Is it just me, or does there seem to be an unrealistic abundance of injured players this year? I think I remember somebody posting that ND is down to 51 scholarship players on the team now...that is utterly insane. What is it with the injuries? Is it just a coincidence that the injuries also started getting out of hand during the Navy game?

Every fucking year it's the same shit. Stanford, in their run of awesomeness, never lost more than 1 or 2 starters a year. How? Some people point to their (alleged) juicing but that's also just absurd luck.

Last year we got decimated by injuries too. Tuitt, Day, and Nix all got hurt. At one point in the Pitt game Carlo-freaking-Calabrese was lining up at DT. And that's not even talking about losing key players like Spond, etc. at other positions or Golson to suspension.

Even in 2012, we lost Slaughter and Lo Wood and had to roll out Farley + a true-frosh-RB at Corner... Shumate was our freaking slot corner lol. Remember when Cam McDaniel got first shot at CB over KVR?

At some point this crap just has to stop. The attrition is absurd relative to other programs... counting suspensions... top 3 DTs out, top DE out, two of top 3 CBs out, top four (sorta/not really) safeties out for stretches or otherwise hampered, top MIKE out... I mean what the fuck????

Shumate played great in the slot. IMO he looks worse as a junior safety than he did as a true freshman slot corner.

It does seem as though we have had more injuries than most programs. I know it is not a popular opinion but steroids are a huge part of college football. I know a few players that played at major Universities and have a friend that was an assistant strength coach at Baylor, and have heard from them that there are most likely multiple players juicing. Some of the players I know have even stated that the testing process is basically rigged to where they never test the players suspected.

These kids I know were not difference makers on the team, and could just be sour grapes because of that. If it is true it isn't at all out of the question that Notre Dame has a zero tolerance policy on this compared to other programs. It could definitely explain how there are more injuries.

Like I said, this doesn't mean this is fact and the "reason" behind it, but it is interesting to think about. Most likely it is just horrible luck on our part.

It's ridiculous. That is just about the entire starting defense. Last year was bull**** as well.

And yet the offense has been relatively unscathed in comparison. So friggin' strange,.

But as bad as it's been, it's been bad other places as well. Florida was just killed with injuries last year. Georgia too. Both teams were ravaged by the injury bug. I remember one practice last year, USC had 21 players out with injuries. 21! It's a violent, violent game. We see it with our team because we follow it so closely, but other programs get hit as well.

But yeah, this is atrocious...

Is it all absurd bad luck (combined with normal attrition)?

Or is there some correlation with playing Navy, as Sean asks?

I'm not sure what I think, or if there would even be a way to debate it fully, but I'm curious what you all think.

You play Navy, and suddenly dudes are dropping like flies a few weeks later. Body blow theory?

And seriously, this is our defense. They're all hurt, they just don't know it yet.

People complained about the injuries on defense and QB turnovers last year...I don't think anyone would have imagined we'd have even more turnovers and injuries this year than the previous year.

I want to buy that, but does anybody know the correlation between injuries and steroids? Does that really prevent certain injuries?

NFL players who use steroids have more injuries - Scientific American

Players who took the drugs suffered more disc herniations and injuries to their knees, elbows, necks, spines, feet, toes and ankles than those who didn’t use 'roids. For example, 21 percent of those who used the drugs said they'd suffered herniated discs, compared to 10 percent of players who didn’t take them. Nearly 31 percent of users hurt their elbows, versus 17 percent of non-steroid users.

True, but Florida and Georgia have the bodies to make up for it. We don't. They aren't the usual culprits of oversigning, but they definitely indulge in the typical SEC dirty recruiting that most undergo. Not to mention, they generally don't have to deal with the same non-injury related attrition that ND does. Heck, Georgia lost pretty much their entire secondary this year and even then, that's not as bad as ND's off-season woes.

