Breaking down ND/OU

I think this game will hinge on defense. OU has a history for appearing to be a good team only to be stunned by strong defenses in BCS games. The same could happen here. If we can pressure Landry we increase our chances greatly. A couple of turnovers wouldn't hurt either.

Okay...

OU is doomed and should just forfeit.

There is no way on earth that OU can compete with ND. Their defense is just so stout and invincible! It would just make OU look more honorable to just not show up.

BYU, michigan, MSU, Navy, etc are way over OUs caliber and OU is out of their league....OU is doomed!

Seriously though, please stop acting as if Notre Dame has played all these offensive and defensive juggernauts! Their not!

And stop acting like ND is heads and shoulders above KSU!

Jesus, we Sooner fans see that ND is a much improved and definitely deserving of the success they are having. We (at least the logical and realistic ones) OU fans understand that OU I sfacing arguably the best derfense they will all season.

I got a question for you ND fans....

How is ND going to be ready for an up tempo no huddle offense that OU has mastered? What will happen if OU jumps up by 2 or 3 scores early and keeps pooring it on offensively?

Everyone is talking about how unbelievably NFL the ND defense is, are they in good enough shape to stay on the field without subbing? If ND chooses to line up in their base 3-4 without being in nickle, will your base personnel be good enough to cover the slots and RBs on passing routes?

Trust me. If ND sits in zone all game, Landry will surgically pick it apart. If you go man more than not, the speed and size on the outside will streak downfield.

I personally will be surprised if ND gets less than 3 sacks and less than 9 hurries on Jones.

That said, some of you said you have watched the OU/KSU game video. Good. Now watch the Tech game video. The Texas and KU game videos as well.

You will see a much definite Landry Jones. The KSU game, he was trying to slide out of the pocket all game long. In the last three games, when the defense was pressuring Jones, he has been trusting his pocket and stepping into it. He was more worried about giving the ball away than getting sacked.

He also has more trust in his receiving corps. Something clicked after that KSU game, that he seems to be back to his 2010 form, not his late 2011 form.

My point, I think it doesn't matter how much pressure you put on Landry. He has the trust in his WRs and OL. He doesn't play the game as he has to win it. He is playing the game to get the ball to his playmakers. And he has plenty of them.

On defense, OU plays gap assignment on the front. The LBs uncluded. You won't see a lot of blitzing. You won't see a lot of stunting. But you will see movement to the ball. You will see gaps being filled. And you will see two cornerbacks that can shut your passing game down. You will see two safeties that can be game changers.

If OU plays their best game, and if ND plays their best game, its going to be the team with the best special teams play that wins. If no turnovers occur, if few penalties occur, if both plays well, the special teams will decide this game.

I'm excited about it. I obviously want OU to win. But I also have some big doubts. ND seems to be destined for something special and OU is standing in their way.

Some have said ND has nothing to lose. Yeah they do. They lose their control of their own destiny if they lose. OU has NC contenders to lose. So its a game that both teams have a lot to lose and everything to gain.

ND, this isn't Michigan or BYU you are gearing up to play. This is the winningest BCS AQ team since 2000 you arfe about to play. This is the winningest team since 1946 you are about to play.

OU will be ready, will you?

FYI the last time an undefeated ranked non-conference team came to norman, they left very upset at their team. (FSU)

Great post.

But a part of me almost wants to see that strategy not work so Kelly is forced to let Golson sling it. We've got the pieces in guys like Golson, Chris Brown, Davaris and Davonte Neal. Kelly just doesn't trust them yet. Saturday is a great time to grow up, fellas.

Golson - RS Freshman
Brown - Freshman
Daniels - RS Freshman
Neal - Freshman

You're in for a rude awakening.

There are no freshmen any more. It's not crazy to hope some of our young guys take a giant leap this weekend, and then maybe our offense does play at a level that it hasn't yet all season.

They are all still freshman, and while it's not crazy to hope it is crazy to expect to see.

I don't think any OU fan will disagree with you on this point. OU fans are hoping that the offense we trotted out against KSU is a thing of the past. Since that game, we've been on fire. Landry and our receiving corp are becoming tuned and polished. In addition, RB DD Williams is starting over Whaley (who was coming off an ACL tear last year). Also, we are finally giving our best offensive weapon (as already mentioned) Millard the carries/touches that he deserves. You have to blame our OC Josh Heupel for not getting him the ball multiple times a game.

With that said, y'all have to hope that we are not much improved since the KSU game and that our success is due to the defenses we've played (Tech, Texas, and KU). I think that's your general sentiment.

Maybe the improved offensive output is due to playing less than stellar defenses since the KSU game?

The biggest difference now and a BCS game?

ND doesn't have a month to prepare for the offense! To come up with different wrinkles that can disrupt the timing of the offense.

I may have my doubts about this game for OU. But let's look at something.

2010, FSU was suppose to be this great defense. Suppose to be this great offense. They lose to OU and it wasn't even close.

2011, FSUS was suppose to be this great top notch defense. Great DL ( and they were). But OU came away with a close and deciding victory in Talahassee.

2008, Texas Tech was suppose to be this great offensive team. They came in Ranked #1 in the BCS. They left embarassed and humbled.

Don't try to compare this to a BCS game. IMHO its bigger. But the opposition doesn't have 4+ weeks to prepare for the offense!

Good luck this weekend.

Maybe NDs great defense comes against rather weak offenses?

Maybe that beat down OU put on then #1 defense from Texas Tech wasn't that good? Even though they only allowed 14 points vs. WVU?

