As I looked around the college football landscape this past weekend, something became apparent to me as a Notre Dame fan and supporter. The attitude that Notre Dame is so broken, not fixable, irrelevant and every other media bash is getting a bit over the top. I will be the first to admit that we are having a rough year and one for the records regarding if it could go wrong it has. We have suffered a lifetime of injuries, incredible tragedies and some wild on-field plays. All this being said, ND is still a major player in the national football landscape who will continue to be on TV every week, sell-out stadiums around the country, draw national recruits and be a top story on college football landscape. So, let me show all how NOT so broken ND is compared to all those other national powers.

First, ATTENDANCE!!! I watched a few games in particular this weekend that left me shaking my head regarding fan base. Early in the day, I found myself watching a Miami game, which made me realize just how great the ND fans are. The stadium at The U was half empty. At first, I thought it was an orange out because of all the orange I saw, but I realized then that those were EMPTY seats. Later in the day, I was watching Stanford play Arizona. Both teams ranked, both major players in the Pac-10 race and YET there were empty seats galore. This Saturday, ND will be un-ranked, but you will see a packed house. Late in the night, I was watching USC battle ASU in a really good game, but the stands were half empty late in the 3rd quarter. So, those folks that want to say ND is no longer relevant might want to look at the stadiums of those teams they say ARE relevant. The stadium in South Bend will be full of great fans on Saturday and we do not have the population base to draw from like, Miami, Los Angeles or others.

Second, BAD PERFORMANCES!!! All season, we have heard how bad ND is and they just can’t fix this. Well, I watched some of those PREMIER programs get manhandled and humiliated as bad or worse than ND. Take for instance, Texas!!! People will say that are due because they lost Colt McCoy after last season. Well, what about ND who lost Jimmy Clausen?? Further, Texas has all that talent right in their own backyard!!! How come they can’t just reload? But, ND was supposed to just roll along this year despite playing without Rudolph, Allen, Riddick and now Crist on O. Also, for how bad ND is we somehow beat the Big East team that will go to the BCS. Further, we only lost to the potential Big Ten Champs, by a gusty last second fake FG. Hey, all you folks who want to say that ND were chumps for losing so bad to Stanford. What are your thoughts about a ranked Arizona team getting manhandled worse than ND? In the end, ND has struggled this season, but no more than any team which is replacing an NFL QB while suffering an epic injury glut. Take a look at what will likely be the depth chart in 2011 and you will see a pretty good core coming back.

Third, CRAP DEFENSE!?! All season long our Defense has taken lumps from the media. Some they have deserved, but many times they have proven a pretty good group. As I watched UM score 4000 points on Saturday, it made me grin slightly that somehow we held them to 28. This was without our QB for half a game. While watching Stanford run up the score on Arizona, I wondered just how horrible our D was if we gave up a TD less than both Arizona and USC. By the way, just for a side note ND held both PITT and BC to their second lowest scoring totals of the year. I guess they both must have felt sorry for ND. Finally, that bad performance at Navy in which we all wondered how they could score so many points. Well, how did an option team just score 72 points this past week. YES, 72 points by Navy. I guess this crap defense is not the crappiest after all.

Forth, RECRUITING PANIC!!! In the past two weeks, we have had 3 Florida recruits de-commit. All has stated the distance issue. With these de-commits, you would think every kid in America is leaving ND. Well, far from the reality. In fact, several of those staying with ND have come out and stated their commitment loud and clear. Further, when you look at how ND is still recruiting, they are elite athletes. By the way, they are chasing guys who have ND as their finalists. How can this be if ND has fallen off the National radar?? Because kids realize that ND is still a great program, still has National TV exposure and most important provide a world-class education. Just for some clarity. ND still has a Top 20 recruiting class, so that is better than 100 other FBS schools. OMG, we are not losing all our recruits!!! That’s right.

IN CONCLUSION, ND still fills the stadium every single Saturday with a supportive fan base, which will return in 2011 with vigor. There are many schools, which have had struggles similar to ND this season. Schools like Texas are supposed to just reload and yet they are finding huge bumps in the road similar to ND. We will both be back sooner rather than later. Even during this historically bad, according to ESPN talking heads, somehow ND’s opponents are beating others worse than us. Further, somehow our “high school speed” defense has held most opponents below there season averages and some to almost season lows. With all these crumbling blocks, there are still many many recruits who will find ND a great home.

