I've also heard stories of people rushing to donate blood immediately after running a marathon. Also, in some of the video, you can see plenty of people running towards the explosion scenes to help. If you really think about that and let it sink in, these people had no idea what was going on or if the explosions were over or if the scene was secure and put themselves in danger to go help others. Truly incredible and inspirational.
Heard on the scanner that NY and CT had blood en route within like an hour and a half.

Bill Iffrig knocked down by Boston blast | ksdk.com

This is the guy I'm sure you've all seen get knocked over during the first blast.

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A 78-year-old Washington state man running his third Boston Marathon was near the finish line when he was knocked down by one of two bomb blasts.

Bill Iffrig of Lake Stevens told The Herald that he heard a noise Monday and found himself on the ground. He says that he ended up with a scrape on his knee, and that a race official helped him to his feet.

He was caught in a Boston Globe photograph that quickly went viral.

Iffrig says most of the other runners near the area weren't as close to the explosion as he was. He walked across the finish line and another half-mile to his hotel.

I saw something about there being a big group of people from Sandy Hook representing and running with a banner. They had a 26 sec moment of silence before the race honoring those victims.

That some of those people have had to experience two national headline tragedies recently,
its crazy.

My perspective likely comes from being a unmarried 23 year old male. It's hard for me to conceptualize having a kid or a family that I care about as much as myself right now. (Other than my immediate family, but I'm sure it's... different.) I just think of the young looking guy who lost a leg and I identify with him. Was he an athlete? What were his hobbies? Assuming his friends do those same hobbies, will they stick with him? or only stay for the short term? Does he have a girlfriend? Fiance? Wife? What will that be like? How could he not feel guilty about that for her?

I guess what I'm saying is that though I would much rather live in the long run, the short term uncertainty of my life that such a cruel injury brings would terrify me. I imagine how he feels, and I just get incredibly mad on his behalf.

I will tell you as a parent of 2 small children, that there is nothing I fear more than something happening to one of them. People could do whatever they want to me but harm my child and I will hunt you (not you but you know what I mean) down. If I got a hold of that person they would wish that they were dead or that the police had them.

My thoughts and prayers are with the individuals and families of the people injured or killed today. Words cannot express the sadness that I feel for these families, especially that of the young child killed.

I would hope that their acts of heroism are not only a "Bah-ston" thing, but an "American" thing across the board. It's stuff like this that makes us the greatest country in the world. While sad for the victims, I'm proud as hell of our brothers and sisters in Mass.

Thoughts and prayers continue....

Not to mention people who suffer from these types of injuries often fall into a state of depression which negatively impacts their lives.

This is no joke. I am on a clinical rotation at the Rehab Institute of St Louis and work with new amputees and amputees living with them for a long time. The emotional aspect of losing a limb or becoming a para/quadriplegic (who I'm also working with) is incomprehensible unless you have been through it. Prayers to those affected today.

Also keep in mind that of the x amount of injured likely include concussions from the blast. These are no joke as well. Let's not disregard the injured saying they are okay as there are serious repercussions from these concussions that can last a lifetime.

And sometimes the amputations isn't the worst part dealing with the infection that come with are terrible and painful for them. It is terrible for them.

I pray for everyone; and, I grieve for all that suffered. I just held my kids close tonight, and told them I love them. I do not have words to express what went through my mind, thinking about if anything would happen to them . . .

But I was absolutely impressed at how quickly all cell phone service was downed in the area, in the event that other devices may be waiting to be detonated.

Especially sad to hear about the 8 year old killed. It's hard to imagine as a parent waking up this morning with your child and not even having the thought cross your mind that you wouldn't be tucking them into bed tonight or ever again. It makes me sick to think about it.

What an incredibly sad day that brings so many memories rushing back. It sucks to live in a world where immediately when hearing about this, I knew exactly what it was. Straight out of the terrorist handbook. Major event, lots of people, high profile, incite panic, etc. Its hard to find the positive in these events, but this could have been a whole lot worse had these devices been packed in cars or trucks. They would have leveled blocks. I'm so sad for these victims, but proud of the response of so many people. Many times these secondary devices are designed to kill emergency responders or those running from the first detonation. But people ran headlong into danger to help each other as we always seem to do in these horrible times. My heart is with those in Boston, a tremendous city with tough, gritty people. We will get through this.

Man, that is some heavy dope.......god bless to everyone involved. To all the first responders that jumped right into the thick of things no questions asked just shows the american spirit. A a EMT things like that cant be explained.....your body reacts and the last thing you wanted to be called is a hero. They did their job and as far as everything seems they did it well. God Bless them

May Martin be filled with loving kindness;
May Martin be healthy and strong;
May Martin be free of all dangers, internal or external.
May Martin be filled with the ease of well being.
May Martin be happy!

My heart goes out to Martin's family, his little sister lost her leg (reportedly), and mom suffered a traumatic brain injury. We need to do something for this family. Prayers are a start.

I am donating as much blood as I can this week as I am Type O. I feel like doing something tangible at least.

I was panicking from the time I heard about to until the time I finally got ahold of my buddy who usually makes the trip to run the race. He hadn't signed up to run it this year.

This crap makes me so angry. The sad thing is that its only going to get worse and there is literally nothing that can be done about it. I do not expect this to happen in a stadium atmosphere because atleast most places do back pack and purse searches.

First responders are God's soldiers man. They do it all and despite being scared internally they run in and battle this stuff. There is something wrong in the world today when these people are being paid peanuts for what they do. Absolute true heroes.

You hit the nail on the head phork. This country's priorities are all f*cked up.

The thing that still bothers me the most is the one thing that is always the same every time something like this happens is the screaming. You can never get that out of your head. From young men crying for their mothers to a random scene like this. It is the screaming. It starts before the last echo dies, even though there appears an eerie silence. It starts like a soft moan. I still weep when I hear it.

All things considered, it's lucky the nutjob who did this wasn't professional because this could have been way worse.

You don't know this wasn't a pro. They must have been small, hard to detect devices that went off within 12 seconds of each each other.

But the first responders were pro's! The onsite triage, and care these victims received, and their close proximity to the hospitals saved many lives.

Can we stop with the guy on the roof bit? Literally thousands of people on roofs up and down the marathon route.

HAHAHA. I shouldn't be laughing in this thread, but that big foot image w/ the man on the roof cracked me up.

I will say, that I had to shut down my twitter last night. There's way too much misinformation going around. The facts will eventually come out. Until then, people need to stop spreading this crap around as if it's absolute truth.
