I think we need to be the highest ranked of teams among the SEC and B10 non-CFP teams.

This is correct. It’s not about what the bowls want. It’s about how the CFP committee ranks them. The Orange has to take the highest ranked team out of SEC/B1G/ND. Same with the Cotton. It must take the highest ranked at large team. There just aren’t a lot of spots this year because the typical 2 other “at large” bowls are the CFP playoff games.

Good to know thanks. So is it safe to assume we will at least be above Michigan once they lose to OSU?

I would imagine so, unless they keep it close and then one could make the argument that they would just keep their spot.

At this point, ND will be remembered by non-ND fans for one game. So just get to 11 wins regardless of bowl destination.

I don’t think this is right as some projections have Notre Dame going to the orange against Florida but not sure

I think the only way that could happen is if we supplanted the ACC's spot in the Orange Bowl.
Seems like that SHOULD be possible, given our ACC ties, the strong likelihood that that ACC team is an unranked team who we've even beaten (Va. or Va. Tech). But I don't think that it is possible, given the rules.

EDIT: 247 bowl projections are wrong. ND cannot take the ACC slot in the orange Bowl.

If this team goes 10-2, I can see ND going to a New Years 6 bowl.

ND draws $$$, it's a win-win for the bowl sponsor and ND.

There's no way that another acc team outside of Clemson is worthy of a big time bowl.

The team just needs to win the next two games and let the chips fall where they may.

Many are saying the same of us. But that is a valid point.

Pretty sure no one would say any of those ACC teams are more worthy of a big time bowl than us.

Agreed. Right now there’s a chance UVA & VT could be playing for the Atlantic crown where they would face Clemson in the ACC champ game. Both of those teams already have three losses w/ one of those three coming against ND. Pitt may still be in play as well but VT & Pitt face off next Sat.

Seems pretty certain we will be playing at noon 12/28. Both the Cotton and Camping World are at that time.

ND should have negotiated better with the ACC/Orange Bowl when first making the agreement. It’s unfortunate that we essentially count as an ACC team in all other bowls except the Orange Bowl. Now they will get a 4 loss team facing Florida/Alabama/Georgia. Not that I necessarily want to play those teams in a bowl this year. But attendance and TV wise, most years we would give a much better matchup than ACC #2

I want the Cotton. Good things happen to us in the Cotton Bowl. 77, 79, 94 off the top of my head.

I'll take it for the implied matchup alone. It's about time ND gets a NYD cupcake.

No. 15 Notre Dame
The Fighting Irish have found another gear. Since the blowout loss to Michigan and a funky, narrow win against Virginia Tech, Notre Dame has beaten Duke and Navy by a combined 90-27. The Irish put up 300 yards and 38 points in the first half and cruised. Finish strong against BC and Stanford, and Notre Dame could be in position for a New Year's Six bowl, not a bad consolation prize considering how dire things looked in Ann Arbor. -- Bill Connelly

Oklahoma vs Bama with Jalen Hurts killing them while Tua is absent would be some sort of script few could write.

After reading an article on the situation, the problem this year arises from the fact that the Fiesta and Peach Bowl are the semi-finals. Both of those bowls have no conference tie-ins and we would probably be much easier to get into then what we are seeing with the Cotton and Orange.

Whoever projected ND vs UF in the Orange Bowl hasn’t read the rules of bowl slotting. That can’t & won’t happen.

Looks more & more like ND will face off vs Iowa State in the Camping World Bowl in Orlando. I don’t see a close 2nd option to that.

If we blow the doors off of BC and Stanford the way we did Duke and Navy I’ll be pretty bummed to play Whatever Big 12 team in the Camping World Bowl. This team deserves better than that.

Sucks the bowl alignments fell the way they did (and of course the bed-shitting at Michigan)

Good catch. I think the guy thought ND could take the ACC slot (as they can in other ACC tie-in bowls) but reading through the rules, that is not an option with the Orange Bowl so I do not see us getting into the Orange Bowl.

Don't care where we play, I just don't want to get stuck playing the best team not in the playoff which is so often the case with ND (title game pre playoff being also a thing for a number of years).

You’re in luck as it looks now. Instead we will face a team that will get zero ND fans excited but it’ll likely be one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) game in ISU history. There’s a smaller chance it could be Oklahoma St which elicits about the same excitement.

They can deal and get excited when we actually win....

The big issue is the circular logic that leaves Notre Dame in their current position... and that issue is that Wisconsin waxed Michigan who waxed Notre Dame. Accordingly, they are grouping all those teams in the teens when arguably there is no reason for any of them to be behind someone like Florida.

Notre Dame's schedule is "soft" by Notre Dame standards... but Utah is about to go 11-1 playing ZERO ranked teams and losing to the only half decent team they played (USC). They have no business whatsoever being ranked 7th... they should probably be somewhere around 15th by any metric (eye test, resume, etc.). Is what it is, but it's going to be very hard for Notre Dame to grab the a spot in either the Cotton or Orange baring total chaos.

The Big Ten teams will play themselves out though. If Michigan loses to Ohio State, unless maybe it’s super-close, they’ll fall behind us. Same with Wisconsin. Minnesota likely has another loss vs either Wisconsin or Ohio State, same with Penn State vs Ohio State. It’s possible they’d stay ahead of us with two losses, but unclear at this point. And one of them can go to the Rose.

Baylor likely loses again - to either Texas or OU - and falls back. PAC-12 probably isn’t a factor for us as the winner of Oregon-Utah likely makes the playoff and the loser goes to the Rose Bowl.

It’s really the SEC that’s boxing us out, with Georgia, Florida and the winner of Bama/Auburn set to claim the Sugar Bowl AND both NY6 at-large spots. FSU somehow heating the Gators would help us a lot.

Again, all assuming we win our remaining games handily, which is obvs not to be taken for granted.
