Every dollar he gets comes at the expense of another player or position, and I think ND actually has some leverage here.

He can stay, get a good pay bump, play alongside Moore and Schuler, get coached up by Mickens in a system he already knows, and be in the NFL after next year - or he can chase a few extra bucks somewhere else and start from scratch.

He would be crazy to leave. ND should use it to their advantage and pay him less than market without being insulting. It's a dirty business.

Does it, really? At this point, the money only seems limited by one's imagination.
I wouldn't mess around here.
Yes we need to invest in some DLs. And yes he would be making a foolish move by going elsewhere, for all the reasons you cite. But college kids make foolish moves all the time. Based on various comments here over the years, Tae seems to come from a poorer background, he has a kid, and he may feel the need to make money now more acutely than some. Some other program will offer that money. More to the point he's one of the best players on our defense. There's zero reason to lose him. So let's just not.

That there could be the deciding factor.

He’s going to have a lot of picks when that front four is crushing passers.
This is where I’m like, ‘I think they may be the favorites to win it all for the first time since I was ten,…’ because our defensive front is going to be almost as legit as the secondary (calm down, I said almost) ,… it’ll lead to a lot of yummy turnovers. Think Shane Walton, Vontez Duff era plays

So glad he put in the work in order to commit. Will always be pulling for a local Ft. Wayne kid, but the effort he put in before he hit the field, the sky is the limit for this young man. Absolutely love paying homage to Jaylon with the #9.
This. Guy is so easy to root for when you know how he worked for it.

He could easily have a monster season 6+ int season and be an early draft entrant this time next year.

Tae Johnson is a better NFL prospect than Caleb Downs. MY COLUMN:

- He’s likely faster, more explosive, significantly wider wingspan, will be heavier. Has shown similar tackling ability, better ball hawk. Downs advanced mind has a ceiling at some point.

Basically as soon as he showed he could tackle, in my mind he became a future first round pick.

Agree 100% I think he’s the first safety taken in 2027. O’Brien then fills right in.

Love them both, Downs is a tackle magnet and with his versatility can be used in the box or as a bucket but is best in the box. He has elite awareness and excels at denying leverage in off coverage. A true Gamer. Tae is an artist in coverage with legit 5* WR hands and length, smarts to pick up QB tendencies and jump routes, covers a lot of ground and flies downhill to the ball as a willing tackler. Can easily defend against slot guys and some TEs. Only weaknesses at this point are his size which he's adding to (203+) and his ability to engage with blockers in the run game.
