This really is kind of a sad day in my opinion. It's sad to see the end of our Shuttle program after 30 years. I watched the first lift off back in 1981 and am happy to have watched the final one this morning. Really hope we get a replacement vehicle for the future here in the next few years. I don't like the idea of being dependent on another country to launch our own astronauts into space.

I remember getting up when it was still dark to watch the launches on TV. It was such a huge deal back then and, as a kid, I was blown away watching the shuttles take off. Whenever they would land in California at Edwards we would try to go see the landings. Those were some of the most incredible experiences as well.

Just recently, my wife and I were up in the mountains and we saw what we thought was a plane, but it was going super fast. Faster than anything I had ever seen. Sure enough, the sonic boom soon followed. I thought, "That must be the shuttle." Sure enough I found out later, due to bad weather in Florida, the shuttle was diverted to California.

It is truly the end of an era. I also hope there will be another vehicle to take the place of the shuttle.

When I lived in south Florida we could see it from our backyard. It's really cool to hear the sonic boom as it leaves the Earths atmosphere.

It WAS really cool to hear the sonic boom as it left the Earth's atmosphere.

It's extinct now.

I watched the live stream. I have watched every launch since the Challenger Mission. I remember praying for the Columbia mission to end smoothly, and it didn't. It was great to be able to witness some great history and share in the sadness as well. NASA is a great program, I hope to see it come back someday.

Agree. Neil Degrasse Tyson tweeted that if your watched the NASA program in reverse it would look like a triumphant escalation that put us on the moon. Instead its just a sad decline of a once proud program

But it's change you can believe in.

How is Bruce Willis going to get into space to stop incoming asteroids/comets now? Seriously, I hate to see the shuttle missions end.

He's going to have to blast his way into China to commandeer a rocket.

As if saving the world wasn't hard enough already...

Hadn't heard about Mars but the Mexican Space Program a.k.a. Reconquista already has Space Stations in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, ... "all 57 states".

I wonder if they use 'corpse-men' in their program....
