I mean to state the obvious, it's all about race. Calling a group of largely black student athletes "unintelligent thugs" has racial overtones. Even if you don't mean it from that place, other people are going to take it that way. Calling them some combination of "wanna-be tough small-dick fair-weather douchebags" probably covers 90% of the same bases.