FOR ALL THE TALKING HEADS: ND IS STILL A GREAT INSTITUTION WHERE ATHLETES CAN EXCEL AND THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM WILL BE RELEVANT AND PROSPER FAR INTO THE FUTURE. GO IRISH!!!

On the attendance subject. I watched a little of the UNC-FSU game this weekend, and I couldn't help to notice that it was about 3/4 full at the most. We are sold out for Tulsa, meaning the interest for Irish football is still very high.

Re: Defense, other than Navy the defense has been statistically quite good overall.

We also have the same record as Texas. Kinda puts it in perspective.

Good post. Not to mention alot of other things that happened this weekend. Like Nebraska almost getting beat by Iowa State that did beat texas. Both Mich and Mich St games we were in to the very end. However yes our defense has done what you said but they are still average at best.

I think it's more of we've been bad for so long that's making it difficult to keep everything in a objective perspective. Coaching change + New System + Injuries + Wins/Losses + Mediocrity for a decade = Sky is falling down.

I still maintain that we will see a definite improvement next season is all facets of Notre Dame football. 8 wins.

If, though, it's a repeat of this season, then yeah, the sky may be falling.

When you look at the accomplishments of the Irish ND football and otherwise, you see hard work, brass balls, and everything else taking care of itself.

I'm frustrated too but every program goes through it's ebb and flow. Look at Alabama prominent in the 60-70's then fell off the face of the Earth, Ohio State, Miami, Florida State, all names we've seen in the polls, and we don't or didn't for a long time. We will rise again.

Nice post Jonesman. I agree with alot of what you said. I truly believe that ND will be a dominant force again in the near future. I see some positives, even though our W-L record tells a different story. All of us who are ND fans just want to win, and that is the bottom line. I don't think we are nearly as bad as some of us think either. We could play alot of "what if" games, but I think we just need to focus on getting better and hoping for some dramatic improvement next year. There is still alot of work to be done for sure, but I think over time, things will work out for us.

jonesman nice job man. brought a smile to my face.

a lot of the traditional powers are down this year, ND is not broken, the whole argument against ND is broken (as in broken record) they've been saying the whole ND can't get the players argument since Before Parseghian was the coach, the again before Lou, its a cyclical, this cycle has been a little longer and more painful because we're in it right now. but we'll get out of it and then what! Go Irish!

rational thinking?......more like rationizations. full stadium? didnt give up 67 points like Illinois (remember it was 45 after regulation)? c'mon. lets get a dose of reality about what the rest of the country has seen for the last 14 years.

how do you expect people to not say ND football is broken when it has been so for SO long.

of the last 14 seasons, 9 of them have been at or below .500. the bowl games they have made it to include losses with the following scores:

27-9
41-9
28-6
38-21
34-20
41-14

1997 7-6
1998 9-3
1999 5-7
2000 9-3
2001 5-6
2002 10-3
2003 5-7
2004 6-6

2005 9-3
2006 10-3
2007 3-9
2008 7-6

2009 6-6

2010 4-5

if people are off when they say ND football is broke, then id hate to see it broke.

It could be worse, we could have a record like the dallas cowboys. It could be worse than that, we could fire Kelly tomorrow and HIRE the cowboys coach! haha

I forgot to mention another interesting point I saw on one of the recruiting sites. Last year there were like 400 de-commitments during the recruiting season. So, As you can see there must have been lots of broken institutions last year with that many schools losing recruits. Go IRISH!!!

Nice post I agree 100%. if we can just beat USC this year that will put us on sweet note to end the season, and may get us into a bowl. That would give us a nice bump going into the off season and we can put all this crap behind us.

Great post, Jonesman. I totally agree with you. ND is not broken. I've seen a huge improvement in work ethic and intensity this year, especially on defense. We don't have as much natural talent as some teams do but we play hard. GO IRISH!

I know it isn't, I love the Irish, always have and always will, this is the normal ebb and flow of college football, and when they do return to the top 10, you and I can do the "I told you so" dance!

I know i have over reacted about a few things but i do believe that Kelly is making great strides for next year and beyond. He has struggled some with his playing calling i some how believe he is trying to get his players to trust him that extra mile. We need a big win this weekend to lock in some more recruits.

loses to Navy and Tulsa in back to back weeks...enough said!

Still better than a loss to Louisiana-Monroe on senior day and look where that coach and program are a couple years later!

To refresh your memory of how bad things got for Alabama and Saban at the end of the 2007 season...