I don't have any personal experience, but have read reports stating as such. I probably should had qualified my statement with a 'might" explain rather than a "definitely" explain. I have also read the exact opposite that steroids lead to a higher rate of injuries. I know the use of steroids can lead to a higher case of injuries to ligaments. I really don't think this is the cause, but just threw it out there to contribute to the discussion and bounce off of what Lax said about Stanford.

Positive effects of Anabolic/Androgenic steroids

Medicinal uses - Medicinal uses of steroids are doctor prescribed treatment of severe burns, and types of Breast cancer. Steroids can also be very helpful in the healing process. For example, a knee or shoulder injury (joint repair), steroids are also used in small quantities by physicians for treating some types of Anemia, Thrombosis, Osteoporosis, Endometriosis and Hereditary Angioedaema, Asthma, Muscle-wasting disorders.

For fighting against AIDS - It helps a person to gain weight for chronic nutritional deficiencies or AIDS wasting syndrome.
To improve nitrogen balance - With the help of steroids athletes can shift the nitrogen balance to the positive side for better utilization of ingested protein and the increased retention of nitrogen, the formation of a steroid-receptor complex in skeletal muscle stimulate the RNA-Polymerase system which, in turn, increases protein synthesis in the cell.
Hormonal replacement therapy - Steroids are use to treat hormonal replacement therapy after menopause. It helps to treat sexual dysfunctions. Anabolic steroids may block the effects of hormones such as Cortisol involved in tissue breakdown during and after exercise. Anabolic steroids may prevent tissue from breaking down following of an intense work-out. This would speed recovery. It helps athletes to recover faster from intense exercise. It increases muscle size through muscle fiber hypertrophy which leads to increases muscle percentage in both male and female.

They can be used for healing purposes but when you take steroids you are generally more likely to have injuries while using it. Those are two different things. Steroids don't prevent injuries (in fact you are more likely to be injured while using them) but they do help you heal from injuries.

You are correct in that. I think I read that HGH couple with IGF has been shown to prevent injuries and stimulate cartilage repair, maybe that is what I am thinking about? I know it isn't exactly "steroids", but would be categorized as a performance enhancing substance correct?

This is again very misleading. Many catastrophic (i.e. season ending) injuries occur as a direct result of fatigue and being "banged up" such that the athlete's body either consciously or subconsciously compensates for minor injuries which leaves you more susceptible to the big ones. Furthermore, you reduce risk of compounding injuries that evolve from "minor" to "serious."

Misleading, there are many steroids (and other substances, such as hormones, but let's not get into this now) that when used correctly DRASTICALLY assist with recovery time and healing.

Reckless use of steroids does lead to long term joint and ligament damage, but that's not hat we're really talking about.

Steroids help with healing (and even that is debatable, it really helps if you have hurt a muscle but not as much with ligaments, tendons, etc) but they are more likely to cause joint issues, ligament issues, and particular tendon issues.

That is for steroids, now I can't speak for things like HGH and hormones as I don't know enough about it.

Somewhat true. Steroids make the muscle stronger but don't make the tendon stronger (and in some cases might even make it weaker but the studies have been mixed on that) and when a much stronger muscle keeps pulling on the tendon, you are more likely to get tendon issues.

Tendonitis and ruptured tendons increase with steroid use.

Yes, they do, but when people talk about the "juice" these days they're not talking about 80s and 90s era steroids... they're talking about HGH and other stuff that is really, really beneficial to keeping football players in "fit" condition over the course of a season. If you're on the right regiment of performance enhancing drugs it's extremely beneficial to your health/performance with minimal to no long term mechanical breakdown risks.

Not to mention there really is no proven method to test for HGH that I am aware of. This coupled with the longevity and recovery aspect make it a favorite among athletes.

Is there a list in IrishEnvy of the injury report on all Irish players and their prognosis and status and healing time? If not, i think this would be considerably helpful. I, for one, can't keep straight what the deal with Hounshell is? As well as Baratti and Deeb, Councell, Turner, and Randolph? Are they not playing because they were beat out or are they injured?

Also how about Jalen Brown and Josh Atkinson? Is it true that these guys don't even dress for games?
