Staff and players did a much better job this week than last week in these situations. Don't know what else lies ahead as far as packages go, but consider this:

Stanford has a short yardage package with 9 linemen on the field. Can't any team do something similar, including ND? Picture a loaded backfield with some beef paving the way for a running back.

I don't know about you guys but watching a two tight end set with a lone running back getting stuffed is infuriating.

Not as infuriating as 3rd and short and an empty backfield.

I think the big difference with Stanford is how stout their TE are at blocking. Ours make a lot of mistakes on it.

You're right. Big difference. So why do we keep trying to rely on them? Stanford puts backup guards and tackles in the backfield as lead blockers and they rarely get stuffed on second or third and short.

How about Power I backfield with Utupo, Harrell (or even Heggie or Hegarty), and any running back? If you can't get a yard with that, you've got serious issues up front.

It's certainly a good idea. Although, I thought we did a much better job against OK with the Hendrix package. It's just that he doesn't look very comfortable in the backfield. It's a shame really.

Wasn't it the first game of last season that Kelly used a jumbo in the backfield and after it misfired, he dropped it?

third down on offense does not scare me as much as third down on defense. If we face a tempo team and get caught with our base package, we are toast in the slot match-up with our LB.

You can't play-action with an empty backfield. And you can't consistently convert 3rd and 3 without play action. Therefore, we can't convert 3rd and 3.

We haven't tried to line up and pound anyone all season. We've become a finesse team and that's really disappointing given the personnel we have on offense. If you can't trust your team to pound it for 2-3 yards when you need it then you're not a good team because good teams can get 3 yards without throwing the football.

The blame for this lies squarely on BK and Martin. I try not to be too critical of the staff, but our offensive game plan has sucked all season.

It's a mindset and it starts in the spring.
You can't just come out and same we're a power running team.
Stanford has that ingrained in their minds from day one.
They don't come out in the shotgun on 3rd and short and it takes a Herculean effort to stop them.
It very frustrating for me because we attract the same type of athletes.
This metro-sexual offense only works when you have a mobile qb... or at least an accurate one.

This is absolutely on target. I don't understand how those two continue to roll out ****** game plans that play against our strengths. They had a fair amount of time to tweak the offense for Rees and they didn't.
