Ok so would these contingencies even be?

I only really recall us being in on Bear Bachmeier and - very very briefly - the kid from Massachusetts who blew up for a week and committed to Clemson.

Bachmeirer is the only possible move I can think of and he fell quite a bit in the rankings for some reason. If not him, I think they'll have a lower rated prospect that Gino is high on lined up, unless he can pull a rabbit out of a hat and shock everyone with a flip.

The thing about Deuce that people don’t say enough: if his commitment is soft now, how will he feel about redshirting as a frosh? Chances he beats out both of Carr and Angeli/Minchey is slim.

Yes, but the problem is we could possibly lose 2/3 of those three next year as well.

This is partly a perception thing. Losing Deuce would hurt. Losing Deuce after fumbling away virtually every remaining top of the board target which also followed losing our highest ranked commit... That's a kick in the nuts after you already got your teeth knocked out.

Don’t disagree with either of above. However is perception really worse than if he never plays and transfers? Later bad perception better than sooner? Here’s to hoping ND goes to playoffs, wins a couple games, and offense looks good doing it. Speaking of curing perception ills…

Is this recruitment better/worse than Dante Moore situation if he transfers after fall 2025/spring 2026? More wasted time then fall 2024?

Love it if he’s here. If it’s daily hours of convincing until June 2026…maybe not the place.

Worst offensive class in recent history and it isn’t even remotely close.

The 2019 class would like a word with you. Kyren was the only good thing to come out of that class on the offensive side of the ball.

Brendan Clark was the QB, and Cam Hart and Kendall Abdur-Rahman were the wideouts. KAR didn't record a single stat in two years at Western Kentucky, and played last year at McKendree U (a school that I just found out existed). I can't fault Clark for getting hurt, obviously. At least Cam absolutely played great at another position, but cue the old jokes about how CB's are just WR's who can't catch. ;)

Olmstead was so badly evaluated that he transferred to FCS, Carroll is in Minnesota, Kristofic is done with football and didn't sniff the draft, and Correll is at NC State. So, that is precisely one single major contributor on offence out of the whole class. At least Kyren was a blast to watch.

The 2020 class wasn't better by leaps and bounds. Myer and Tyree were awesome to watch, but another big fat zero at WR. Jordan Johnson didn't record a single catch in college football until last year at [checks notes] [checks notes again] [heavy, depressed sigh] Iowa Western Community College, Jay Brunelle had four catches in two years at Yale and is playing for BC this year, and we all know how great X Watts turned out...on the other side of the ball. Del Alexander should be relegated to coaching Pop Warner football for the rest of his life.

2021 and 2022 were small but positive steps in the right direction.

Say what you will about the transfer portal (and I've said plenty), but ND's bacon would be absolutely cooked this year without it.

Given Carr in the class ahead of him and various circumstances (distance, Ole Miss/Auburn tampering in the portal) the odds of him ever starting a game for us were never all that great.
But you never get the chance if you don’t show up to begin with.

Except he wouldn’t be playing with most of those guys anyway. He’d be playing with the 26 and later skill players.
Yes he should, he’s not staying in college 5 years
He won’t be playing with the 25 skilled players due to their lack of talent and inability to see the field nor because of their class year

The idea has been, since Deuce is pretty raw as far as his mechanics and understanding the game, he would redshirt, sit another year tops and be ready as a junior. He's never screamed "game ready QB" and that's still the case now. It's his insane athleticism and the high ceiling that comes with it that makes him a draw. And he's actually said he understands that himself and didn't have a problem with getting developed while he waited to take over the starting job somewhere. Not sure if things have changed for him, but the chances of him being ready as a freshman, even sophomore, aren't high imo no matter where he goes

If Deuce leaves the class at any point it's a huge loss, no other way to spin it. If he is developed right, he could potentially be a generational Cam Newton type of QB at the college level. ND really doesn't get talent like his at the QB position very often. And that's not even getting into how Deuce is essentially Denbrock's prototype QB, a Jayden Daniels type of athlete that just needs his mechanics and decision making refined to reach his highest potential. No way around it, losing Deuce could be the difference between competing for championships a few yrs from now and more of the same ole, same ole. You can't find athleticism like his in the portal at QB and there isn't even another QB in this class that measures up to his testing numbers. Obviously that doesn't guarantee he'll be a success, but again, Denbrock's been great with developing his kind of talent.

I used to think this, but he performed so damn well at every camp this summer. Outperformed many “polished” guys at pure passing drills. Obviously not a game, but have to think Deuce no longer thinks he a “project” based on his success.

Yea, he may have changed how he sees himself, but that's how he's been viewed and he's just started getting coached up, so he may be jumping the gun a bit. I'm not saying he hasn't improved, but the college game is a different level than what he's been playing at. I don't think anything would make him ready as a freshman, sophomore I could see if he continues to pick things up quickly

Maybe let's not sell him on being the next Cam Newton lmao

Wiltfong says that the momentum is with Auburn right now.

From Deuce’s father:

“Me and my wife visited Auburn and Ole Miss this past weekend since we never got a chance to explore other schools that have showed interest in Deuce so we could sit down as a family and be sure ND was the perfect place for him,” Knight’s father Justin said. “Cause we talking about the next four years of his life.
