Notre Dame fucked up 8 years ago when urban meyer wanted to
Come here but they would form up the cash or academic passes. I'm with giving Sanford the job for a year and seeing how it goes. Either way I think Sanford is gone this year coaching somewhere else. I think he would kill it in recruiting. Does anyone know if Sanford has actually called any plays to date?!

Imo, Coach needs to do two things to be successful here:
1. Find a great defensive mind.
2. Change his lateral/passive running game.

Both can be fixed this offseason.

The reason I am losing patience with him is that #2 will not change. You can win a lot of games with the air raid, but you don't win playoff games/big bowl games with it. The four dominant teams right now are Clemson, OSU, Michigan and Bama. They all play power football. Clemson and OSU run spread sets, but it is power football. The pull linemen/tight ends and block the second level. Clemson is the closest thing to finesse of the four, but they have an otherworldly quarterback right now and an incredible defense.

You can't give anyone the job 'for a year'. That's just not how it works

After watching this game I believe Brian Kelly has succumbed to the pressure of coaching at ND and has lost his mind.

I'm sure the administration wouldn't take Petrino due to his past transgressions, and he probably wouldn't be interested anyway, but I would take him. I don't care if he had Kim Jong Un on the back of his Harley, his teams win.

I would take Les' tenure at LSU over BK's tenure at ND any day of the week. He won 10+ games 7 times and won a Peach Bowl, a Cotton Bowl, a Sugar Bowl, and a NC. His message just got stale and he ran out of time at LSU. That is the same thing happening to BK now, only Les took the Tigers higher than BK has taken the Irish.

Oh, I disagree with you there. Les took a program that Saban built into a powerhouse and kept the plates in the air for 7 years before crashing back to earth. That's not nothing -- DiNardo proved you can lose at LSU -- and his defenses have ranged from solid to great. But he's proven definitively that he's absolutely clueless on offense and careless in game management. He also did his balancing act at a school where I think recruiting is far easier than at Notre Dame; you basically just have to hold on to your hometown kids who're being recruited by half the state and you're guaranteed a top-10 to top-5 class every year. To me, that's not as impressive as the job Kelly's done restocking some pretty bare cupboards, although I agree with your "he did okay, but his message has grown stale" take on Kelly.

But Miles' warts were clear even at the outset at LSU. Ask an LSU fan -- they never fully bought into Miles, even when he was winning championships. He was always seen as the guy who got to bask in Saban's afterglow and never really knew what he was doing. Even the years when he won it all, there were several games where he nearly cost some supremely talented teams a victory or two with boneheaded moves. The glare has gotten more intense with the losing, but he's also looked increasingly helpless to fix the offense and even his defense has started to sag. I don't think that's a message wearing out, I think that's an above average coach whose time has now passed.

This isn't about Xs and Os anymore, and nothing is getting fixed by starting to run vertical rather than horizontal, and getting a better DC. BKs teams always lack passion, the S/C program sucks, and he's starting to lose public support of fans and former players on Twitter (Matt Hegarty, cj promise, Christine golic, etc).

I just watched the presser. All nine brutal minutes. There's this narrative that Kelly's "throwing players under the bus." I don't know. I didn't see it.

Yes, he said the snapping sucked. It did. But he didn't say "Mustipher blew it." He said the offensive execution was inconsistent. Also true, and - I think to a guy like Kelly who values process - largely on the coaching. He took a lot of blame on himself and his coaching staff for not putting them in better position to win. And he pointed out that in all four losses we've had the ball late with a chance to win/tie and haven't closed the deal. Mostly he just looked beat.

Ultimately we've got a team that, for whatever reason, lacks mental toughness. Too many missed tackles. Too many dropped balls. Too many guys trying to do too much and making too many mistakes in the process. Some of that's on the coaching. Some of it's on the players. Either way it's frustrating as hell. There's no reason we shouldn't be undefeated. I suspect Kelly knows that.

