I get what you're saying, lots of variables involved. But it had no effect.

The lifestyle of an NFL coach vs. a college coach is night and day different. NFL coaches basically work from July to January. During the offseason, they are literally off with little to no obligations.

College coaches work from July to January too. Then they proceed to work from January to July traveling across the country, calling and texting, zooming, etc. to recruit 16-18 year old kids.

Now you have to add in the NIL component which just provides further complexity and stress.

Oh and how you do during the "offseason" basically decides the future of your career.

So you are presented with these two options and sit down with your family to discuss. In order to stay at ND, you basically need to decide that all the additional stress and work will have some profound effect on the future of your career. For most guys, that's not going to be the case.
For sure. Thanks for entertaining the thought.

I know that, at least from the two position coaches (not ND) I hang out with, that the overall state and wellness of their team has a direct and major impact on how often they entertain the thought of moving on in some form (either laterally to another team, promotion to another team, or entertaining NFL). This can be in the form of contemplating it, actively entertaining conversations, or actively reaching out.
Maybe they’re just special cases and not really representative of the overall scene.

Appreciate the response. We’ll just agree to disagree, but no biggie.

That’s my worry. That it’s actually a circus behind the scenes.

I think the single biggest thing that goes against that, is Mason and Freeman are tight. Mason was supposedly approached by a lot of top college programs already this year and didn't seem to entertain any discussions. I don't think he would leave Freeman unless the gig is too good (i.e. the NFL).

I reckon we might find the special teams success was as much to do with the culture freeman insists on compared to bk and the next guy will be successful as well. Maybe not 8 blocks but success in the return game or something

You would think there would be a little bit of loyalty since they are friends.
As a friend you wouldn’t stop someone from taking a promotion. Come on man. He’s not jumping ship to Purdue he’s going to coach in the NFL

It would suck to loose him but this is a good look for Marcus Freeman. Coaches want to play for coaches where they can get promoted, the Colts job would be a huge promotion for BM and this should attract other talented coaches that want to move up the food chain.

The NFL will drop you as fast as they picked up. Coaching with a buddy like Freeman you more likely to have stability.

If he gets fired who do you think would be the first call to him? If not with MF he’d get another college job in a heartbeat

Just seems weird to jump to NFL when Special teams are pretty much dead

Pretty certain nfl coaches are working January-July. Granted, they’re not out traveling the country and DM’ing 16 year olds all day. But they’re still putting in the hours.

Head coaches wouldn’t go for guys not busting ass, putting in the hours in March. Owners aren’t going to pay dudes high 6 and 7 figure salaries to work on their short game for 6 months out of the year.

Again, college and pros are different animals, but each is out earning their money. Or they get shitcanned.

If a coach wants to make head coach he has to learn the recruiting skills as there are only 32 NFL job.

Yes it a total misconception that NFL coaches "don't work" in the off season. In fact, I bet there are hundreds in sunny Indianapolis right now and that's not a March vacation site by any stretch of the imagination.

The nature of the work is different, however. And way less travel.

How much of that does the special teams coach have to do?
I assume he’s out recruiting as much as the other members of the staff but I have no idea. I would hate being in a sales job, personally. Recruiting is just that. I’m sure others enjoy it.

That doesn't always help recruiting though. I know you SHOULD NOT go to a school due to the coaches but that's who they build relationships with.

I honestly thought that when BK was looking for a special teams coach he would try and poach Mason; glad he didn't.

College football is rapidly changing (not in a good way in my opinion) and when any coach has a great year (individually) they are going to get noticed; also having Notre Dame on your resume helps.

If Freeman would be going into his 5th year as the HC I wouldn't mind all this turnover, but it is his 2nd year and I would raise the question to an insider why are coaches leaving?

Does no one want to ride it out with MF?
It's not a MF thing. It's a college football is turning into an unsustainable hell for assistant coaches thing. We've seen a good number (Florida just lost 3 assistants to the NFL) jump to the NFL for less stress, no recruiting, no NIL stuff, and sometimes more money.

The head coaches won't jump because they make too much money, but my guess is assistants will continue leaving unless the NCAA changes the recruiting calendar and signing day. December is an idiotic month in college football right now.

Freeman was at the women's ACC tournament game last night, maybe he is looking for a coach in the NC area.

When your staff is filled with young coaches with ambition, they’re going to want to climb the ladder.

Honestly I think that’s a good thing that MF can identify talented young coaches. You know why nobody poached BK’s assistants? Because they were old, known commodities, and they were either average or they sucked. It’s easy to be loyal when you aren’t that good or sought after. This staff isn’t comprised of a bunch of Jeff Quinns, Brian Polians, or Del Alexanders.

It isn’t that deep.
