JDM f'ing rocks
This series needed a kick in the ass (or a bat to the head). They got more.

Yeah the stakes just got raised like crazy. First time in the series I've felt like our group was legit afraid and their lives were threatened as a whole.

Exactly. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Looking forward to see what things look like when Carol and Morgan meet the new group.

So was that what happened in the comic book (JDM stopping hime?), or did Rick go through with it.

My prediction is Abe and Glen tries to stop it and gets killed

Somebody read some spoilers (basically)

Amen. Been real excited to see what the introduction of Negan was going to do here. I too felt like the show needed a little kick in the ass, and Negan is the way to do it. Negan was going to make or break the show going forward, and so far JDM is batting 1000 (Pun intended). He's got just enough charisma, attitude, and creep factor to make Negan come to life. Things will be interesting for awhile.

We're supposed to hate Negan but that character and JDM are awesome. Pretty sadistic yet funny how he cracks jokes about the people he just beat to death. This season is going to be fun.

I was thinking this too that the first group was much smaller than all the other groups they came across afterwards. I was just curious who that guy was. Did he come from the Hilltop or another place. Didn't look Alexandrian to me.

My first hunch was that it was Abraham. Just surprised, if it is, that they just pushed back his death 3 episodes. Why not just stick to the comic and kill him then...

So as much as I like Glen I think it would be fantastic if the show sticks to the comics for this one scene as everyone has said, Glen's death will be felt by everyone.

I guess i was right...sort a.

I do like that they are "resetting" the stage. It's starting to fall a lil more in line with the comics. They got rid of Abraham who overstayed his welcome, thankfully, a few more episodes than he should have and they stuck to the comics and got rid of Glen.

I like how people were probably thinking it's Glen because they will stick to the comics, then Negan bashes Abraham thinking that Glen is safe. Little do they know that Daryl isn't part of the comics so they can sneak that part in with him punching Negan and Negan setting another example that he is a man of his word and ends up killing Glen making everyone spit or choke on their popcorn.

The gruesomeness of the head bashes were literally sick but also awesome.

Sorry if that spoiled anything but honestly if you haven't watched the show yesterday yet, you shouldn't be in this thread today.

I figured it would be Glenn that got it. Season 6 was almost annoying at how many times they teased his death and also his time at Alexandria was nothing but painful. After his death scene ( and the final scene at the dinner table.....omg) he is probably one of the most tragic characters I have encountered in cinema/comics. I heard rumors that two people were getting clipped so I figured it would be Glenn and a lesser character. I did get it kind of right that Negan was going to show Rick just how bad he screwed up . Did not think he was going to do all that though and literally break Rick lol.

I figured Abe would have carried on though. He was one of my favorites. I think Eugene and or Sasha's story is kind of run its course though so I was surprised Abe got instead of them.

Do you think the rest of the season will be relatively deathless? I bet we get a couple deaths, but nobody that will be missed too much.

I think one or both of Sasha and Rosita are definitely going to die. Aaron has a good chance to die. Beyond that, I think everyone should be safe.

Additionally, do we think the Negan storyline goes beyond this season and next? In other words, will it span 3 seasons or more?

Depends. We have Carol and Morgan still out there and they are not at Alexandria (neither of them are in the comics at this point). Rick will still have to deal with the guy/people at the Hilltop because he took half their stuff and did not kill Negan, Maggie (and baby) are still unknown, then there is King Ezekiel....

I agree that there will a few minor deaths this season. This previous episode kind of reset the TWD world. It is a whole new world really.

I think Negan is here to stay. There will be a pre-Negan Walking Dead and now a they've transitioned into this whole new era. The deaths will reverberate for many seasons to come, imo. The possibilities are endless at this point.

Unrelated: What was the scene in Rick's visionary flashback where there rest of the group were getting hit in the head with the bat? What was that all about? Because clearly that didn't happen.

I think he was just imagining what would happen if he didn't obey Negan.

I know they filmed deaths for every character so they probably thought they might as well use those shots.

Agree. I f you look at the progression it kind of goes like...
-first season or two was basically individuals/small bands/groups of people just barely surviving.
- then larger groups just barely surviving
- then the beginnings of community (Wooberry/Prison)
- then actual small communities (Alexandria/ Hilltop)
- now we get large scale communities (Kingdom and the Survivors). Up until now it has been relatively small scale battles or skirmishes. I think we start to to see many more large scale conflicts as the size of the groups increase

Negan doesn't seem like a smart business guy, I'ma make your group find shit for me but first let me take the only 3 capable guys you have Rick. I'm sure you'll do fine with ol one eye, mullet man, and scurdy cat.

should have shown #1 in final scene last season...it would have made #2 getting it too start this season that much more of a punch to the gut.
we would have thought #1 was the worse of the Lucille Vampire Bat...and then BAM! down goes #2!

comic readers please don't give any hints/insights on Ezekiel as we go forward thx!

When you guys freak out over Daryl and say he's can't go, is that because it's assumed Rick would never go?

Because Rick is hands down the #1 character IMO. I don't get the Daryl love. He's probably my 3rd favorite character after Rick and Michone. Him and Glen were both about the same to me. I don't read the comics but have seen every episode of the show.

I think he consciously chose Abe exactly because Abe is the type of person that would want to fight Negan and was strong enough to do it down the line. I think he purposely wanted to eliminate a physical threat.

Glenn died because Negan wanted to break the rest of the group emotionally. He could tell that Glenn was important to the group.

So I was mad at them last season for leaving us hanging but my angst during the first half of this first episode made me realize how perfect this was. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and after Abe was knocked off I started to relax and then BAM. Heart could not stop racing the entire rest of the episode. I think doing it any other way would have been less impactful.

Yes, I assume Rick is never going to die until perhaps the end of the series. We knew it wasn't going to be Rick anyway because Negan specifically said to take Carl's other eye out if Rick did anything to interfere. Therefore, Rick and Carl were the the two "safe" characters.

I definitely think we'll get a few more deaths this season, but I think things will be relatively quiet for a bit. I think Alexandria will respect Negan's power after the showing last night, especially with Daryl being captured.

Saw this on Coral's Twitter

Or is he? Negan took out probably the strongest member of Rick's group and who he deemed was the glue of the group (Aside from Rick). That sent a pretty powerful message: don't mess with us. He had to make sure they lost their will to fight so they didn't become a problem in the future (Although like any conflict, I'm sure the group will rise up at some point, otherwise where's the happy ending?) So, if anything, Negan was ensuring his own survival by killing who he did.

This is strange, coming from you.
I mean, most of the Daryl love comes from the ladies that think he's sexy.

I will say this, I hope the main core of characters remain. If this show kills a bunch of people off and transitions into a new cast, I'll struggle to care enough to keep watching. Character development is big with me. Comparatively, GoT killed off many main characters, but basic core characters also still remain to the current season. I, as a viewer/fan, appreciate that. I don't like starting over all the time with characters.

IIRC, Negan was taunting Rick about killing his right hand man. I think Negan believed Abe was his right hand. Maybe that was symbolic in more than one way?

In the comics Glenn died and Ricks right hand is physically cut off. In the TV show Glenn dies and Negan removes Rick's metaphorical right hand ( at least Negan thinks Abe was his right hand)

got it thx.

so in our little corner of TWD world, we now have:

Negan and his "Survivors"

and

Ezekiel and his "Kingdom"?

with

Rick et al as subjects in the former and Carol/Morgan in the latter (and happy to be there? at least for now?)
