Still affects us pretty badly. Scheduling is hard enough for ND, now Mich, MSU, Purdue, USC, Stanford will all have 9 conference games and a 10th designated game against another conference. 10 games against BCS teams? Why the hell would they want to play ND and make it 11? Maybe we can schedule more cupcakes and guarantee an easy schedule, but once our current scheduling contracts run out, its going to be very tough to play a schedule that would allow us to be taken seriously. Think Boise.

I think that now since the SEC has 14, and the ACC has 14, they will try to do one of these challenge things.

Kick wake forest out of the ACC, bring in ND. ND vs Alabama=we all win.

As for basketball, ND will get pummeled in the ACC going against NC, Duke, Maryland, 'Cuse.
Will make for one hell of a lacrosse season though.

That's a shame. ND has a nice little recent history in hockey and they just got a new arena.

The school seems to be finally making a commitment to hockey. Plus, in a couple of years ND will be in the most exciting conference in college hockey in Hockey East IMO.

And that's good. So most likely this means its a lock that Michigan will 7 home games and could have 8 when the Challenge game is in Ann Arbor. Dave Brandon wants more home games and I don't blame him.

Michigan plays a rare road non-conference game with conneticut in 2013. But I hear the ADept. is trying to get that game moved to New Meadowlands but UConn refuses. The buyout is $1 million, which is chump change because if they did pull out, you'd likely make more than $1 million in that extra home game that would result if Michigan pulls out.

Let's say the ACC isn't an option and they're content at 14.

What would you say to the Big 12 if they came knocking? If you think the travel would be an issue, remember, WVU is joining.

If we had to join a conference, I was an ACC lean until the Wake Forest game. But that scene was pathetic. Compare that to the Michigan game.

At least most of the Big Ten is serious about football. I'm not sure you'd say that about the ACC beyond Florida State, Clemson, Va. Tech and maybe Carolina. Even BC, one of the consistently better programs in the conference, rarely sells out their tiny stadium.

I realize we'd be regionalized in the Big Ten in a way we wouldn't in the expanded ACC, and that we'd be one of several traditional powers, which would water down our influence, instead of being a big fish in a smaller pond. On the other hand, imagine more Saturday nights in Durham and Winston-Salem. It's a tough call.

I am still an ACC lean and think recruiting into the future is going to be better if we plant the flag in the ACC. gives NY, MD, PA, NC, SC, FL, GA, VA, and MA....pretty good areas moving forward. Gives North and South better than most conferences.

We still keep our rivalries with USC (keeping Cal open) and Michigan (midwest) I don't see it as that bad.

We went over this ad nauseum in the conference expansion threads earlier this year.

ND's primary concern in joining a conference will be protecting its media markets. 4 of its 5 largest markets are in ACC territory, and it won't be losing Chicago simply due to proximity and alumni presence.

Joining the B1G would be brand suicide.

When ND joins I think it is more likely that a team gets booted (Wake Forest) then the ACC adding another to make 16 teams.

The Fighting Irish have a huge part of their schedule invested in those leagues. The fiercely independent Irish have five ongoing annual series with teams from those leagues: Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue of the Big Ten, and USC and Stanford of the Pac-12. If the leagues are going to add an annual game between members, would that potentially squeeze Notre Dame out of the mix?

Not likely, said Irish athletic director Jack Swarbrick, who has a close relationship with Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany.

“I don’t anticipate it having much of an impact,” Swarbrick told Yahoo! Sports. “I was aware it was coming; they sort of kept us informed. I think it’s a great thing for the two conferences.”

A more likely scenario than dropping Notre Dame is a reduction in conference games from nine to eight. Thus, the Big Ten vs. Pac-12 game would be a substitute for that league game on the schedule, which means Notre Dame’s spot would not have to be sacrificed in favor of a “guaranteed” home game against a lesser opponent.

The Big Ten is a better conference than the ACC in terms of football programs, so I don't think it'd be a bad thing to join the Big Ten. And obviously, it makes more geographical sense. I know about the markets, but since when has that been more important than winning against the best teams in the country?

I think it will have an impact on ND despite the B10 not going to a 9 conference game season. Compared to now, where this past season there is only one home and away game on the noncon schedule, this adds a second home and away series so the B10 and Pac12 teams have 1/2 less home game money per season. That means it will cost B10 and Pac12 teams several million dollars per year to keep ND on the schedule. Since money is driving the bus I wouldn't be surprised to see these rivalries go away, like Nebraska/Oklahoma, Texas/Texas A&M, etc.
