Gave Hillman a 88, gave Mooney the PWO offer a 86.

The heavy hitter safety types haven't panned out lately at ND. Ajavon, Walters, Derrick Allen etc.
I don't think any of them are the level of athlete that Hillman is.

Closest is Allen, but the only thing he compares favorably with Hillman is size. You watch their films however, and it's apparent that Hillman is a much more fluid athlete able to get out of his breaks much faster than Allen ever did.

We'll see with Walters. I don't think he's a great athlete, but he certainly showed something early in his career and we'll have the chance to move up the chart next year.

Can't believe we're already at the "reasoning" stage of recruiting. Been a wild year!

Before we brand him the type of athlete that Kyron Jones is, check out where he tested.

DB needs bodies. Especially since Golden looks unlikely to ever employ a Lea style Rover.

I don't know about that.

I think it's a combination of the teams we've played and the personnel we currently have to employ.

ND has played mostly teams that play primarily 11 personnel and a couple that run out 4 wide pretty frequently. And ND doesn't have a JOK-level Rover, while their nickel, Bracy, is the most consistently productive player on the defense.

If someone like Sneed ends up making the leap as a sophomore, we may see ND play a lot more Rover next season.

Still don’t see it. Think about it, who’s a “Rover” moving forward? MAYBE Sneed. 1 guy doesn’t make a position room. Stopped calling them Rovers already and they use Sniper at practice. Ziegler repping at ILB from the jump. M’Pemba a DE was the only guy they pitched at “Rover” on the trail. Ausberry told WILL. Golden reps Nickel and Dime much more. Future of the D is a 3 - 3 - 5 with a overhanging rush OLB.

A guy that coached linebackers at the highest level where a Roger doesn’t exist. I guess I can see why he scrapped that’s position.

Sniper is a term that goes back to Freeman's Cincy days. That's the term he used for that 3rd hybrid LB spot.

It's really not much different than what Lea implemented with JOK at the Rover spot. It's generally a hybrid DB/LB, and can be subbed for a Nickel if need be. We saw that with Lea in 2018, when the Rover barely saw any action and instead, we saw Nick Coleman in that Nickel spot.

Your point stands though, because we do need bodies for that Sniper role and generally, they're going to come from the DB spots, like JOK was coming out of high school. As for who would man that hybrid spot, I think we're in the right place, because Hillman seems to be the perfect fit for that Sniper role.

The ISD guys were speculating thats where Clarence Lewis is headed next year. SS, closer to the LOS type

Recruiting is, quite literally, a 24/7/365 process. Never stops.

At least it shouldn't anyway.

I have almost completely given up on trying to figure out what the right types are for our defense. There are so many different types of defenses out there now that I think its more about fitting the defense to the players than fitting the players to the defense.

We don't have a true rush DE? Fine. Against pass heavy teams, use an overhang LB. Against run heavy teams, use a second big end.

We don't have a true hybrid LB? Fine. Against pass heavy teams, use a third CB. Against run heavy teams, drop a third safety in the box.

As long as we recruit the hybrid players, I don't really care what they call it. I just think the recruiting and use of hybrid players is too important for the prospect and program. We need more of it.

His offensive film jumps out. Less impressed on the defensive side. Kid is a no doubt stud athlete though. Heard one of the ib guys comp him as a Jalen Elliott type, which seems about right. Jalen was an excellent hs qb.

Yeah, he's not very polished at safety but his athleticism really shows in the offensive highlights and he's more than willing to hit people. He just needs some experience and coaching up. I wonder if he ends up at linebacker?