Sunday, November 18, 2007 IAN R. RAPOPORT News staff writer

TUSCALOOSA - The players on the University of Alabama sideline began to head for the locker room before the clock struck 00:00. Most exited without a handshake for the opponent, and all exited with their chins hanging in the dirt.

When the Crimson Tide's humbling 21-14 loss to Louisiana-Monroe became official on Saturday, when the 92,138 at Bryant-Denny Stadium finished booing their team as it fled the field, even those who participated couldn't believe the result.

"Just looking at the scoreboard, seeing Louisiana-Monroe 21, University of Alabama 14 ... Kind of crazy. Real crazy," said Alabama receiver Matt Caddell.

Coach Nick Saban went a little further.

"I apologize to the people who support this program," said Saban, whose team committed four turnovers. "We represent a great institution here with a great tradition and a lot of pride. I'm certainly not pleased with the way we represented that tradition. We did all the things in this football game that get you beat."

Alabama did not score for the final 42 minutes, 42 seconds, clinching its first loss against a Sun Belt Conference team.

Instead, fullback Jimmy Johns lost a fumble with less than five minutes left. Instead, running back Terry Grant and the offensive line could not gain two yards on a third-and-2, nor on a fourth-and-2 with less than three minutes left. All three plays took place inside the 20.

Instead, 22 Alabama players are part of the sixth consecutive senior class to head into a losing locker room on senior day. Instead, it was the third loss in a row this season for Alabama (6-5).

"It's definitely not how I pictured having our last game end up at Bryant-Denny Stadium," senior cornerback Simeon Castille said.

The season is not over for Saban, whose team was coming off losses to LSU and Mississippi State. Saturday's Iron Bowl looms, as does a possible bowl appearance. Players quickly focused on the Tigers, while not allowing the lessons of Saturday's loss to dissipate.

"Hopefully, it'll serve as a wakeup call," center Evan Cardwell said. "You can't just show up and win a ballgame."

The regret was evident after players emerged from what they said was a quiet locker room.

"We're embarrassed right now," said quarterback John Parker Wilson, who was 21-of-31 for 246 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. "We don't expect to lose a game like this. We come out, we're Alabama, we got to win. But we're not doing that right now."

The only potential positive news took effect after the game. The five players who had been suspended four games for violations of textbook distribution policy were reinstated by the NCAA. Guards Marlon Davis, and Antoine Caldwell, running back Glen Coffee, and special teamers Chris Rogers and Marquis Johnson will be available in the Iron Bowl.

Meanwhile, receiver DJ Hall (three catches, 32 yards) was suspended for a half because of a violation of team rules.

All week, Saban had lambasted his team's focus in practice. He reminded players of upsets such as Appalachian State over Michigan.

"I hit the gamut of everything I could talk about relative to respecting your opponent," Saban said. It did not help.

The Crimson Tide marched 80 yards on its first drive, ending it with a 17-yard touchdown reception by Keith Brown.

But then Wilson threw his second interception on a pass that flew off receiver Will Oakley and into the arms of ULM's Quintez Secka. He returned it 42 yards down to the 1 and soon the game was tied at 7.

Another quick drive lasted 2:14 and gave Alabama the lead. Grant, who did not play in the first quarter, ran 12 yards to put Alabama ahead, 14-7.

The Warhawks marched right back, driving 80 yards and tying the game on a 13-yard run by Frank Goodin.

The half ended with the game tied at 14, and as Alabama exited the field, the fans showered the team with boos.

"You can help them stop booing," said Caddell, who made two catches for 30 yards. "You can make plays and score points. We didn't do that."

In the third, it got worse for the Tide. ULM went 65 yards in 10 plays, catching the Tide in a blitz on its 11-yard touchdown reception by Marty Humphrey to take a 21-14 lead with 3:05 left in the quarter.

By the time kicker Leigh Tiffin saw his 36-yard field goal attempt blocked by Jered Berry, it was becoming clear this was Alabama's nightmare.

"We just kept chipping away," Humphrey said.

That's where it stayed.

Johns' key fumble thwarted one drive. The failed conversions thwarted another. Alabama got the ball back with 56 seconds left on its own 37. Yet it gained just four yards before giving it back and taking the loss.

"The only way I know to get it right is to fix the things that are wrong, improve our team, and give us the best chance to play well next week," Saban said. "I'm not going to quit."

Great post jonesman. I've been to two games this year and am going up to help fill the stadium this weekend. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the first two and we are only 4and 5. By the way we have never lost a home game I've attended.
