Hot take: the legalization of sports gambling is going to elevate MLS (and soccer as a whole) to new heights in the US.

total game changer for sports now. States gotta get on it quickly so they can cash in. Be interested to see if Leagues will allow clubs/teams take on gambling companies are core sponsors. It's being debated in the UK to have them banned because of the rise in gambling addictions etc

I don't think that's a hot take at all. It's going to elevate popularity and viewership of all sports.

I think the NFL and college football stand to benefit the most, though. The most accessible and visible sports will now have average viewers with even more incentive and reason to tune in.

You can't pick up 6+ soccer games per Saturday/Sunday on local TV networks like you can with the NFL and college football.

I always found that a bit peculiar clubs were allowed to have sponsors by gambling companies. I think I just counted 8 of the 20 prem teams had them as their primary kit sponsors.

You know who benefits more than even the sports leagues. Platforms like ESPN+ where you can watch pretty much any game at any time.

Not for soccer though. ESPN has virtually no broadcast rights at the moment except random Champions League Matches, and they share MLS rights with Fox and I think Univison.

NBC sports has EPL.

Bein Sports has Serie A, La Liga, Turkish Super Lig, French Ligue 1, whatever the belgian league is.

Fox has Bundesliga

its either gambling sites or pay day loan companies which is equally depressing.

Yeah was more going off Lion said about other sports not just soccer, and meant those type of streaming platforms as a whole and ESPN + came to mind since it's newest.

Either way, don't see any thing bad coming from this, other than gambling addictions.

Oh my bad, I totally missed that part.

You're absolutely right though. The obscure womens collegiate softball that ESPN+ streams at 1pm on Wednesdays, will now have sports books for it.

I wonder which states will get on board. New Jersey, obviously... but which others? And will online betting now be made legal?

Here is a good breakdown from ESPN -- Gambling - Ranking every U.S. state by its current position in legalizing sports betting

Looks like it almost certainly will be in NJ:

Many bills are encouraging mobile and online betting options. Without these options, gambling advocates warn that bettors will still turn to offshore accounts and illegal bookmakers.

New Jersey sports books will be able to take bets via phone or computer, but not right away. There will be a licensing process that could take weeks — possibly a few months — before books will be able to take bets remotely. Even then, only intrastate wagers will be permitted.

For sure on the content-heavy add-on platforms.

NFL Sunday Ticket is already a huge "niche" market, especially since it comes in a lot of introductory cable packages for a year or with a discounted rate, but it's going to get a huge bump from football fans that will take the next step to consistent betting (even for people that will bet "for fun" and throw down small, controlled bets each week).

My original point was about pulling in some of the average folks who would have never thought about betting before. The already-accessible sports are going to see a surge from all kinds of people tuning in to keep up with their weekly bets since it will be relatively easy to do so, even without the add-ons like ESPN+ or Sunday Ticket.

Also of note: Gonna move these to the Gambling thread.

Moved some posts in from the soccer thread concerning the legalization of sports gambling.

Gonna make this "The Gambling Thread."

I've bet on 2 sports events in my life. One on horse racing last year, and once on Alabama in the 2009 championship.

Sports betting seemed legal to me. I'm probably the only person who doesn't get the significance of this "break through".

Interesting, the intrastate thing is going to be tough to swallow/enforce. How many people are simply going to run proxy services of some sort?

It's very difficult. You can already online gamble in New Jersey, and while I am sure there are some ways around it, it's nearly impossible to even check your account the second your out of state. They make you install a program that proves your location that pretty much makes proxies obsolete (not sure how it works so I am sure if you really wanted, you can get around it, but seems like too much for the average sports bettor).
