the defense it wasn’t an off base prediction & I wasn’t the only one. I am a natural pessimist & yes I definitely go to the extremes on the board but let’s keep some perspective and make sure this is legit sustainable improvement of the defense & not just a good game and a half against weak opponents. I don’t find that to be unfair at all.

I don’t think acting like the Arkansas offense is good prior to the game and weak after the game is pessimism.

I mean if he really gets it rolling and we become a top 10-15 unit, sure. But if it's more of we go from awful to just non-liability then I would rather let him seek other opportunities.

But, I'll just enjoy the win and hope for progress. He is, for better or worse, a key piece of our team so I want him to figure it out and get us rolling.

The defense played much better especially as the game went on. Multiple adjustments were made throughout the game to counteract what petrino was doing. Seemed to simplify what was going on. Pressure packages more similar to last year as well. Even when in zone it was more attacking

I think prior to the game it was a fair assessment that Arkansas was a team like us. High powered offense weak defense. It wasn’t unfair to think it could’ve been an offensive shoot out. Ash to his credit prepared the defense extremely well for this game and it showed. I am not faulting anyone for having hope that maybe he’s turned a corner. On the flip side there have been many times throughout my life in following the Irish that one great game turned out to be fools gold. It was 20 years ago but I remember thinking Charlie Weis was the savior after beating mediocre Pitt and Michigan teams, coming close to beating USC, & losing handily to OSU in a bowl, the. Following up that season with loses to the only good teams we played. I remember thinking BVG was going to make us have an elite Defense with Golson back under center & that didn’t work out. I don’t think I’m being off base or unfair in waiting to see where the season goes before completely flipping my opinion on Ash. Not saying you’re in the wrong if you disagree it I think I’m being more well rounded than normal trying to keep things in perspective with so much work left to do & so many other big games against potentially better teams left to play

We are reacting to one game, so we just shouldn’t take anything away from this performance? Yeah sure I’d love for it to be sustainable but…we’re reacting to today.

That’s fair. I don’t feel like you’re doing anything wrong going that route. I’m just not like that. By the end of the season if he helps us make another deep playoff run I might sing his praises but until that happens I’m just going to keep thinking good job today, let’s see what the rest of the season brings before I get excited.

Almost rather have another safety than Bowen or more Farimo and Asa

Bowen’s great against the run and a fine blitzer but such a liability in pass coverage. There’s got to be a middle ground there. Maybe it’s Asa with Faraimo or Sneed playing more in his spot. On 50-50 run/pass situations.