I don't know. But some of you fans are sounding a lot like Texas fans. Maybe, just maybe, OU is playing like the team many thought they were before the season?

I mean quite a few people had OU in their Top 5 and some predicted OU to the BCS title game.

I think this is a good time to note that we allowed Denard Robinson two less TDs (granted, two more fgs) than the heralded Alabama D. I'm excited to find out on Saturday, because frankly I'm not 100% sure myself.

This can go on forever. OUFan brings up a point, ND counter points and rebutts, OU counter points then rebutts.....

Isn't this the point of a message board? To waste time by talking about, rehashing, and arguing about useless information and statistics that will have no impact on the game?

To me, it's fun. That's why I'm here, even if it is pointless or a waste of time. The game will be won on the field, but in the meantime I will enjoy the week leading up to a historic game between two of college football's heavyweights.

Perhaps, history will repeat. ND playing the powerful "go go" Oklahoma offense of Bud Wilkerson. Well we didn't have 4 weeks to prepare for that one either.

This pissing match is still going on???? Hey folks I think we have beat this dead horse long enough. We're going to go back and forth and guess what, both sides are dug in and won't be moving. Both teams are good, hope the game lives up to the hype and both teams come out major injury free.

Saturday can't get here soon enough.

One thing I like about this site is the idea that it welcomes posters from other teams if they stay constructive.

Unfortunately, 99% of those 'constructive' posters from other teams seem to descend into snarkyness and vague trolling after a couple of days.

In short: they're starting to **** me off.

Well, I'm sure you heard this before too...

If its pzzes you off, then maybe you shouldn't be part of the message board world?

That said, this is what's great about college football! We fans get to talk crap to each other (in my case, all in good fun) while we wait for the game. Then when its over, one side is usually serving up the crow and the other is eagerly consuming it.

No, what you aren't getting is that this is OUR board and that you are a guest. Jughed has been here a long time and is friends with us, you will be gone after Saturday at the latest.

So you better start coming correct around here. We are all for civil college football talk, but this board was made for us, not you.

And some of you Sooner fans are starting to sound like USC fans. You guys have a good offense but you're not an unstoppable offensive juggernaut that many OU fans, not just here but all over the internet, are making OU out to be. OU is the best offense we've played this year, and possibly the best we'll play all year but to make it seem like you're going to hang 50, 60, 70 points on our defense is just misguided.

Interesting that you just assume I was referring to you.

You can go to your message board and talk all the snark you want... we're not interested in eagerly consuming anything you have to offer.

(Of course I'm just speaking for myself.)

Exactly. OU fans started out good but the past 2 days they've become extremely annoying. I don't understand the need to come to another team's message board and talk about how great your team is? I've gone to about 4 of our rival's boards this year and I've never made an account and I never plan on commenting. I just simply like to see what they think about the game.

This thread is very entertaining to say the least.

One thing I would like to point out is the fact that this Oklahoma team is not that of 2008. I have seen a few different remarks made about the Cincinnati vs Oklahoma contest, in which Kelly coached.

First of all, I believe that game was 24 to 20 in the third quarter, which would hardly scream blowout. I also think that the starting quarterback for the Bearcats went down that game. Additionally, that Oklahoma team had Sam Bradford, and went to the National Championship game.

I think it is pretty safe to say that this Oklahoma team is not nearly as great as the 2008 team. Also, this Notre Dame team is a far cry better than the Bearcat team of that same year. The only thing that is consistent is the coaches.

With all that being said, this game will come down to coaching. Both teams have the players to succeed on a BCS level, and at this point should know their identity. It will most likely be a dogfight no matter who comes out on top.

For all the Oklahoma fans, please spare us the history lessons on past Oklahoma teams, because it holds no water on the game being played Saturday. This includes the 79-4 record at home since Stoops arrived, as the 4 in the loss column is in "recent" history. GO ND!

So I just checked out an OU board. I originally googled it to see if one even existed because of the damn exodus of sooner fans to this board. And I found out two things: 1) An Ou fan board actually does exist. and 2) The reason for the huge influx of fans is because the sooner fans have basically declared this their biggest game in program history.

Not quite.
It very likely is our biggest home game in a decade though.
Unfortunately, we play our biggest game every year in Dallas. And we have had some bad luck in terms of scheduling opponents that look great, but then end up crappy or just a lower top-25 type team 5 years down the line when the game is finally played (Washington, Miami, Florida State, etc.).

So getting a chance at a top 5 team who we rarely play at home is quite the treat for us. Not to mention the fact that it's a team who historically owns us, so the older portion of the fanbase gets much more riled up than they usually are.

So yes, OU does view this as a pretty big game, and a potential great experience for everyone involved. But certainly not close to the biggest game in program history. Not even close to the biggest game in the last 5 years. Just none of the others were at home.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The second part you bolded was about games in general, not just home games. We haven't had any home games this big in a while, but we've had bigger games away from home is what I meant.

I'm on here to see what y'all think about your squad, our squad, and how they will match up. I answer questions about OU specifics but I'm not making any predictions on the game.

The board I post on is more interested in talking about who said what on twitter or how "striping the stadium" will turn out. There are a few interesting threads about the game and I've been reading and posting in those. But OU fans can't tell me anything I don't know already.. At least for the most part. I've learned a lot about your team from posting here and honestly I'm a lot more worried the more I read.
Off to bed and out of town tomorrow. If I don't have a chance to post again before the game, then CHEERS! I've had a fun time talking some football with you. I will unfortunately be out of town for the game and might not be able to watch any of it. Terrible timing, huh?

Deuces homies!!