That has been the way Kelly coaches. It shouldn't come down to "we had a shot late" against Duke or State or really Texas. The talent ND has, the first two should have been over by halftime.
He'll get down big in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, come roaring back in the 4th with good play calling and then as soon as ND ties it up or takes a small lead, it's back to consistent 3 and outs. The other team takes the lead and his team can't pull it out.
The talent he has, ND should be able to blow out a team once in a while.

Serious question. Do you think Kelly wants out at ND? Is he trying to get fired as opposing to resigning? If he were to resign would he still be entitled to his contract? I'm trying to make sense of it all and the only thing that makes sense is Kelly wants to get fired.

Several people have stated this but I just cannot see a type A, ultra-competitive person ever do something with the intention of losing. I think his play-calling is indicative of his ego rather than ulterior motives.

Can I ask why people are putting venables and Arranada on a list of candidates? You realize how bad we were the last time we gave the head coaching job to a d coordinator with ZERO head coaching experience....oh wait the start of the demise of notre dame football.....

With our academic requirements and other challenges it's going to be pretty hard to steal a HC away from a decent Power 5 program. That leaves OCs and DCs in P5, and HCs from non P5 schools as our pool of candidates unless something out of the norm happens.

So you believe hiring the next Charlie Weis is the right answer? That worked well last time also.

Because they are realistic options. At least ND would have have a well-coached defense. What is the alternative? What big time head coach is going to leave a good situation to take a chance at ND?

I maybe wouldn't be as blunt about it, but I agree. Firing BK now or at the end of the season would only set the program back. It's impulsive to think anything else.

I do believe that Kelly's job is safe. I think Jack likes Kelly and isn't going to pay to coaches this kind of money. Jack isn't going to listen college football analyst or read what the fans want on a message board.

With that said does anyone think that Kelly can turn this around around with just a good defensive coordinator hire?

Sure, anyone would take that in comparison, but what's there to think that Les will come in and be just as successful at ND? LSU is pretty lenient in who they can bring in as far as players, and they're in one of the best possible places in terms of recruiting...right next door to Texas, as well as in proximity to many great southern states including their own. I doubt things would be much different had Les been our coach during BK's tenure. It could possibly be worse. Les' most successful years were immediately after Saban left LSU. They've been getting progressively worse ever since.

Fire Kelly, promote Denbrock, with the understanding that Mike Stanford is truly the OC. Bring in a young successful DC, or make Hudson DC with Elston.

What is worse about that than what we have?

Not sure I'd take Denbrock as coach after watching the offensive game he called last week. Maybe if Sanford was calling the plays exclusively.

One for every horrible loss during BK's tenure at ND. So we actually need a couple more.

You must be the type of person that would bitch when you won the lottery because someone else won it with you and you had to split the prize. I can't find one single post where you had anything good to say about BK or Notre Dame football. Why do you even watch the games or follow the team? Even when they win, you find things to bitch about. IT IS JUST A GAME!!!

When did we win the lottery? We haven't won anything in 25 years.

I can't find one single post where you had anything good to say about BK or Notre Dame football.

I don't want to ask you if you have seen the games, but I have to ask you: have you seen the games?

Why do you even watch the games or follow the team?

Because I go to ND (and therefore root for ND) and because I am interested in sports. The same reason I go to hockey, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, etc., games.

Even when they win, you find things to bitch about.

Have you seen a Saban or Belichick postgame press conference after a win?

IT IS JUST A GAME!!!

I'm aware it is just a game. This is an internet sports forum; the point is to discuss games.

In my mind, that is the other shoe to drop this off-season. I can't see Denbrock getting a great HC offer and if he doesnt leave, is Sanford willing to coach his 3rd season as OC in name only.

Denbrock is a good teacher. I would hate to see him leave... but I would hate to see Sanford go as well. Something's gotta give.

I want a monster name.

I want our Harbaugh, Urban, Saban.

I want the name that makes recruits WANT to play at Notre Dame.

We need a giant.

This is slightly insane but I want Gruden roaming our sidelines, with the scowl and everything.

Chucky still has clout and you know the kids would be fired up every week and coached by one of the best.

Pipe dream though. (Yet, he does have ties.)

But I still think that's the type of splash we need to make.
