I think its absurd to say that the point of the game is to match up the two best teams. What if Alabama last year had played 12 FCS teams, they would still have been the best (ignore OSU for the moment) yet would have not played anyone. Are you ok with that? The "best" is so subjective that it should be ditched entirely. We don't want the two "best" teams in the game we want the two most deserving teams.
Speak for yourself.
Personally I want to see the teams that are best and most deserving. You could make the case that an undefeated minor-conference school is "more deserving" - like, say, some Boise State squads - than an elite one-loss team like last year's Alabama. But I think we all know who the better team is.
For sure, part of being great in college football is simply being good enough to win week-in and week-out. The mental toughness required to win all your games is so rare. But it's not the only criteria. You also need to prove yourself against good teams - which Alabama did last year (they did beat Florida, Auburn and Arkansas). It helps if you can pass the eyeball test, too, which is why Oregon's #1 right now.
Anyway, I think the current system actually gets it right most years. I understand Okie State's gripe last year, but I think the results in the end showed that 'Bama was the best team in the country. And there's still three weeks of games left. Plenty of time to get it right this year, too.
The problem is that your "eye test" is different for everybody. How do you create a system worth anything by using something so subjective?
Alabama is a better team than Georgia, their loss was worse, and if you think Alabama's had a cupcake schedule well UGA's schedule makes theirs look like Murderer's Row. There might not be a more overrated team in the nation than UGA.What the **** is up with the AP voting AL #4, one spot ahead of Georgia? Voters were paid off after the game to make sure Bama stayed in the NCG discussion, despite the fact that they are the very definition of a paper tiger.
SEC Competition that Bama has played, through yesterday: 43-37, 21-33 in the SEC!! That includes Aggies, Tigers and Bulldogs records. They are the most overrated SEC team and that is saying something.

Wow just checked their schedule, they only had 2 legit games Scar( loss) and UF (win) and they finish out with Gergia southrn and GT, pathetic
I actually think that UGA might be more talented across the board than Alabama but the difference is discipline and coaching. Nick Saban is a far superior coach to Richt and his teams are usually disciplined and have few penalties. I just simply don't believe Richt is a "big game" coach either as he frequently gets outcoached in the big ones.Pathetic is the only word to describe Georgia's schedule (even their win over Florida required six turnovers.) Embarrassing might be another, but I don't think they realize that some schools actually play decent non-conference opponents (or even good teams in the other division of their conference).
But I'd think they probably lose to Alabama in the SEC title game, so they'll drop to 7th. Maybe 8th if it's a blowout.

Does anyone think that there's ANY chance that we hop ahead of Oregon by the slimmest of margins? It's hard to tell, but it looks like we may have closed the gap by a LITTLE bit in the human polls (points wise). Do you guys think that Bama losing will ultimately help us gain ground on Oregon in the computers (i.e. a 1 loss Bama still ranks higher than an undefeated Oregon, but falls behind an undefeated ND), or will it just be a wash?
Like many of you, I think it will all work itself out, but I sure would love to see the #2 next to Notre Dame for the next week
EDIT: After further review, Oregon actually improved their lead in the human polls (by 8 pts in the Harris and 4 pts in the USA Today), but it still looks like the computer polls have a chance to help us out. I don't have a great understanding of how all of the individual computer polls rank though, so we will just wait and see I guess.
When do the scores come out for the computers?
Which dorm is it that lights a light on the top of their building when ND is #1?
Also, if we jump either team.. it will be after the USC game. Kelly needs to RUN IT UP on USC.... If we're sitting at 3 after USC, might as well book tickets to Pasadena...
where would you have put Bama?
It will get settled in Atlanta but Alabama is a better team than UGA. UGA got embarrassed by USCe by 4 touchdowns. Also, they have the easiest schedule of any "contender" I've ever seen. Just take a look at their schedule one time. I know we all rag on Alabama for their creampuff schedule but it looks like a crucible compared to UGA.BEHIND UGA, AT LEAST. Not that it really matters cuz they will settle it on the field in ATL. Just seemed hypocritical to me. Certainly in front of FL.
If (when) we beat USC, I'd prefer to see Swarbrick lobbying for the NC game. It's more in the AD's lane than a coach's. ADs negotiate schedules, sit down with conference officials, etc.
With that said, I could see a split NC if 2 teams finish undefeated. The AP poll could very well vote ND #1 if ND handily beats Bama (or some other SEC team) while Oregon and KSU battle it out in a close game.
