Leaving one of the most secure HCs in the country to consider OU or USC is an either moronic or genius negotiation

Probably gotta a big offer from OU too

He does not report to Riley at USC he reports to the AD apparently and if Riley gets canned it won’t affect Bowdens job security

It's nice to say, but what if the new HC wants to bring in his own GM? Elite coaches carry all the power. This isn't the NFL and Bowden is 100% at the whim of the next coach, not the AD.

Meh nobody really knows what a GM is yet tbh it’s not like every top HC has a guy yet they’d want to bring with them. Maybe in future but not at present

A buddy of mine who’s an SC alum was trying to convince me that $1MM is the going rate for a GM now. Does that actually sound right?

I hear ya, but every top HC doesn't bring everything with him, yet more often than not clears out mostly everyone from the old staff. Let alone a guy that is pulling in 1M a year. In many cases, that could be the highest paid person outside the HC and coordinators. That will be pretty attractive for a new HC to have to play with.

That isn’t accurate from what I’ve read. Less than a handful got raises in the 750K range. Bowden is reported to be the highest paid.

There are a few SEC GMs around the 1M range.

Bowden has set the bar, but give it a year or two, he will have company at that number

Brice said yesterday in the pod that top schools are paying in the ballpark of $1M now for GMs

$1M for a GM seems crazy at first, but when viewed brought the lens of the position effectively being an off-field coordinator, it makes more sense. Some are worth it, some are not.

I think it all depends on your candidate pool. If you are trying to hire a former or current NFL GM or assistant GM, then the number needs to be a million or more.

However, paying Bowden that much was asinine, don't know what USC was thinking.

Bowden was a recruiting guru (who may be losing a step) that simply got the role of GM as means for a payday bump.

I don't want someone there because of a title change. I want the best. Give me Bill Pollian.

They're thinking they haven't finished in the Top 5 since 2016 and haven't sniffed a title since 2008.

As a general rule I don't think any player or position is being overpaid in college football. Everything that seems expensive now will be a steal 5 years from now. The ROI and long term program branding upon winning in the playoffs is so great, any money thrown into it now is a great deal.

You still need luck, health, and good coaching to win (some hero will point out the exception here). But there's a financial floor now that you need to meet in order to get in the door. And I don't know if ND is meeting that floor.

Holy smokes

We were just in the natty

We lost Al golden and Chad b

We had to PAY our players so we didn’t lost j love. JD price. L Moore. C gray. The list goes on and on

How can you say we aren’t meeting the floor?

One of you sports finances dorks (affectionate) enthrall me with your acumen: how do the operating revenues of a blue blood college football team and an NFL franchise compare?

Because I trust John Brice and he's said repeatedly our NIL is half of what the top programs are. I don't want to get into a pissing match over who speculated what on numbers we can't see, but I listen to John Brice a lot and I personally trust him more than others who speculate on the topic. And he says it with conviction.

The $7 versus $10 versus $15 seems to be a disagreement on when that number is tallied, as several players received bumps throughout the year

I also think outside sponsorships that ND arranges are not being included in Brice’s number. So total compensation ND players receive ≠ total payment by ND.

Whatever the number ND paid to get to the national championship, clearly it exceeds the floor, considering well, they were in the national championship
Does this apply to TCU and Washington too? I think ND vastly overachieved this year (which is awesome). But the depth and top talent obviously isn't there yet.

I don't want 2024 to be an anomaly and every CFB champion from here on out, would be shocking if they're not a top ~8 NIL program.

That’s being intentionally reductive when you consider what one or two years has done to the CFP landscape and the seasons each team had.

Man, if you can't see the difference in talent, coaching, program prestige, etc. between ND and MFing TCU than you are extremely pessimistic. I mean look at our comparative paths to the national title game. TCU beat Michigan and then got genocided in the title game. They were more equivalent to a SMU or ASU, but lucked out drawing Michigan and was able to pick up on Michigan's sign stealing scheme and caught them flat footed.

I was told by a very good source that Love was offered a very hefty NIL deal from Oregon this season. Other key players were receiving offers as well.
Considering Oregon did the same for Jeremiah Smith and Carnel Tate, seems like they were just throwing out offers to every elite player in the country via DM lol

Jaylen Sneed and Jadarian Price staying is really all you need to know about ND's NIL status for current players.
I don't understand the angst people have over the fact we're not paying millions of dollars for high school kids. It would be one thing if we weren't doing any NIL, but with the amount of talent we retain year over year, we're clearly doing something.
