Seems reasonable. You have to think the coaches also told him he was wanted and would have a shot at the starter position.I'm assuming Pyne and Buchner's experiences had something to do with it.
I would guess he will stay and get his degree and then reevaluate his options.
Generally speaking, most players are able to complete their coursework in 3 years due to all of the summer courses they are taking. Some majors may be more difficult than others. Angeli started spring semesteter 2022. I'm guessing he should be able to graduate a year from now.Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a guess when he will finish his degree? I wonder if he would finish after fall semester. Then it would make sense, if he doesn't feel he can beat out Kenny or CJ, and leave in the spring, with 2 years of eligibility to play.
Huge news.Being reported on ISD that he isn’t transferring, which isn’t a huge shock since the portal is about to close, but it seems he’s committed to — at minimum — spring ball and hopefully all of next season.
The big unknown is ..... was ND hitting the portal regardless OR were they hitting the portal only if they got one of the top 2 or 3 QB's in the portal. The coaching staff has seen him every day and they went into the Portal to get Leonard. I'm not entirely sure the Oregon State game changes anything other than the sample size the public has gotten to see of Angeli.
I think the Big Unknown is Angeli himself. He's a three star QB that had a pretty solid offer list as a recruit but played in a very run heavy offense in high school if I remember correctly. Up until last week we really only saw him in garbage time. Oregon State was a glimpse, and it was a pretty good one, but apart from that I don't know that I can say I expect him to start at TAMU in 8 months based on any of that. The big unknown is ..... was ND hitting the portal regardless OR were they hitting the portal only if they got one of the top 2 or 3 QB's in the portal.
If it was the latter, I don't think that confirms that the coaching staff thinks Angeli can't be the guy in the future. He's in essence a redshirt Freshman. Perfectly understandable that they might want another year of seasoning (for him as well as Minchey), especially if they can come out of the portal with a guy like Leonard.
Fall semester would be too soon to graduate, he's going to be a junior next year. Maybe Spring of 2025 he could graduate and transfer if he isn't leading to start in 2025 after spring ball.Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a guess when he will finish his degree? Those must be the 3 for 40 signees, rather than 4 for 40.Generally speaking, most players are able to complete their coursework in 3 years due to all of the summer courses they are taking. After looking at things again, I concede that my comment about "most" guys being able to graduate with 3 years of classes is probably overstated. Most guys can easily graduate after 3 1/2 years which is consistent with what you said.Fall semester would be too soon to graduate, he's going to be a junior next year. Maybe Spring of 2025 he could graduate and transfer if he isn't leading to start in 2025 after spring ball.
I don't know that he's shown enough - as a recruit or in college - for any other P5 program to offer him a starting job either at this point. Maybe some offensive disaster zone like Iowa but what's the point of going there?I think the Big Unknown is Angeli himself. Leonard is sort of a high risk guy though considering his durability. I think MF learned from the situation with TB/Pyne where he was caught unprepared, and is now overcompensating to protect the position in case of injury. I’m not sure it’s a direct statement on whether or not Angelli can do the job well.
44 pass attempts in his career. 19 against Oregon State, 11 against Tennessee State.I don't know that he's shown enough - as a recruit or in college - for any other P5 program to offer him a starting job either at this point. So yeah he should at least stay through spring, angle to back up Leonard, and if Carr or Minchey come up behind him between now and this time next year he'll at least have more experience and tape to hit the portal with.

Really hard to think the general public can know more of anything based off of this. Freeman and Gino have seen more of him than anyone at this point. Freeman, Denbrock and Gino will determine where this goes for TAMU.
My money is on Leonard being QB1.
QB1 headed into spring ball. If Leonard wants to play he better be elite. Angeli is my guy.
I think it's interesting that we've seen 120 minutes of Leonard while Freeman, Denbrock and Gino have all seen hours upon hours of reps we have not, yet somehow we have people determining who should start this week against Purdue in addition to long term QB planning.
Same shit, different season. If Rees isn't the idiot, it's Parker, now it's going to be Denbrock's turn soon enough. Keyboard Bill Walshs everywhere in sight and nobody is quitting their day jobs. Strange.
Correct. We're still losing to Marshall, in effect, in year 3. And this loss was worse because happiness = reality - expectations. We had high expectations for this team. So yeah, fans are going to complain about the ongoing disaster.I think it's interesting that we've seen 120 minutes of Leonard while Freeman, Denbrock and Gino have all seen hours upon hours of reps we have not, yet somehow we have people determining who should start this week against Purdue in addition to long term QB planning.

I agree with your point in principle. What we've seen of RL is a small sample size, but the trends were already in place at Duke last season. If he remains starter, he should improve but the same can be said with any college QB in a new system with new set of receivers. I'd say a switch is justified right now, but to your point, smarter football people (than me) will make that decision. Though if he continues to be inaccurate and unable to throw downfield, it may cost those smart people their jobs.I think it's interesting that we've seen 120 minutes of Leonard while Freeman, Denbrock and Gino have all seen hours upon hours of reps we have not, yet somehow we have people determining who should start this week against Purdue in addition to long term QB planning.

That wasn't my point. It doesn't matter who the OC is of this program. Everyone seems to know better who QB1 should be despite not being in the building and overseeing practice reps, etc. They've seen more of Angeli, Carr and Minchey than we have. All of them were in that building last year. I have a real hard time thinking they're just putting Leonard out there out of spite unless he's truly the best option. I have that we're having these discussions yet again, but in the end, they've gotta play a better option if they actually have one. They might not.Correct. The counter to that is the OC and coaching staff also trotted out Brandon Wimbush over Book after seeing both practice multiple times. Sometimes coaches overthink things. That wasn't my point. Was anyone expressing concerns about Leonard after last week? Not really. They won. Had they pulled out a 17-16 squeaker on Saturday, I'm guessing concerns get mentioned, but the overwhelming narrative was survival and 12-0 is still on.
