I feel bad for you. I have never had this happen but a woman I work with did and it took forever to get straight. I hope you get through this quickly pal.

This has happened to me several times. When I traveled extensively for work it happened a couple times a year. Fortunately AmEx was always on top of it and I never had any out of pocket expenses.

I have been told that once they get your number they actually make a card with your info on it. Thieves have gotten more sophisticated.

Hope you can get it straightened out quickly without it costing you too much.

Sorry to hear about that. I went through this twice already this year but the bank I use caught it and shut things down right away.

Not out that much money but its the inconvenience of not having access to my money...and not knowing how/where they got it...already begun the process of disputing them

Getting ripped off sucks, in any form. Someone smashed out my car window the other night; they were doing a rash of smash-and-grabs in a parking garage. I'm driving around with plastic where my window used to be because some clown is too lazy to answer a help wanted ad.

I mistakenly used my card at a Mickey-D's that I had been warned about. It was late, the kids were bitchy hungry. I stopped. And I paid. It only takes someone about ten seconds to get all of the information they need, (with their own swiper, and seeing your security code.)

Also, trolling neighborhoods for Wireless networks with lax security settings is big business, even with all the warnings out there.

I have all of my cards set to use a code, or pin, or something if they are swiped outside of the area I normally operate. Having to enter four digits is no problem for me, at having the convenience of when (not if) my card is breached, it is put on a cut off list the first time it is used without the back-up code.

Other than the one time I had them make a run at my card, all across the South, I have been called twice and told I am being issued a new card. Like I said, it is now caught for my card(s) on the first try.

Good Luck!

Twice in the last 4 months my bank has contacted me because a place I used my card at had a security breach. They replaced my card both times and no money was ever taken. Yesterday at a family members house for a cookout his bank called to notify him his card was frozen. There were 2 charges, not his, from earlier that weekend, and someone at that moment was on the other side of the state attempting to spend $600 at a liquor store. His card had never left his wallet. Similar things have happened to friends of mine as well. I usually only use my card and never cash. It allows me easier tracking of my spending. But that changes today. Cash for anything I pay for in person. And weekly, or more, I'll be looking over my account and ensure all seems legit.

Good luck!

This has happened to me a few times. My advice:

DO NOT use your debit card at gas pumps. Everybody does because it's convenient, but they are notorious for being compromised. Basically, with evey debit transaction, the cashier has to press a button to clear the payment. Once that's done, the number is erased from hackers. When stores have massive accounts compromised, it's because the people aren't doing that. Gas stations don't clear those transactions in a timely manner, so your account dangles in a dangerous area for a long amount of time.

You can use your debit card, but you need to run it as credit rather than using your PIN. When you use your PIN, it goes through the ATM network. When you run it as credit, it goes through the Visa (or whomever) network, which gives you the same fraud protections as a credit card transaction.

This happens fairly often as I do a report for it probably 1-2 times a week. I'm in a decent size city so I can only imagine in a larger population. The biggest thing I've seen is gas pumps. My wife and I have had this happen twice this year already. I've had mine done a few times in the past, mostly from online stores. Hers was because of a gas pump and had $400 worth of Starbucks gift cards charged. Mine was $1k in flights from Ontario (I'm in Alabama) to Jamaica...I can only assume mine was RFID'd while in the airport in Montego Bay two days prior.

I would advise paying cash as much as possible these days and staying away from sketchy websites to purchase items. Just be smart about it. At this point, I'm starting to look into RFID blocking wallets to cut my risk even more.

I'm going to Dublin and then London on my honeymoon, and all of the recommended international travel gear is RFID-blocking. I had no idea that was even a thing, despite working with RFID tags daily.

It's crazy what can be done these days in terms of mining an individual's info.

My wife and I have had this happen several times. I had my wallet stolen once and then had our card numbers compromised at different businesses at different times. It is a huge pain in the ass. I have never incurred any expenses that weren't mine, but the inconvenience is significant.

Now, we use cash or prepaid Visa cards. Only time I use our ATM is when I go to the bank to make a deposit or take out cash. Otherwise, our bank cards stay in the safe. Online purchases are only made with prepaid credit cards. I also keep fraud alerts on all three of the credit reporting bureaus at all times just in case. Also, with my banks, I keep alerts on my accounts so anytime a purchase is made, I am notified immediately via email and text.

I'm a federal employee! I feel pretty confident that they will take care of all of my personal information So I won't ever have to worry about this kind of thing!

Question about the RFID part. Would carrying your wallet in the front help as well. I assume most would scan your ass as they walk by.
Aslo, I'm not well informed with the whole RFID thing, do all cards have it?

Some like larger ass

At first, quick glance, I thought "lager" rather than "larger." Maybe I spend too much time perusing the "What Are You Drinking" thread.

Maybe there's a correlation as well as a causation.

Don't quote me on this as it may not be exact, but I think the scanner's can pick up anywhere from a few inches away to 2-300 feet depending on the scanner/antenna, etc. Sadly, I don't think carrying in front would help much if at all.
