If ND doesn't get Gray, I think they will be ok. As much as I'd love to have him, the DB class for 23 is gonna be elite regardless if he follows Steeples.

I take back what I said about maybe passing on him. Although we're in with some elite DBs and already have 3 committed, you don't turn down corners that OSU wants and is a 4-star across the board. Maybe I bought the Freeman hype too much, who did I think we are?

FWIW not actually sure OSU is really pressing at the moment which is where I think our edge comes in part. If OSU was pressing it’d be 50/50 IMO

OSU has also had a lame duck DC for months so if Knowles likes him that could change, or maybe already has. Did that flip things again?

I’d wait on judgement. Fastest time is 4.59 and one of the 247 guys said “This is the slowest track in America to run”. He likely runs in between the 4.4 camp time and this.

Even if that number is accurate - He's a junior in high school. Do you guys think CBs at the combine run the same time at 21 that they did at 16?

No but .1 difference is a better improvement than most I bet. People don't run 4.50's in highschool and then run 4.40 flat often.

So yeah a 4.7 is not good at all but sounds like he also ran a 4.59 and the fastest guy was 4.49 - is that right?

If so maybe it is a slow field then.

Fastest was 4.59, so fastest was a 4.6 and he was 4.7 to make it more straightforward. Hand timed 4.4 at OSU and 4.5 at ND. As long as he’s not a lot slower than the rest either everyone lies and is slower at this stage, the track/laser was slow or both.

I actually think it's quite common. Even from college to the pros. I can't find the article but I remember reading a few years back that most combine training organizations believe with proper training alone, they can take 0.1 second off all prospects 40 times. In fact, some have even more dramatic results, like John Ross.

So, if a kid has a blazing 40 time, that's likely the real deal. But, if a kid has a slow 40 time but looks fast on film, it's likely due to poor training and/or underdevelopment at such a young age.

I know there are success stories but no one talks about the aggregate. I can't prove this cause it's not tracked but I think a full .1 difference improvement is rare. You're talking like ~10 feet of separation over a few years time. I have experience in track and IDK if the average person knows how big of a difference .10 is.

I’ve read articles about the people who work with players to improve their 40 times, not necessarily making them actually faster, but just improving the timed 40, and it’s pretty crazy.
They say that if you take a kid who has never been coached to run a 40 and take his time, then give him a coach, they can improve his time over .10 by working on his start, his s stride, & his finish. So they aren’t actually making him football faster, but teaching him how to improve his 40 time just to improve his stock.
Then add that to an actual speed coach who does improve their speed…

I have friends who coasted through their undergraduate years and then paid for LSAT and GMAT prep courses to get into Yale and Harvard. It's said that such courses only take you so far. Yes, my friends got accepted, worked their asses off, networked, and have no apologies to make for their success. They understood and worked within the rules, even if some would consider it cheating.
