Changes to Kickoff Rules

The rule change in the NFL did produce way way more touchbacks but I don't know if it necessarily reduced the number of kickoffs returned for TD's. It can almost be a benefit to the return team in that the coverage can run past the returner, in other words, instead of having to get through a couple waves of coverage it may be just beat one wave and gone.

I would also imagine that with Brindza's leg we will be putting a lot of teams at the 25 yard line to start their drives.

Thats stupid as hell IMO.

if my calculations are correct return TDs went up from 13 to 20 last year which is actually kind of surprising. I hate the move up to the 25 tho

Yeah, it's almost to the point of why even have kickoffs, huh? Just after a score, let the other team automatically start from their own 25 yd. line and save the time consumed for teams lining up just to kickg it deep into or thru the end zone. Other than going for an on-side kick, it's taking all the potential "excitement" out of kickoff returns.

As if being on defense wasn't hard enough during this era of football. Lets just play overtime rules all the time. Start on the thirty.

I guess nobody thought that when your opponent starts on the 25 vs. 20, you're less inclined to kick it in the end zone...

Kickoff still provides the opportunity of creating a fumble or a dummy returner bringing it out of the back of the endzone and tackling him on the 10.

This even more supports the point I was trying to make. There may be more touchbacks but they opportunity for a big play is greater as well.

This. You're going to start seeing pop up kicks targetted inside the 5. Also, teams who have a GAIII are still going to return every single kick.

It also reads in there that if a player loses their helmet, from a non penalty (facemask), they must sit out the next play.

This isn't nearly as bad as the year they tried to run the clock before first down after change of possessions. That was beyond absurd.

Well do these new rules help or hurt Notre Dame?

I'm thinking it hurts us. Without GAIII's return TD against Michigan St., we probably would not have won that game.
