In the same breath, Penn State fans and media will say that PSU recruiting sucks because they spent all their money on the current roster while also saying the current roster doesn't have the weapons they need to succeed.
I’ve been a Vikings fan for 30 years and a ND fan for 20 so I’m well acquainted with bad QB play and all of the various copes that go into you denying what your lying eyes are telling you.
When you have the right guy at QB you just know. Suddenly everyone else on the roster looks better.
Not to say no one gets better or progresses but Allar is who he is by now in college and it’s been the same song and dance his whole tenure.

Taking technique and results completely out of it, if you just watch Allar in between each snap you can tell he is not a high level QB. Future NFL QBs don't look like him. He is a spaz. He visually expresses his frustration at teammates' mistakes. Blames everybody but himself when things go south.

He looks like a toddler about to have a meltdown because his ice cream is melting down his leg. Wake up Drew! You will realize its warm, not cold, because it's just your own pee running down your leg because you are about to choke away another game.

Got a little off topic there but my point is you can tell by looking at him between plays that he is not cut out to be an elite QB.

I’ll give Allar one thing, they totally fucked him hiring Andy Kotelnecki. You don’t gimmick and trick play you’re way to to a national championship.

Meanwhile they pay a kid high 6 figures at minimum to come play hockey.

Maybe he feels like he needs to do that with Drew Allar as his QB? Or did Kotelnecki always do this at his other stops?

Look at his QBR rating against no competition. He couldn’t even rack up decent numbers against bad teams. They could lose two more game and be gone. Indiana and the Ohio State. We should be able to count on him to screw the pooch for us. I do like that heavy white but rapper silver necklace he wears during the game.

It’s his thing. Which totally on board for when you’re the Kansaa OC. Catch people off guard, work with minimal talent. Same with Vandy for example. But when you step up to the big leagues, it ain’t it.

He was highly thought of having been on the Leipold tree at UB and KU all those years. They even dropped to 5-7 last year without him.

Maybe what works for places like that doesn't work in the Big Ten. Sometimes you find out the hard way.

I agree they messed up with the OC hire. But not for your reasoning. AK wants a mobile QB. Allar has some sneaky athleticism but not a true duel threat guy. The QB who transferred to Missouri would be a better fit

Kotelnecki owes Tyler Warren a case of beer or 50. Warren made him look like a genius last year. I can't even remember how many times I heard analysts say things like "Kotelnecki is so creative and finding ways to get Warren involved!"

But in reality it was just a unicorn doing unicorn things. Now you have a QB who has not developed at all because his offense consists of a bunch of eye candy pre and post snap followed by a one read throw.

Story time.

A close friend was at a party a few years ago with a few PSU players that were big names - like top NFL draft picks. They all said, at the time, that PSU should start Pribula over Allar because Pribula “is a dog” and Allar “won’t show up when the team needs it”. This was before he started a single game. Sometimes you just know when someone’s not built for the limelight.

This is funny because Pribula has looked definitively better than Allar this year. We'll definitely know more after this week when he goes up against Alabama

Bigger thing is that his offense is designed for dual threat QBs and Allar is not that.

Penn State is 16-4 with Kotelnecki as OC.

Did they screw up hiring him or is it just that James Franklin is a massive fraud who can't win a big game regardless of who his OC is?

They're typically 11-2 and third in the Big Ten on an annual basis. Kotelnecki might be the issue he's being made out to be. Franklin can't beat anybody worthwhile and Allar isn't that good.

I’m not suggesting Kotelnecki is the reason for their big game struggles. Under Yurcich as OC they yes, also went 20 - 4 (2x OSU, 2x Michigan) in the regular season his last two years and he got fired for it. If I’m Allar, he committed in part because of Yurcich. Instead of hiring someone to further develop him, they hired a gimmicky OC to try to trick their way to different results.

The results are the same and his development is probably worse off.

Their QB coach Danny O'Brien is in year two. Yrucich was QB coach in 2022-23 but he was also OC. O'Brien has been on that staff as an analyst and GA from 2021-23.

There are a lot of moving parts here for sure, there were worse hires to make than Kotelnecki at the time. Probably still are. I think it's probably time for them to move on from Franklin. It has a very stale feel to it at this point.

I think maybe a lot of people got it wrong on Allar. Seems like he blew up in 2021 as a senior in HS post Covid and in many ways looked the part but none of that has really manifested in any way. I think an NFL team is nuts using a first round pick on him.

Beau Pribula is absolutely better than Allar, but there was no universe where Penn State kept him over Allar. Way too much money and energy invested in Drew at this point.

It’s hard to project what any kid will become at 17.

The question I have is who on that staff decided to go with Allar and let Pribula walk?

Pribula’s got Mizzou at 5–0 with 1,200 passing yards, 9 TDs, and a QBR of 77.5. 120 yards and 3 TDs on the ground.
Allar has around 760 passing yards, 6 TDs, a QBR of 48.4, and just 60 rushing yards with no scores.

They picked the wrong horse.

No doubt. Which is why using absolute terms like "must get" and "Hands down offer" are nothing more than hyperbole in the end.

I checked Pribula's opponents. I don't know one way or the other, but I have to wonder how much better he fares against Oregon compared to Allar: Beau Pribula 2025 Stats per Game - NCAAF - ESPN

Maybe they did. I certainly have never felt like we were missing anything.

James Franklin hiring OCs and then picking the QB that does not fit what that OC wants to do on offense is a very funny, long running bit

Pribula has been better than I expected. I think better than any Missouri fan expected. Knew he could run so you could convince yourself okay yeah maybe some option stuff. But he’s throwing it down field to Coleman just like Cook did to Burden. Rinse and repeat. Drinwitz knows what he wants and he built an offense to do it yet again.
