I don't think we should get too anvious about recruits. Although we are down to 17, the quality is about at number 7 among all schools.
We have some serious speed on the way with 3 DBs and two athlete/DB/receiver types that havan average 40 time of 4.46. The slow 'kid' runs a 4.5 40.

That would leave me rather concerned about our secondary. It's already the weakest part of the defense, and if that's how we close then we haven't addressed that problem at all. Are we done with Lyons for sure?

I understand your concern but we aren't in the mix for a lot of DBs left on the board. As TT pointed out, we have done pretty well thus far in the defensive backfield. We dont have a lot of options left. Quincy Aldridge is not really being recruited anymore by ND and Lyons has cooled on ND a lot.

We have 4 DBs committed right now. Eilar Hardy, Josh Atkinson, Matthias Farley, Jalen Brown.

We will still have plenty on the roster today:

CB: Lo Wood, Robert Blanton, EJ Banks (Maybe)

S: Jamoris Slaughter, Harrison Smith, Dan McCarthy, & Zeke Motta

Those are all three stars, while we have a bunch of four stars throughout the rest of the recruiting class. I don't think it's controversial to say that this would be the weak part of the class.

There's a reason why these kids were offered a scholarship by the staff. Once on campus, star ratings doesn't matter anymore. It's what you do to develop them into championship level players that count.

If you break down those four DBs, you can really feel good about all of them.
-Eilar Hardy is very versatile, and from what we hear one of the best player in Ohio.
-Farley was a star last year with awesome speed and only played one year of football.
-Atkinson is very good. His brother might be better right now, but from what his dad said Josh will catch up with him.
-Jalen Brown is very solid in space. How many 3 stars from Texas pans out to be great players. A lot.

Good point..., and if I am not mistaken, I thought Eilar Hardy was listed as a 4 star on one of the recruiting sources.

do we have any chance at getting ray drew he would be a huge addition

A chance? Yes, but it's not likely. If we get him on campus for a visit then it becomes more of an option. He is good friends with Stephon Tuitt and now with the loss of Lynch and Burton, we have room. An OV is crutial if we want to pull this kid out of the southeast.

My guess: Georgia Bulldog

No it's not. (amazing)

It is about in line. There was a whole lot of feed me going on, (ego), and a whole lot less sincerety. Maybe everyone thought things were on the up and up, but go back and look at everything.

You know something? What if they found an academic issue, like with Justin Utopo, only not able to be as easily remedied, and what if he retook the ACT or SAT and the results were no better and the grades or transcripts were not there? It actually could be a whole lot of things.

How is Badger's speed?

Have you watch film of Hardy (or any of the db's for that matter) from the 7 on 7 competitions this summer? Not if you aren't ecstatic about them!

I remember Badger reminding me of Zibby, not afraid to hit and might not have a blazing 40 time but quick to the ball on the field.

Recruiting is a tough business but somehow they must determine who is using them and who is earnest about playing at Notre Dame. I'd rather see them go after overachievers and not the guys that seem to be playing the game. I understand you cant cut a guy off just because he is a 5 star guy but those players are really just looking for the best deal. Nothing wrong with that but they aren't the backbone of a program. The 2/3 star guys that grow into the body of the team is what Notre Dame has been lacking. Case in point Rocky Blier, he wanted to go to Wisconsin but changed his mind. Many of Lou's linbackers were this type of player. I'd like to see Notre Dame steer clear of these guys until the program gets back on its feet because all it does is draw negative if the kids back out. When Notre Dame wins they'll line up to get to South Bend. Untill then I like the idea of closing the ranks and going for people that Kelly will develope. If a 4/5 star guys expresses interest go after him but I would decide very early on in the process who is serious and who is a user. Dont tell me Notre Dame then uses them--they are getting a great ticket for the rest of their life--its called being a Notre Dame man.

Possibly irrelevant point: The only way to better ensure your choice of a recruit character-wise [and talent-wise for that matter] is to depend upon your relationship with the recruit's coach or some similar up-close-and-knowledgeable adult who has known the kid for awhile. Notre Dame is a national-wide recruiting team, and it is a little more difficult to establish those long-term relationships when you don't concentrate heavily on just a few deep areas.[For instance, I was told that Virginia Tech never offers anyone from a program that they don't know the coach well]. It's even more difficult when you're changing coaches every few years.
I believe that as long as Kelly has to build relationships with high school coaches in widespread areas of the country, we will see "surprises" in terms of athlete character, personality, dependability. The Alabamas, LSUs, Floridas, USCs don't worry about this, as they just gobble up 5 & 4 stars all over, and if one doesn't fit they insert another. We might have been able to do that with our "aura" and our pipelines in the old days, but now that has to be re-built.
Kelly is correctly not asking for my opinion, but my advice would be to concentrate on a few areas to efficiently build these relationships. He has one ready made one already--Cincinnati, with Moeller, St. X, et al, and that area is loaded with talent. You would think that Chicago would be another "mine". Something must remain of our southern California connections, and we need to establish something in the speed centers of Florida and Georgia.
I think that i've seen in Kelly's current recruiting that he is trying to do exactly this, and even penetrate Texas. But is any football staff large enough to "work" North Carolina, New Jersey, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, etc, etc, etc...?? It would be great if the ND alumni would organize a nation-wide support group which "insinuated" themselves into every HS football program that they could, even when no ND-level athlete was playing there, and "cultivated" the area for any possible recruit who would arise. It would have to be non-ND-affiliated but with our national coverage, especially in the urban Catholic school systems, this "insider" presence might tip the scales in directing more high-quality physical and character athletes towards ND. It is a pipedream I have.
