Honest question -- Is it the players? Or, is it the scheme? I'm not sure at this point. And, I'm not saying Tenuta isn't a good coach; I'm just wondering if our gameplanning is working. Big Risk = Big Reward?... sometimes. Other times it's just risk.

I see undersized, slow D-lineman and some undersized LB's too. The scheme hurts our pass defense (blitzing and not getting pressure puts our DB's at a disadvantage).

We need run support, and a pass rush(without having to blitz all the time) that starts with the DL.

we just need a massive fat guy in the middle of the d-line lol

someone that needs to be double teamed so it frees up the other players.

If Ronald Powell visits for the UW game how he is planning and is blown away, and we win 10 games, our Dline concerns would be solved for good.

I honestly think it is the scheme. The soft zone we played yesterday was terrible. Their QB didnt throw the ball down the field all that much. He picked us apart in the 8-10 yard range and we were giving way too much room on the outside. Now if this is a result of not wanting to get burned by the blitz, then we need to scale back on the blitzing.

There is talent in the secondary. Way too much to give up 300+ to MSU. Our run defense was much better yesterday. We only gave up 105 yards.

I just dont think we are playing the right scheme for the talent that we have. Tenuta needs to adjust to what he has.

This is not going to be a GREAT defense. But it still has enough talent to be decent and not be shredded every week.

Kerry Neal playing DL....Dude is a linebacker, come on.

Who is our big stud D-linemen? how many sacks do they have? (crickets and pindrops)

I'll give KLM a pass, although he has not been spectacular...

Darrin Walls....nuff said (I dont think he is as bad as he appears to look, I think the scheme is hanging him out to dry)

We need lineman. We need pressure without having to blitz EVERY play; then maybe some DB's like Walls wont look like Elvis 'Toast' Patterson out there, and those 'blitzing' LB's would be available for run/pass support (because they're not blitzing every play)

to answer your question DRI (and PADOMERNUT), i think the issue starts with the players (mostly lack of dline), and is amplified by the scheme.

We need Chris Zorich, Paul Grasmanis!!!!

I think it is because we have young DLmen that are not experienced!

I also don't think the DB's and the LB's are playing all that great!

The defense is only as strong as the weakest point.

I hate to say this but the Defense is a year away because of recruiting!!

It's the personel.
Ian Williams , bless his heart, is not a game changer. Good guy and plays his ass off but he would be a solid backup at most places

kerry Neal is way undersized and has never played to his potential

Ethan Johnson is undersized for DT and is only in his second year. It seemshe is playing out of position and that is due to our personel

KLM is playing in his 3rd game, lots of potential but he is going to have some growing pains as well

John Ryan has played pretty well but who would have expected him to be our best d-lineman so far this year

Alot of it is youth. The 08 class was the first truly defensive class and we need too many sophmores to step up. Some are notready and others are going to make stupid plays because of youth.

Strength, conditioning, speed, and agility appear to be the biggest problems for the whole team. It is especially glaring on defense.

I disagree with some saying it is the players; I believe it is the scheme. We have talent on the defense and the D-line is putting pressure on the QBs. But when you blitz all game, it wears on you quick.

We do have talent.

Tenuta has more 4 and 5 star players on the current Notre Dame defense than he ever had in his entirestint at Georgia Tech

The difference is that those 3 star lineman at Ga Tech sat for 2-3 years to learn the system and work on technique. Our guys have just been thrown in and have to learn on the job.

Was Cave playing D?

He was credited with an assisted tackle on MSU's 3rd drive:

I agree with that. The experience from HS to the college level is on a faster playing plane as well and being thrown to the lion's den can be a rude awakening. As much as I want it this year, I believe our defense next year should be pretty freaken stellar. Would you agree?

I don't know about stellar but better. Another year will give guys like Ethan Johnson, Filer, and Te'o to grow but it all comes down to the d-line. They should play better with another year.

Te'o is unsure about whether or not he will go. But we do have talent and all ittakes is for that lightbulb to click. Look at our o-line now.
